I like the slice the board down in the water. When its flat, it floats and makes it more difficult to get the fett on. I tend to hold it out front of me, and when im ready to mount. slice it into the water on its edge so it gets a little deeper. It allows you to get your front foot in. Some people hold the back binding instead of the center strap to make it easier to get that front foot in. Then grab the center to pull it tight.

When practicing water starts it is much easier to learn it by pointing the board a bit downwind before diving the kite. Without that simple move people get stuck on water starts and make impressive crashes like 'Superman' style ;)

when she flew off the board... that was me on the weekend, only I went a lot further. my instructor was screaming at me to depower but I accidentally pull the bar in. woops

I am new to this cool sport. I haven't totally mastered the water start yet (too many meduium sized waves) mabe it's the sick side of me but I love doing my Superman impressions in mid air. I'm still not sure which I prefer the most body dragging or being on the board.

Those hands are awfully wide. Its going to be prone to oversteer. Its safer and more productive to be closer to the center.
