Here is my project for building an octoban set. It is playable right now but I need to build the 5 remaining drums. If you immediately want to watch the sound test, Go to 9:09
Since I’m getting a common question, here’s the answer: 6’ diameter pipe won’t fit to the 6’ drum rim. Chain hardware stores, like Home Depot and Lowe’s, don’t carry diameter between 4’ to 6’ so I recommend going to the local pipe store. I also recommend buying/ordering drum rims first so you can take it to the pipe store just to see it fits before buying a pipe.
These are great. I tried this a long time ago and you exposed all of my mistakes. Thank you! The octobans sound great and would be great for marching band or a drum set addition.
I am quite late but I have to ask. I know very little about drum hardware. What exactly did use for the hardware? I know Remo heads and PVC pipes for the main drum, but what for (I think)the hoop and that stuff? I am sorry for my terribly vague question. Thank you!
Just for knowing my Octoban Bros. there is 6" OD (Exact!) ALUMINUM tube available from Airflow Systems in Tukwila WA...$12 and change a foot...(I believe they ship too)...way better than 5-1/2 OD PVC and richer sound than acrylic ( I have made both sets) Remo heads/rims fit snugly and sound awesome... I dropped one from 4Ft. off my kitchen counter by accident with zero damage...they are bullet proof....my acrylic one would have shattered...use same procedure as in this dudes video...just use better material! If I could post a photo of them I would. I applaud this guy for his ingenuity but if you're gonna spend all that money on rims and heads....spend a few extra penny's on Aluminum tubes, you won't be sorry!
*update* I just got the other 5 done. Now it's ready. Just to let you know that "Foxy Phone Guy" is almost done. Just few more clips and music editing. If you worry about the dog, Penny, she don't mind the tool working. She just didn't like the sound when my dad was changing the smoke detectors battery.
Thank you for sharing, it is good to see how you made them and they certainly do perform well (9:09) Might I ask you though, why you did not consider using wood such as wide bamboo or making somehow a curved wood similar to that if the "toms" on a drum kit. I imagine because it is more expensive/harder to find the wooden pieces. Thoughts?
I was going to work on that but I got tied up with other project such as "Foxy Phone Guy" animation and FNAF original song that year. After that, I lost interest on that project.
Hi. What size pvc pipe did you use because a 6" pipe is to big for a 6" hoop. I bought a 6" piece of pvc to do the same thing but found out a 6" hoop doesn't fit.
I’ve looked all over for the right sized PVC diameter, where did you find your PVC pipe at? Assuming it is 5.5” diameter PVC for it to fit the 6” drum rim
IndieTimber Studio gotcha. Appreciate it. I’ve checked around local shops here and nothing. So there was no where online you found the custom sized diameter PVC? It was just a local shop for you
where could we find the measuruments you took? and all the material needed? any suggestions on where to get them? Tbh, I would prefer to use the stand made for this, rather than a piece of wood, but other than that, awesome!
I would go for less than 6" and more than 5." Chain hardware store don't carry these. I would recommend getting a drum rim first just to see which it will fit.
IndieTimber Studio i work at a music store, i have access to the heads so i grabbed a 6” remo pinstripe. Quickly figured out yesterday that lowes and home depot only have 6” OD (which tried and was too big) My problem now is i don’t know a place i could find a pipe for the sizes you’re saying. Ive looked online to but to no avail. Any suggestions?
I ordered the parts (including rims lugs, tension rods, and head) for about $100-200 dollars just for first four drums. I don't remember the cost of the PVC pipe. I also just finished the other five, which it's now complete.
sounds amazing but you work really bad and with a lot of imprecision, specially for make the holes for the lugs, the pipe is less than 6 inches, all the screws go really bad from the hoop to the lugs..., this gonna give you a lot of problems for tunning and stay tunned long time...., you need to put some peace beetween the lug and the shell for repair the problem...., if you do that and you paint they with quality you make a really nice octobans, the mount are really cheap and bad, better one tom bracket on everyone...., but sounds really good....

Ok, so you said 6" doesn't fit.... but what size did you actually end up using????
These are great. I tried this a long time ago and you exposed all of my mistakes. Thank you! The octobans sound great and would be great for marching band or a drum set addition.
Cool build and they sound pretty cool. You can still hear that pipey sound though.
The sound test sounds like “Lean on Me”
5" schedule 20 pipe is hard to find. Most local plumbing supply houses in my area don't have it either.
Great job Sir 👍👍👍

Great job, man. I'll build my own based on your experience
That's nice. Feel free to do something else that is better than my take.

I was going to ask what diameter pipe was used.... hmm...
I don't see a website for that place? Got the one you used to order the aluminum?

Imagine "the pipe guy" playing his pipe master pieces on an instrument made out of bamboo! (Difference in tone)
What type of bearing edges did you use?

I'm sad that you didn't gave them all the same color. I mean, it's a set right?

Great work. Do they seem to last long?
Still standing, so far but I still have to be careful while traveling.
@@IndieTimberStudio Thank you so much.

Do you have to show all 4 if them?
When you were playing those octobans around @06:51 it sounded like the melody to "Lean on Me" 😅🤜🤛
