  • I wrote this 3-part fugue over the festive break and has been trying to play it ever since. I found it fiddly to play even though I made it up.
I learned there are 3 voices (upper, mid and lower) in a fugue. I played together by fingerpicking. There is a basic little tune which repeats quite often in one or other of the voices, an answer which used a fifth away in another voice, a counter which harmonises, and free parts. These elements are combined in a pattern to create the fugue. Music by numbers to some degree but with latitude in the free parts.
All a bit much for me but doing it in an open tuning helped me keep my bearings. Playing softly on my little parlour guitar made the stretches a bit easier for my old hands. Let me know what you think.
The photo looks a bit like a canyon but it is actually just a slo mo closeup of a mossy log I found in the forest today. Nice sunny day with birds singing.

Hello Phil, a wonderful piece of music you wrote. A big like from me. It is very calming and somewhat mysterious to my ears.

Hello Phil . . . . Very nice piece Mate. 👍🏻 Although I have heard of 'fugue' , I am not familiar with its (musical) true meaning . . . . but I do love alternate tunings as you know, so this piece appeals. I appreciate (always) what you share with us. Big like from me Mate. 😊 👍🏻 🎼 📽 🎧 🎸 🔊✌

@@johnnyl1957 Hi Johnny, thanks for your encouragement. I listened to it again and noticed that I drifted from 5 beats in the bar to 6, when I had intended to stick with 6 all the way through. Weirdly it just about hangs together. I checked with my wife, who’s classically trained, and she says it’s fine and variations in time signature are found in many classical pieces, so I’m going to pretend this is what I intended. It happened as I got absorbed in playing it through many times. An accident which adds a bit of flow and interest to what is otherwise quite a mathematical process.

Well Phil . . . . I listened again (a few times) to the piece, and as you say 'it just about hangs together' . . . or for me 'it flows along'. As I listen again, the piece is really quite nice Mate. Big like again Phil. 👍🏻
