What a breath of fresh air. A youtube video professionally done, self deprecating, full of essential information and funny too. You get my TH-cam Oscar this week!
I have the same 2.5. My first motor. My grandfather bought it in ‘89 and sat in the bilge of his boat for 25 years, using it most of the year. My first motor I ever tinkered with, and it still runs almost every day to get me to work and back.
They are great little motors, I have the 3.5 in that range and would never be without one. Something to keep in mind especially with internal tank motors is to always open the vent before opening the fuel tap. If there's pressure build up in the tank from being in the sun etc it can flood the engine by overwhelming the float valve and that will make starting much more difficult. Opening the fuel cap first will allow the carb to fill by gravity alone and starting will be much easier. I also leave the cap loose with the tank drained during storage to prevent the tank from being stretched due to pressure build up (as happens with plastic jerry cans) Cheers, and thanks for posting.
Great little engine and easy to work on it! After a breakdown and 10 years outside in a tarpaulin, I repaired it by changing and gapping the spark plug + complete cleaning of the carburetor Starts perfectly now and nice idle!!
THANKS I BOUGHT MY 12 FT JON BOAT ABOUT A MONTH AGO, IT WAS PRETTY RUFF IT'S A 200 MODEL, I HAVE DETAILED THIS BOAT EVERY INCH. I PAINTED IT GREEN, DID ALL THE TRIM IN BLACK ADDED POLE HOLDERS ADDED SOME CARPET, MOUNTED TWO SEATS, AND ADDED THREE ROPE HOOKS,, LOTS OF WORK, BUT IT LOOKS MUCH NICER NOW, I GOT NEW PLATES FOR THE TRAILER AND TAGS, ALMOST READY TO GO, I NEED TO TUNE THE 2.5 MOTOR UP, I HAVE THE 5-1 OIL AND GAS READY IN A GAS CAN ALREADY MIXED, JUST ABOUT READY TO GO FICHING IN A WEEK. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING.
I have a 1995 2.5 mariner (exact same but grey) hasn't been used in 20 years, was pulled out and started yesterday, only drawback is the tiller arm loosens on its own , it did it 20 years ago as well... loved the motor as a child , at half throttle pushed my 19 foot fiberglass boat 4.5 kms per house
You do a good job making videos. I have 10ft flat bottom old western red cedar rowboat. Im looking at a cared for 1999 or 2001ish Tohotsu 3.5 two stroke. I'm looking forward to not only rowing my boat and your videos help me get excited seeing small outboards travel around.
I picked up a brand new 1993 Johnson 3 hp outboard motor yesterday for $350 cash. It's never had gas in it. Someone received it as a gift & never used it. 30 years old, but still brand new! It has some features that I like over your Mercury model. The gas on/off knob is the same knob for the choke. It is located in the front, twist is gas shut off, pull knob out to choke it (no reaching around to the side). It has a neutral/forward lever. Thus, you can stop without having to turn your motor off all the time. Most of all, it has a twist throttle handle, that can be flipped over when going in reverse. I believe the same vintage Evinrude is the same motor (both made in Belgium). It's a smooth 2 cylinder, too. For the price I paid, I don't think anything on the market today compares. It even has two extra prop shear pins and two cotter pins under the hood cover, & instructions on how to start it if your pull cord breaks. Personally, I'd rather have a 2-stroke over the 4-stroke. I have 4 chainsaws. Mixing gas is no big deal, and the engines can be held in any position when it 's a 2-stroke. I look forward to adding it to my Old Town Discovery Sport 15 that I haven't used for a few years. I am very happy with my recent find!
We have a 14' flat bottom aluminum boat plain jane with a 25xd horsepower mercury . My dad bought boat in 1983 polar craft and motor in 1985 new. It'll keep up with wave runners on the lake . We have been tubing on it several times. Still have it and running today. It's been the best.
I have a 2 hp Eska ( not made anymore) and I do about the same shut down procedure too. Also I always mix Seafoam in my fuel so even if I leave fuel in my carb, it won't harm anything and always starts right up.
I had a2 hp suzuki 2stroke given to me, nearly identical to your motor. my buddy had it given to him! He never used it, sat in hi garage for a dozen years. I got it running immediately. Then it stalled immediately. It was missing a screw that secures to carb to intake. My buddy who gifted it to me said he use to selll them t sears in the 90's. I use chainsaw gas in mine. i really like ho light and compact it is. I run mine on a 18 foot canoe.
I have the 3.3hp model, which is pretty nearly identical to the 2.5, certainly as far as the startup, shutdown and storage procedures go. I've also got a 27lb thrust Minn-Kota electric which is great for sneaking around quietly on the backwaters.
THANKS, WAYNE I GOT I AM GETTING EVERYTHING NEXT WEEK AT THE STORE, WALMART OIL MEASURING CUP LIFE JACKETS ROPE FISHING STUFF, I AM JUST ABOUT READY BY THE END OF THE MONTH FOR MY FIRST FISHING TRIP IN MY JOH BOAT IT'S 12 FT WITH THE WOOD CARPET FLOOR I AM ALSO BUYING THR BOAT PAINT AND PAINTING THE HOLE INSIDE ALL GOOD THANKS.
I have a Suzuki 4 stroke 3.5hp and love those little outboards! Tohatsu made small outboards are great: I have 2stroke 7.5hp. I just don’t use it cuz I just don’t like 2 stroke smell..o, and I don’t have a boat for it neither lol
I have the same motor mercury 2.5 on my hard water tender westmarine 9.4, it’s all that I need for moving well, very comfy management and reliability. I have also a Yamaha 4hp 2 stroke that us very good, but honestly I use Mercury 2.5hp much more times because the weight. Cons: Vibration and no neutro shift.
Same motor but an 03. Not a fan of the throttle and reverse but hey it was free from a neighbor of mine who got it with his sportspal canoe with the flat transom, he said it didn't start... it started 3rd pull for me. Guess he only know electric start. It's a great little backup motor incase u get stranded... happened once at night to me and swore never again.
I have an Evinrude ( made by Outboard Marine, when they still existed) which looks exactly like your Mercury 2.5 hp except that it is 3.3 hp........also made by Tohatsu. Like yours, ours starts and runs beautifully, but lacks neutral and reverse. But, all in all, it is a terrific little motor! Thanks. Gary Nephew
I never fooled with anything less than 15 HP, but I gotta say- that thing does a hell of a job, all things considered. I'm quite impressed it's able to, I assume, dry out the transom with you sitting that far aft. I imagine it'd actually get over the hump if you were forward?
I have been contemplating playing with a longer tiller handle to see if I can get it truly on plane. These little motors don't make it easy to operate from farther away.
Hi Wayne, is there a locking pin on these engines to use when using a boat with a rudder to stop it from moving from side to side and affecting steering? If so where is it? I can’t see one in your video. Thanks.
I recently acquired a Mercury 3.6 hp 2 stroke little motor. Took the carburetor apart to clean it and discovered that there were a few issues that concerned me. The short version is that I'll need a new carburetor. Looked around on ok interweb and didn't find anything close to what I need. Any suggestions? 🤔
I had Tohatsu 2.5 and a 3.5 with F And N lasted for years still have the 2.5 and also a very old Suzuki 2hp which appears to be identical they are tough as old boots used abused for yacjt tenders... Modern 4 stroke 2 and 2.5hp are much heavier and much bigger to carry to tender the only lightweight competitor is Honda 2.3HP aircooled outboard..
My Merc 2.2 and Tohatsu are both identical 2 strokes. 360 tiller. 17 lbs and always start even after 25 yrs. Tried a 2 hp Honda but they are so expensive. Light weight is important to me.
The Honda is way louder and seems to vibrate a lot more which makes the whole hull resonate. I have a friend who has one and I'm glad it's his and not mine.
Man that’s a slick little engine! I can’t believe that little motor will scoot 8 mph… I see a trip to bass pro shops in the near future…😂 Was that on the V hull or the flat bottom?
I just bought a 14' v hull aluminum just like this and it came with a 25 up Johnson. It's huge and heavy and is a pain to start. Maybe I'll get a smaller outboard like this and be just fine.
Hi Wayne I'm Stephen of southern Ontario Canada I have a Johnson 3.5 hp use this at the back of my sailing boat if I get stuck without enough wind I use it in emergencies
I had Tohatsu 2.5 plus 3.5 with FN and Suzuki 2hp all were basically the same the utterly reliable and tough and very easy to service there us also a quick tweet to increase power of 2.2 or 2.3 in the carb throat is a large washer remove this and magically you now have a 3.5hp Outboard There are videos on TH-cam on this easy update..
Hello, I'm in the market for a small outboard for kokanee fishing. The most important thing for me is not top speed but the ability to troll all day at slow speed 1.2 mph to 1.4 mph. Would the 3.3 hp 2 stroke be good for slow trolling or is it carbed more for top end? I occasionally see them used for sale. Thanks
Thanks, Yes, they work well but have a limited life. I just sold my electric and batteries. I use an inflatable and didn't like having to haul 100 lbs of batteries with me. I'd rather just take 1 gallon of gas.
I couldn't have this particular motor due to the fact it hasn't got a twist grip throttle and the reverse procedure because the back end of my inflatable boat to the motor mount is quite far. Check out the Intex Excursion 5 inflatable boat and you'll see that issue for yourself.
The tank holds less than 1 US gallon and I have run it around our river for about an hour and not emptied it. I bring extra fuel every time just in case. It’s a small, and not fast motor so the fuel consumption is very low.
HOW MUCH OIL DO I PUT IN THE GAS TANK THANKS FOR YOUR INSTRUCTION I NEEDED TO KNOW HOW TO START IT. I JUST BOUGHT A 12 FT BOAT WITH THE MECR 2.5 HP 97 YEARS MOTOR, THANKS FOR THE INFO.
It doesn't use much at all and the internal tank is less than a gallon - but I have never really distance MPG checked this engine - but I plan to in the spring.
Is there modern four-stroke outboards 5-6hp with two cylinders? I once borrowed a 6hp Yamaha two-cylinder two-stroke outboard and I really like how little vibration and low noise it had. Now I'm looking for an four-stroke equal. Google/Bing do not want me to find these, or they do not exist?
Hello Wayne. Your aluminum boat what model and size? Great video. I am getting a Nissan 2 stroke this weekend and your video helped me understand and confirm my decision to purchase the outboard. Entertaining as well. Thanks
Hey! Nice videos! I have a merc 3.3hp. Basically same as 2.5 but a biggie bore/piston. How many turns do you do to vent your outboard? I saw your video about fixing that. Smart!
Hi. Last summer i dropped top tank fuel tank cap to the sea. It came out somehow. I tried to order from aliexpress but it is sold with fuel tank. I could not find the cap only.
HI Wayne, I am about to get my first boat a small 16ft Shetland 535 cabin fishing boat but don't have an Outboard yet been put off by people telling me I need a minimum 25HP? when I look at the prices I can't afford them around £1000 minimum? my question is can I use a 2.5 or 3.5 HP? I am not too keen on speed just want to go sea fishing for couple hours. Can you please give me any advise to help. Thanks
You might need something stronger than a 3.5 if you’ll be dealing with stronger currents or tides. Smaller motors might not have enough strength to move a 16 ft boat in conditions that aren’t a lake.
Im looking to get a new one and I been looking into tohatsu they have the 2.5 hp and the 3.5 just 9 lb heavier and price is about 200 to 300 more is it worth just to get the bigger 3.5hp or just save the money and get the 2.5 hp ? I want it to be able to push a 10 ft inflatable dingy
@@WayneTheBoatGuy haha true , but at the same time when you compare brands and prices for example the 3.5 hp tohatsu new is around 1200 and the 2.5 yamaha is around the same price , what would you recommend?
I have the same outboard and despite it just being serviced it is now an absolute pig to start. Now won’t start at all. I suspect it’s a problem with the kill cord. Have you had any problems with it or with spark plugs? I can’t even find them 🙈
The kill switch on mine is quite sensitive and often trips me up when trying to start it. It doesn't seem to hold the button out far enough no matter what. Try to not run it on older fuel that has been sitting around - especially if it's ethanol blended fuel.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Thats what I thought ! What hp would you recommend 3 adults 1 child not looking for speed just a relaxing and some fishing.Thks just subscribed
Carbs can be very tricky - when you say you've cleaned the carb, did you spray carb cleaner in it - or remove it and disassemble it completely? Even if you did the latter, sometimes the smallest thing can block the circuit for the fuel to flow. If it's getting spark and there's compression the only thing missing is fuel. If you know the carb is good, check for a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel. Good luck!
If you remove the carb you will see a restrictor plate that looks like a washer with a rectangular hole in it. Just pop it out with a screwdriver and now you have a 3.3 / 3.5 HP.
If you do that if be keen to see a video of it! I think mine has been de-restricted already but I'd be interested to see how yours looks incase I'm missing something!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy I have an Elgin. About as good as 2 cycle gets. Smooth air cooled 4 cycles would be ideal, especially with a battery charger for lights and CB.
I have a 2017 Mercury 2.5 hp four stroke on my 6ft dinghy and with just me in it, she runs up to 11 mph with a gas can, phone, wallet and a life vest as a seat and I got the boat for about $600 and the motor had 10 hours on it and so far i've put about another 50-60 hours on it, when its out of the water the dinghy lives on the bow of my parents boat and the motor lives in the dockbox when we're not there and when we are there, the motor will live in the cockpit but it lives on the transom of my dinghy.
My Dad has one that I've used, and the only thing I dislike, its that once it starts, the boat starts going! There's no Neutral, which means... there's no reverse! To go backwards, you need to spin the motor to face backwards, and when you reach your destination (such as a dock) you have to reach over the motor to turn it off. Don't turn it back to facing you, or it'll push you away from the dock! Grrrr!!!!
I did not check the compression. When I bought this motor the seller started it up for me and it was so clean and obviously used very rarely. But I will check it out.
I bought a Yamaha F2.5 for my inflatable it’s a up to dated motor and a motor under 4 hp doesn’t have reverse that’s the only thing I don’t like about small motors
While I appreciate the video showing the motor, running a 2 stroke out of fuel is not a good idea. The oil in the fuel is what lubes all the internal parts. You will have a momentary lean condition when running out of gas, thus also lessening the lubrication. Just a FYI.
I suspect you are not looking to tow a skier !!!
Maybe one of those mouse skiers!
NOT JUST FOR FISHING
.
HOW MUCH 2CYC OIL DO I PUT IN THE GAS TANK.
it's a 50:1 mix - you need one of the measuring bottles like I talk about in this video: th-cam.com/video/721nUqPoVv8/w-d-xo.html

Great little engine and easy to work on it!
After a breakdown and 10 years outside in a tarpaulin, I repaired it by changing and gapping the spark plug + complete cleaning of the carburetor

I couldn't have this particular motor due to the fact it hasn't got a twist grip throttle and the reverse procedure because the back end of my inflatable boat to the motor mount is quite far. Check out the Intex Excursion 5 inflatable boat and you'll see that issue for yourself.
Yeah these little ones have such different and crude controls. For anyone who has ever run a 5-15 hp outboard - these are strange!
Hi Wayne what is the fuel consumption like ..ho2 long the full tank last for 2.5 mercury..thanks
The tank holds less than 1 US gallon and I have run it around our river for about an hour and not emptied it. I bring extra fuel every time just in case. It’s a small, and not fast motor so the fuel consumption is very low.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy thanks a lot ..hope you share how to maintain..i have exactly the same model.
HOW MUCH OIL DO I PUT IN THE GAS TANK THANKS FOR YOUR INSTRUCTION I NEEDED TO KNOW HOW TO START IT. I JUST BOUGHT A 12 FT BOAT WITH THE MECR 2.5 HP 97 YEARS MOTOR, THANKS FOR THE INFO.
Here's a video that shows how to mix your 2 stroke oil - th-cam.com/video/721nUqPoVv8/w-d-xo.html
I have a four stroke one and I'm worn out trying to start it. I'm thinking the gas isn't a high enough. Do you keep the vent open while running?
Yes the vent needs to be open or it shuts down. I've been there done that!
I'm curious on how long or far you can go on a full tank of fuel? I guess I can carry a small container too.
It seems like with the newer 4 strokes 8 hp is where we finally get 2 cylinders.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Great news for these wanting 8 hp then! Perhaps it will reach the smaller/lighter ones too!
Hello Wayne. Your aluminum boat what model and size? Great video. I am getting a Nissan 2 stroke this weekend and your video helped me understand and confirm my decision to purchase the outboard. Entertaining as well. Thanks
It's an EldoCraft that seems to have been built in the 1970s.
Here's a video of when I first got this boat - th-cam.com/video/Z3ISf-x60kE/w-d-xo.html
Hey! Nice videos! I have a merc 3.3hp. Basically same as 2.5 but a biggie bore/piston. How many turns do you do to vent your outboard? I saw your video about fixing that. Smart!
I typically turn mine much more than I need to!
I getting the same one soon
Also I am a kid
Hi. Last summer i dropped top tank fuel tank cap to the sea. It came out somehow. I tried to order from aliexpress but it is sold with fuel tank. I could not find the cap only.
Dang
What is the neutral?
HI Wayne, I am about to get my first boat a small 16ft Shetland 535 cabin fishing boat but don't have an Outboard yet been put off by people telling me I need a minimum 25HP? when I look at the prices I can't afford them around £1000 minimum? my question is can I use a 2.5 or 3.5 HP? I am not too keen on speed just want to go sea fishing for couple hours. Can you please give me any advise to help. Thanks
You might need something stronger than a 3.5 if you’ll be dealing with stronger currents or tides. Smaller motors might not have enough strength to move a 16 ft boat in conditions that aren’t a lake.
just fyi that boat was designed for a 9.5/9.9 johnson/evinrude. if you do the math it can hold an 18 to 25. short shaft of course.
Yeah but I'm not in a hurry and and a larger motor was out of my budget at the time.
Well nobody ever wishes they had a smaller engine. The 2.5 can't really go faster than about 6 or 7 mph - I imagine the 3.5 can do better.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy haha true , but at the same time when you compare brands and prices for example the 3.5 hp tohatsu new is around 1200 and the 2.5 yamaha is around the same price , what would you recommend?
@@ianjosue97 I would go tohatsu. I know I'm late lol
I have a 2015 3.5 tohatsu
are you doing the service and mechanical tutorials? 🤔
There will be more videos with this engine in the future.
Would this motor pull say about 3 adults 1 child ?? maybe 10mph?
No it’s too low HP for that.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Thats what I thought !
What hp would you recommend 3 adults 1 child not looking for speed just a relaxing and some fishing.Thks just subscribed
Hey man I have a 96 mercury 4hp and it won’t start do you have any idea why this is? It’s getting spark and I cleaned the carb.
That sounds like something fun to play with - thanks!
If you do that if be keen to see a video of it! I think mine has been de-restricted already but I'd be interested to see how yours looks incase I'm missing something!
Shouldn't more water be coming out of that circulating tube
How fast are you going
I think this motor can only get up to 7 or 8 mph
Wayne, is the 2 stroke better than their 4 stroke?
I’ve never tried out their 4 stroke but I think they’re very similar in terms of weight and power.
Thanks Wayne, also watch other people's review about Mercury 2.5 4 stroke, only 3/5 st
2 stroke is a giant step backward. So is water cooling. Don't leave fuel in your motor. Pour it back when you're done for the day and run it dry.
Have you seen the small outboard I am running lately?
@@WayneTheBoatGuy I have an Elgin. About as good as 2 cycle gets. Smooth air cooled 4 cycles would be ideal, especially with a battery charger for lights and CB.
I was using this a couple months ago but I didn’t know that the top was for the gas
If it's a 2 stroke make sure you add oil to the gas if you're ever using it again!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy your video is very helpful thank you
Have a 1975 Suzuki it is a heap
I think those older small engines were made by Nissan marine for Mercury.
I had heard that Tohatsu also made them for Nissan. Sometimes it seems to be musical chairs for 'who makes what'.
I have honda 2.3 and when i try start it the pulling wire just kick and breaks fingers
Dang. The motor might have an issue. Try pulling the cord with the spark plug removed
I have a little 25hp 2008 4 stroke
That's a nice (not so little) motor!
We have a 1996 2.5
Mercs are their own breed of cat. Many fishing guides swear by them.
How much Wayne?
How much did it cost me? I think it was around $300 used.
The yhamha guy's 😂
My Dad has one that I've used, and the only thing I dislike, its that once it starts, the boat starts going! There's no Neutral, which means... there's no reverse! To go backwards, you need to spin the motor to face backwards, and when you reach your destination (such as a dock) you have to reach over the motor to turn it off. Don't turn it back to facing you, or it'll push you away from the dock! Grrrr!!!!
Quite quiet like (the engine).
What is the compression PSI of that motor? I have a NIssan 3.5hp (same motor).
Look it up
I wanted to know if he checked the compression on his motor.
I did not check the compression. When I bought this motor the seller started it up for me and it was so clean and obviously used very rarely. But I will check it out.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Thanks Wayne!
Ha I'm one crazy guy putting a 15hp on a 8ft Parker craft
That's a lot of engine for a really little boat!
Please vitesse ? Klmh.?
My 3.5 Nissan 2 stroke starts better than my 2021 Mercury 2.5 hp 4 stroke
lol - 2 strokes!
Nissan owns tohatsu Drrrr
I bought a Yamaha F2.5 for my inflatable it’s a up to dated motor and a motor under 4 hp doesn’t have reverse that’s the only thing I don’t like about small motors
agreed!
The reality is: a horsepower is equal to about 1.5 man power, So 1 horse is about 15 man power!
While I appreciate the video showing the motor, running a 2 stroke out of fuel is not a good idea. The oil in the fuel is what lubes all the internal parts. You will have a momentary lean condition when running out of gas, thus also lessening the lubrication. Just a FYI.
I had never really thought abut this before.
