Oi Wazza :) There's nothing more special than watching someone so incredibly talented and knowledgable, yet so incredibly humble at the same time............what a lovely and interesting Man is Barry. I was particularly moved when he was talking about Lynyrd Skynyrd.........hope I spelt that correctly........as it was clearly evident how moved he was personally by such a tragedy . A most enjoyable hour of my Day was spent. Cheers as always :) Dave Dwyer...........off to by a 500 series rack right now :)
Hi +Dave Dwyer Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes agreed Barry is a wonderful guy and knows his stuff! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi +SINOPTIK You're welcome! Barry teaches a course in Acoustics so he seemed like the perfect person to ask! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
One of the great things about your videos is what the person you interview has to show. I'm fascinated by lots of accounts, and then my jaw hits the floor when you're speaking with the guy who worked on "Show And Tell" by Al Wilson. One of my all time favorites! I'm a big 70s guy - I also noted "Sara Smile". Thanks again, Warren! (I won't call you Wazza :-)
Hi +TheAudioBooth Aw shucks! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes Barry is a very humble and extremely talented guy! I'm a huge fan of his and he has been extremely helpful to me and my career! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Wow. I have to say my eyes lit up when he mentioned Steve Cropper - he's a hero of mine. Great interview as always, and beautiful studio! Good points made on the 500 series as well. Thanks Warren and thanks Barry!
+Produce Like A Pro On the subject of 500 series, it would be nice to see you review some of the Lindell Audio stuff. They have really affordable racks and modules, including a transformer-coupled mic pre with 2 bands of passive EQ for about 300$. Pretty crazy. I think that would be a great review for your audience - myself included - struggling to find good quality products at a price we can afford. Anyway, thanks a lot!
Hi +Diego Oliveira Agreed! Through reviewing gear for many years now Barry has been able to pick and choose the best gear out there! He's an incredible resource for me and I'm so glad to be able to ini review him for the channel! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Agreed!! As a teenager I lusted after everything in music. Speakers and amps for play back would now be boat anchors. But they sounded a lot better. Still hear songs mixed for vinyl changed to CD or MP3. On vinyl I could do the Downbeat needle drop test......But in the "New" formats I do not ID the song until the lyrics. Many thanks to both of you!
Great Interview Warren and Barry. I'm a old musician from the 1950-60"s who remember recording and mixing out tracks on 15" reel to reel. I saw the handwriting on the wall in the seventies and moved to computers and have been doing so every since. keep the information coming.
another huge legend! he looks to know a lot of electronic engineer and sound waves propagation. its amazing how all the bests look very friendly and modest even after many success
Thank you for sharing Barry !!! Street Survivor's is such a great album, the songs, the sound, the feel, that smell,,, lol. An awesome capture of Skynyrd... They were not a small band, lol,,, Warren, when do you sleep man,,, lol,,, THanks again for all you do,,, I feel so privileged.,, I look forward to these interviews like I did every Saturday night to listen to The King Biscuit Flower Hour ,,, Love that I was born in '62 !!! cya' soon :D
Hi +The Rocker Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes Barry Rules! Humble, talented and a great guy!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
What is truly interesting is the connection between art and science. Both Barry and Tom Dowd worked on projects that had a great impact on our cultural and technical move forward, as it were: Barry working for NASA and Tom working on the Manhattan Project. The ability to understand the science behind how something works, such as the physics of sound, is just as important as the art and craft of recording. Great interview.
Hi +George Storey Agreed! The NASA connection is huge! That was such an important part of my childhood, he just casually mentioned it when I asked about the clock! So I insisted we talk about it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
As always great vid Warren! I have always been one of those guys who would read the liner notes of my albums to see who played on who's records. That was the best thing about vinyl you had something to read while listening to the music. I now pay attention to who produces, and engineers them as well. These kinds of videos are a great glimpse into that world, even if most of the tech talk goes over my head. Thanks, and keep it up!!
Hi +Mark Kinne Wow!! That sounds exactly like me! I scanned those vinyl album covers for hours and hours listening to every detail! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi +Anders Isberg Fantastic! That's exactly what I wanted to be able to show!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren you just keep upping it man! This is the best content out here these days. I love the Pensado stuff but they seem to be losing their way with the time restrictions, advertising blah blah. Which I get but its suffering (to me) in just what this stuff is all about. I love how some of your stuff goes short and some longer and the banter is my favorite. Not knocking anything just want to say I love what you're bringing and I hope it continues man.
Hi +Nik Drown Wow! That's so kind of you! It makes it all worth while to get these compliments! While they are people like you out there digging it and responding so well I will keep on doing it!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
had a bbe in the rack for a long time, there is a slate vid of the the blackbird pack, John McBride running it on snare. Really does something cool to snare drums. This interview is awesome, Barry rocks
Hi +Chris Dover Agreed! Barry RULES! I have to get a BBE and try it myself!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I wish his endorsement here would have helped sell some...Bbe probably still has a few hundred from the one and only run on a pallet down in Fullerton.
Hi +Paul Gioia Great! That's exactly what I like to hear! Very kind of you! Barry is a very humble but true expert in his field who teaches Studio Acoustics and has reviewed products for many years now, an amazing resource of knowledge!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Catching up watching as many of your videos as I can. Kind of a bit random in the order I watch them, chronologically speaking. But damn this is just superb stuff man! Just fantastic, draws you in, keeps you glued, great content, great info! Great entertainment! You are one hell of an interviewer!
Your videos are truly amazing. Please check out Studio 4 with Will Yip in Conshohoken Pennsylvania! Would love to see it. Keep inspiring and teaching others Warren!
Thank you Warren for another great video.Thank you for doing this.I have a maybe dumb question but here it goes .In these home studios do they condition their power at all or just learn to deal with the 60 cycle hum?
Hi +Mike Gibbons Great question! I would imagine it's completely on a case by case basis, if there's an issue that needs to be fixed. But not every room I've ever had has had grounding issues for instance. Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Another great Video! Would love to hear more about doing corrections to the monitors to make up for an imperfect room. I imagine that most people have rooms that are acoustically bad so it would be nice to know other ways to work around the problem other than trying to put in diffusers and bass traps.
Hi +Steven Butler Definitely! I'm doing a more in depth video that I will put up on the Academy site once we launch, plus I'm sure we will talk about that stuff more and more! Proper acoustics are a big subject! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi warren, (wasa) hope your doing Marvoulously well ? Great video lovely guy great home Studio to, would it be possible in future vid of studios to get to here the sound from the speakers in there rooms ? Cheers great job
Hi +Steve Henderson Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes great guy and great studio! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi +TimeMarchesOnBand It's amazing what Barry has done in his house, it's a modest set up but sounds great! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hey Warren , it would be great if you could do a detailed video in the future about the 500 series .. How to buy , set up etc... For those of us who are looking to take the step away from just using plugins but still on a budget.. Thanks a lot for all your work and advice
Hello Warren, I do apologize for being long winded, haha. Ever since we've been summing out of the box it has encouraged us to move further away from "in the box" processing. Thanks to your tour of Sunset Sound we discovered some great reverbs, delays and compressors that we have added to our setup. Your patchbay overview video allowed us to figure out a better way to harness our outboard gear and use them more as inserts rather than feeding into them, post DAW fader. The control over mixing has improved 3 fold. It seems the less processing the DAW does the better. The mixes we do are sounding better, more organic, punchier and we are using less compression overall. We have noticed there is less of a need to make the mix "louder". Question is: Do you see the mixing world taking a turn away from the "loudness wars" anytime soon? P.S. your passion for recording and gear is infectious. Thank you, Chris Hovsepian
Hi +Next Radio Agency thanks for the question Chris, yes I do! There's many bands who don;t subscribe to the louder is better theory. However they are the more independent sounding bands as opposed to the major label acts, we shall see how those fair and whether they start thinking that way, my guess is they will! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
It would be really neat to play the systems so we can hear the differences in the listening positions and away from. Not sure what you would play as to not get video taken down but I digress. Enjoy your videos! Good interview.
A delight as always! BTW, don't know how you pick your victims, but if you could interview Rich Chycki and show his setup it would be a dream come true.
He's born in Toronto and I believe his home studio (Street of Dreams) is based there, but I'm not sure. Right now I think he's finishing Dream Theater's new album in NY's Germano studios.
Hi +Theophan Konstantinov Great! Toronto is a wonderful town! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I have been subscribed to the youtube and email for along time now but never downloaded the samples or other things. I want to now but cant seem to find where to get them?
Hi +Jon Burrell I;m sorry to hear that! If you are on the email list you should have it. Can you email me at warren@producelikeapro.com? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Barry, Thank you for your insights into your studio setup. I have a similar room and would like to purchase a table like the one you have your monitors placed on. Could you please tell me who makes that piece of furniture as I have searched for one to no avail.. Thanks again! PS Steve Gaines was an immense talent, got to see them a year before the crash.
Thank you Warren for your fantastic channel, I should have addressed this question to you if you have a chance to forward this inquiry to Barry id appreciate it very much. Thanks again!
That was such an apt remark, about playing like your life depended on it. I'm missing that a lot of times when I listen to some band. It sounds good, the musicians are talented, but the life is missing. I'm just thinking.. What would one do, as an engineer, to try and inspire the musicians to conjure up said 'life'?
Another top notch guy with a Presonus Faderport... I've been thinking of getting one myself and would like to hear what these world class engineers/producers think of them.
Hi Warren! - Brad Donohoo here again. . Alright - to ask my question I have to explain a little bit. When I mix I tend to get very OCD with my organization . . - so I bus a lot on nearly everything in sub-divisions usually something kind of like the following. Guitar1 Recording / l \ GuitarLeftPan - GuitarRightPan - GuitarParComp \ l / Guitar Bus / Submix (then I have a submix for every other inst, overheads, and kicks/snares) | Final Gutar Submix ( beside the Master - I do this one if I want my lead and rhythm mixed together) l Pre-Master (Submix) l Master Do you see this being problematic in any way? Just wondering if I'm doing something completely wrong - or if this is right or if it's something I'm doing that's original at all???? - As always - thanks for the advice and awesome vids - - Brad Donohoo -
Hi +STOOPID KRAZY Interesting! Are you only tracking one guitar then making it 'feel' stereo? I would definitely track it twice and pan left and right! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Yeah - in this case - but this was morely just an example of how I'm routing. - Is there any real problems that you know of with routing "Inst 1" with Parallel Comp. on a seperate track - then running that to a buss and then to a submix ??? It seems to work great but I wasn't sure if I could be losing something by doing it this way. Thanks again. - Brad Donohoo -
Hey Waz... (you knew I would do this didn't you?) I was wondering as my mom worked for NASA in the early 70's if by any chance Barry might remember Annie Weeks. I ask as I got my first and second original Ovations directly from George Kaman who originally worked for NASA. (Mom also got to meet and know Glen Campell, and Fred Tackett as well from her articles for NASA Activities and her interviews of different engineers all working for the Space Agency during the end period of Apollo/Soyuz and beginning stages of Space Shuttle.) Just curious no worries. One thing I would like to suggest/ask about for future interviews? Since some of us are more musician then engineer, is there anyway you can arrange for us to actually "Hear" Examples of the different compressors and summing gear when you are going through them? The technical specs are all good of course but I would like to have an audio example of the different dynamics to help my learning curve. See I don't have a good "Room" acoustically so must rely on what the meters are saying, and of course burn lots of CD's to go and play other places to improve what the low rent speakers and bad room are doing when I'm mixing. You did that a bit with the acoustic treatment examples of the room, but I would like to be able to hear how such and such compressor colors the vocals, or how a specific exciter affects the tone or sound of an instrument. Like the "Re-Amp" you two were talking about. It would have been nice to hear how a combination of a Marshall, and Fender sounded through that specific device. Just a polite request if it's possible to do. Thanks sir and as always... HAVE A BODACIOUS DAY! :-p Marty
Hi +Martin Weeks Haha yes Wozza is what my English friends call me! I believe Barry said he worked them in the late 60's only. Definitely checking your mixes in other environments is a great idea! There's definitely a lot of additional videos we can spin off of just this one! Will take all of your ideas into account, I appreciate the positive feedback! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi +brian gogal Great! Thanks for reminding me, memory isn't always at it's sharpest! haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
My middle was a bit muddy on some of my mixes, so I figured better make a better room than the old apartment which had lead in the walls and on the paint and pipes
Countless dollars in precious gear and he’s got a stereo set of BBEs. I love it. I’m a big advocate of "price doesn’t matter if the sound is right". Great watch mates!
And here I am, English not being my native language, my ADD kicking in & searching every word in that screen behind while continuously pausing the video
Really enjoyed this interview with reviewer & gear aficionado Barry Rudolph. He says the following about the Sunset Sound S1P Tutti Mic Pre Amp at 21:16. “They sound really good. I think of it like this: they have an extra bottom and top octave, is one way to look at it. When you listen to them they’re more open on the top and more low end comes in them.” However the Sound on Sound review of November 2014 tells something different: “I’d still describe the sound as fairly well balanced, yet there’s a definite focus placed on the mid-range frequencies. There are preamps on the market with a more solid low end and a more open-sounding air band […] I don’t view this slightly ‘boxy’ character of the Tutti preamp as a reason for criticism at all; it’s just useful to be aware of this character, as it may or may not be helpful and desirable, depending on the situation.” Warren, what is your opinion regarding the tonal quality of this Pre Amp; Is it more suited for midrange rock or quieter 70s singer/songwriter material?
Hi +TBlizz Thanks for the great comment! I use the Sunset Pres all of the time, a review like that concerns me because when guys like Joe Chiccarelli use them every day to make huge sounding records and many of us use the consoles every day to make huge sounding records you have to wonder! All I can say is I love the way they sound! plus Barry is a review himself and he can choose any gear he wants! So personally I trust his and Joe Chiccarelli! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro I agree, Joe Chiccarelli is one of the best engineers around and his opinion carries great weight with me. I checked out the Electrodyne 511 EQ because he has two of them in his 500-rack. Enter SOS reviewer Hannes Bieger, producer en engineer of electronic dance music. Works from a beautiful studio in Berlin with great analog outboard gear (including a Retro Sta-level) and a few Electrodyne 511 EQ’s…If you’re a true Brit I suggest you watch the video on TH-cam by Telekom Electronic Beats on him, paratroop into enemy territory and get some answers! ;-) Happy New Year!
That was hilarious when Barry was talking about Lennard Skinard and getting a credit or not. By his description of mostly sitting around and making sure they played well he should have gotten a full Producers credit, and not a special engineers credit. Ha Ha.
Wazza: I'd like to actually try one of those Bazza: You're welcome to take this some time and give it a whirl, it's a big unit... Wazza: It's definitely a big unit... Funniest episode so far.
Hi Wassa LOL. I empathize with you completely. As you know, my name is jak leyton. Well actually when typing the form for youtube I left out the "C" in my first name. Its actually Jack Leyton. But if you say Jack-Leyton fast it sounds a lot worse than Wassa. Perhaps this will help, JACK-U-LEYTON, JACK-U-LEYTON. Kids can be cruel as you can imagine....LOL.
Hi +Jak Leyton It took me a few times to figure that one out! I had all the same things growing up! Kids can be very cruel! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Engineers are some of the most humble people. Great video Warren!
Hi +Skye Henry-Hernandez Aw shucks!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

It would be really neat to play the systems so we can hear the differences in the listening positions and away from. Not sure what you would play as to not get video taken down but I digress. Enjoy your videos! Good interview.
That's a fantastic observation Leroy!
Fantastic review!
Hi +princetonaudio.com Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, I would just like to know if You are going to make video about recording and mixing some brass/wind section?
By the way, great interview!
Hi +xanovich Fantastic question! Yes that's wonderful idea! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great video Warren! Speaking of templates, could you please do a video breaking down your template?
Hi +Arturo Lopez Thanks for the great question! Yes I will get more in depth in future! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great interview!
A delight as always! BTW, don't know how you pick your victims, but if you could interview Rich Chycki and show his setup it would be a dream come true.
Hi +Theophan Konstantinov Haha my victims!! Is he based in Canada? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Michael Beinhorn stated on GS Korn Untouchables was mixed in DSD, quote, "edged out analog".
Great program!
Hi +tekis0 Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Barry,
Thank you for your insights into your studio setup.
Hi +Dean Kobayashi Yes he really knows what he's doing!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
every video I'm left with at least 1 mixing idea in my notebook, thanks!
Hi +Michel Gregoire (Sonica) That's great to hear!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Sarah's smile great song
this might be your best!
Hi +Eric DeWolf thanks very much! Yes Barry rules! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Brilliant! Haha - love the clock.
Hi +Ryan Leyva (Nails) Agreed!! Love the clock! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren! - Brad Donohoo here again. . Alright - to ask my question I have to explain a little bit. When I mix I tend to get very OCD with my organization . . - so I bus a lot on nearly everything in sub-divisions usually something kind of like the following.
Guitar1 Recording
/ l \
GuitarLeftPan - GuitarRightPan - GuitarParComp
\ l /
Guitar Bus / Submix (then I have a submix for every other inst, overheads, and kicks/snares)
|
Final Gutar Submix ( beside the Master - I do this one if I want my lead and rhythm mixed together)
l
Pre-Master (Submix)
l
Master
Do you see this being problematic in any way? Just wondering if I'm doing something completely wrong - or if this is right or if it's something I'm doing that's original at all????
- As always - thanks for the advice and awesome vids -
- Brad Donohoo -
Hi +STOOPID KRAZY Interesting!
- Brad Donohoo -
Hi +STOOPID KRAZY That sounds like it should work fine! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hey Waz... (you knew I would do this didn't you?)
I was wondering as my mom worked for NASA in the early 70's if by any chance Barry might remember Annie Weeks.
Marty
Hi +Martin Weeks Haha yes Wozza is what my English friends call me! I believe Barry said he worked them in the late 60's only. Definitely checking your mixes in other environments is a great idea! There's definitely a lot of additional videos we can spin off of just this one! Will take all of your ideas into account, I appreciate the positive feedback! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Bazza is a cool guy and I learned heaps
Hi Andrew, yes, Barry rules!
Just gave you and Barry a plug on my Podcast The VO Radio Show, it'll go up in a few hours. Love the studio tours and gear chat.
Thanks ever so much Andrew!!
Wow! barry is my teacher in Musicians institute :D hahaha awesome!
Hi +Bernard Jonathan Haha exactly! Barry rules!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Leagues above us mere mortals, smiling
Warren, the recording studio your referring to with bob clearmountain in nyc was called "power station" now it is renamed Avatar. Hope this helps.
I agree 100% Daniel!
Great video
Thanks Greg! Yes, Barry is amazing!
And here I am, English not being my native language, my ADD kicking in & searching every word in that screen behind while continuously pausing the video
Hi +Sad Puppy I hope you were able to follow ok? What's your native language? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
All good mister ! I'm from Greece ! Cheers !
I love Greece! I was there in Oct, beautiful country!
When you listen to them they’re more open on the top and more low end comes in them.”
However the Sound on Sound review of November 2014 tells something different:
“I’d still describe the sound as fairly well balanced, yet there’s a definite focus placed on the mid-range frequencies. There are preamps on the market with a more solid low end and a more open-sounding air band […] I don’t view this slightly ‘boxy’ character of the Tutti preamp as a reason for criticism at all; it’s just useful to be aware of this character, as it may or may not be helpful and desirable, depending on the situation.”
Warren, what is your opinion regarding the tonal quality of this Pre Amp; Is it more suited for midrange rock or quieter 70s singer/songwriter material?
Works from a beautiful studio in Berlin with great analog outboard gear (including a Retro Sta-level) and a few Electrodyne 511 EQ’s…If you’re a true Brit I suggest you watch the video on TH-cam by Telekom Electronic Beats on him, paratroop into enemy territory and get some answers! ;-)
Happy New Year!
100% agreed! Joe is the man and Electrodyne make amazing equipment!
I don't know barry but he might be a good person.. and he has a good setup over there !
Hi +Juan Carlos Samaniego Yes Barry is a great guy! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thats my ultimate goal!!! A #1 record but nobody knows me. Lucky 😂
Hi Warren excellent videos as always. I just signed up on your web page and downloaded some tracks I’d love to get your feedback on. If possible
That wasn't a Chord DSD? Huh. I'll have to look that up
That was hilarious when Barry was talking about Lennard Skinard and getting a credit or not. By his description of mostly sitting around and making sure they played well he should have gotten a full Producers credit, and not a special engineers credit. Ha Ha.
Hi +Jak Leyton Haha yes he's a humble man! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Wazza: I'd like to actually try one of those
Bazza: You're welcome to take this some time and give it a whirl, it's a big unit...
Wazza: It's definitely a big unit...
Funniest episode so far.
Hi +kye903 Haha I try some comedy sometimes!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Barry best control surface for Presonus studio one 3.5 and logic 5 on P.C. Uad satellite 2 Oct thunderbolt and Quantum is my base on P.C.
Damn I'm 10 minutes into watching this video and have to go and teach a guitar student.
Hi +LAstudio8 Have fun with student! Glad to see you teach and give back! Excellent stuff! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
