I'm an Hispanic male and I am happy that we have this new holiday. It's important that we have a day for our country to celebrate an end to slavery. I also feel that it should include a great big thank you to all of the white people who saw the horrors of slavery and knowing that the black man could not do it for himself, gave up their comfort and their lives to see it end. I am grateful, as we should all be, for the determination they had to make this country free for all.

In Northern Louisiana, the slaves left and there was a food shortage and starvation with no one to harvest crops. They wanted to avoid starvation in Texas, so they payed them to keep working the same jobs to prevent mass starvation. They didn't recognize it, but as slaves, they were given all the essential skills of the day, to thrive. They were taught to manage crops, manage livestock, make cotton cloth and clothes, cook, blacksmithing, and carpentry skills to build houses and wagons. They were given training in all the technology and essential skills, of the day. They did lack skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, which is essential to run a business.
