People may not realize this, but if you do a google search you will find that Bela Lugosi was 6’1” and Karloff (Pratt) was only 5’11”. Lugosi was actually taller than Karloff but universal used the same camera and stage effects used in “The Green Mile”, to make Karloff look much taller.

G'day 👋 Thanks again for a wonderfully narrated (as always) story. Unless I've finally gone 'covid lockdown coo-coo' 😅 ..and it's right under my nose, I can't find the year this was written/first published.. in the description anyway. Is it there, and I am just missing it, or if not there, do you know when it was?

Why did Weird Tales ever stop publishing. The greatest horror writers of the century contributed to it and even those who didn't become household names wrote intense and memorable stories. The public appetite for horror seems to stay constant so to quote Public Enemy what sucker stole the soul ?

They died with film and tv. It was a slow death, but by the 80'samd 90's the big ones were almost gone. Stephen king mentioned them in his early autobiographies, as being published in playboy and maybe even amazing stories, and I vaguely have memories of Nova for scifi advertised in the early 90's.
The short story format itself is dead in the publishing world, only really living on in creepypasta.
Now, to be honest, if someone were a bit enterprising, right now would be a great time to start a self publishing magazine and take submissions...
It's not easy though. Back in 2000 I tried doing some random email thing with short stories via email and I got only 3 subscribers (mostly family) and only one friend to submit a story, but it was fun...
But maybe it's nearly time to take another stab at it.

I so much prefer the older stories. The gradual change in what issues and subjects affected the common gestalt of what society feared as a whole. Not to mention the mastery of vocabulary that conveys the creeping sense of maleficia.

Dracula's Guest is a wonderful piece. It's a shame Bram didn't include it in the final novel. Perhaps he thought it would detract from the later mystery at the castle when we meet the three vampiresses.

'Horror Babble & Rue Morgue,' is where it's at ! 'Crappy pasta' has the most awful narrarator. He owns the podcast, so he forces his want of fame by narrarating. He talks: slow-fast & loud- slow-fast-loud...etc.. He sounds like an annoying college student who constantly has to opine, just to hear himself talk. His volume control is non-existent. The volume of that voice goes up & down, then he speeds up when the usually lousy story reaches any increase in activity. Fast talking that gets louder and louder. Then it gets slower to only get faster and louder. The C.I.A. should use Crappy Pasta to torture Terrorists.
