Never heard of Clay but this has been my favorite episode yet. You guys seem very similar and in sync. Great stuff and always inspiring and helpful. And I always have research to do after watching!
From a Jeff Porcaro interview, he was asked to play on the song 'Mother" as no one else could grease the drums through the vocal phrasing, which is in an odd time. Another note, Jeff spoke of 'Sound City studio' just about all you had to do was set your drums up and you got a great sound. All of these 'use and do what you know' in so many venues are so magical in the sonic vibe ie quality. Thank You both for this. Smile.
Fantastic video! It is awesome to go back in time and get an inside into one of the most iconic studio's of that time. What is really amazing to hear is that Clay mentions a Quantum Audio Labs console being used. I think that was a QA-3000 of which we believe only 4 were ever made. One that was at the Producers Workshop with Bob Ezrin, another one that was in Studio 55 with Richard Perry, 1 that was in Nashville with Ray Stephens and 1 custom build for Wayne Jernigan at Reflection studio in Charlotte NC. Many amazing records were made on those consoles. Bob Ezrin, mixed The Wall, Rumours, worked on Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho, Alice Cooper, Chicago. Richard Perry recorded and mixed Destiny of the Jacksons 5, Stevie Nicks, Toto by Toto, Neil Diamond, Pointers Sisters, and many more. Then over here in NC, Don Dixon and Mitch Easter worked on tons of records on the Quantum at Reflection. A friend of mine had an old analogue studio that was unused for a long time and among the gear was the old 1976, 30 channel, 24 bus, quad Quantum QA-3000 that was custom build for the Reflection studios in NC. We have been restoring it now for almost 2 years and are now starting to use it on sessions. It is lovely to see such an incredible sounding console being brought back to life. Thanks for your lovely video!
Amazing interview. So relaxed. Best part is seeing someone who loves the old gear and most importantly is preserving it be using it. 1st class all the way.
Another great interview. You have done so many awesome studio/gear tours. I would like to see a video that is all about the gear or techniques you have purchased or employed as specifically influenced by you studio tours. You seem to enjoy and learn as much as we do!
What a great Video .. N Clay seems to be such a great, Knowledgeable, laid- back and personable guy .. Love getting the history lesson during vids like this.. talking the gear other studios, recording techniques . Just the sharing of knowledge in a non .. competitive way... again.. great video.. thoroughly enjoyed it !! thanks !!!
Amazing studio! Fantastic stories too! When you got to the Wurly in the storage room it made me regret selling mine 2 years ago....that is until you picked up the red label Yamaha....I had a red label FG-140 that I sold last month!!! Great tour Warren!
Hi Eric, great stuff! Yes, the final touches, overdubs, mixing and mastering were done here! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I grew up to my dad playing Sheffield Lab D2D albums and that sparked my interest in high-end audio and my love of music. Those albums still sound great 40 years later. I've never mixed or recorded a thing in my life but it's always been my dream to work in a studio.
Those Harrison EQs are amazing. You have to really learn how they work though! (Hint: The shelve EQ fundamental frequency changes depending how much you are boosting or cutting). Also I've seen one of those Gates EQ at a studio in Melbourne. The guy there said it was used for radios, (Not the radio but radios)
Amazing video as always!! Thanks so much! What was that talk of a Thurman Mic Pre (and then he said wih eq) when talking about Romeo and Juliet Dobro>Marshall>Thurman? Maybe I have the spelling wrong...I can't find it.
Hey Warren, interesting stuff about running the Al Smart ‘Stereo verses split mono’ The SSL quad compressor, is actually split mono (individual side chains) x 4, with one set of time constants, so the Al smart is flexible to use each side for separate tasks, the Quad has the best of all worlds across the mix… so you’ll have always been hearing your console comp split mono, with a single set of controls.
The album Pennybridge Pioneers, by Millencolin was recorded and produced there by Brett Gurewitz in 1999/2000. All in tape. The guitar tones are ridiculously good. In my opinion, the final mix is one of the best in punk rock/melodic hardcore world.
Another great tour - informative and always entertaining! Warren's a King amongst men. One thing though Warren: what's the other decent Lexicon PCM90 reverb setting? 'Vocal Magic' and...?
Hi Friend, I hope you're doing marvellously well! My friend and legendary producer Shelly Yakus recently hit me up and told me: 'Hey Warren, for your next studio tour, you need to check out Clay Blair's studio 'Boulevard Recording'. And I'm so glad I did! Formerly named 'Producer's Workshop', this studio has a lot of history: Pink Floyd's masterpiece 'The Wall' was overdubbed, mixed and mastered at this studio, Steely Dan tracked 'Aja' and 'Gaucho' there, they had legendary artists like Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Blink 182, as well as all former Beatles members. Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin described this studio as "acoustically perfect" and "one of the greatest recording rooms ever built". In this video, Clay tells us how 'The Wall' was recorded and mixed, and gives us a complete tour of the studio, including the live room where they tracked the record. I have to admit: I felt a bit like a kid in a candy store! Every great vintage hardware unit which plugin designers like to model: Clay has the original one. Plus a huge collection of guitars, pedals, amps, vintage organs (used on Beatles records) and microphones! You'll get to see a beautiful studio, get tons of great tips on how to put your favourite plugin emulations to use, and learn a lot about music history, I hope you enjoy it!
Heyy Everyone! I am a musician and this july we are going to record our first cover on a professional mic.I found this channel while searching for help as i have no idea ho to record a song ,mix it and make it sound good like professionals. Please Please someone help me and tell me few things. 1:What software is perfect and easy for recording vocals. 2-How to edit our tune the vocals like professional studios do.(like if plugins are required for the software you'll mention above please do mention them too) and 3-How to mix those vocals with song how to fit em in them to make them sound fresh cover straight from an expensive studio. Why are we going with recording on our own?Because we cannot afford studios. So please help me asap.
Warren, I'm dying to know what the three round white circles over your right shoulder are in the control room. I've seen them in studios in some of your other videos. Fantastic interview as always! Keep up the great work! Cheers!
Tracked on an MCI and mixed on a NEVE????? Are you frikkin’ kidding me?? 😳😳 Although I can hear it NOW…. For years that album eluded SO many of us…. It sounds SO good yet has no sonic footprint that any of us could ever identify. WOW.
Awesome as always,, love these studio tours keep them coming they are fantastic. I was wondering if you have the info on the stratocaster that he had in the video that was apparently out together by a local Luther ? He slightly touched on it but never mentioned the name of the builder, if you have that info I would greatly appreciate it.. Thank you again you ROCK
Love this tour warren. i really liked/enjoyed the old set up & stories. Btw is it still ok to submit videos of studios to you. I'm working in 3 studios here in manila & just want to share it. those three studios are different
Tape really is just amazing on vocals especially. He's right. Russell Elevado when working on Dangelo's record would put a tape machine in dangelos hotel room on tour, because they were both so against laptops or anything else on vocals! Everything Elevado does is to tape. Talk about altec's and esoteric gear. If you could ever visit with him in his studio that would be absolutely special.
hi warren, i have a question about recording vocals. I have no acoustic treatment in the bedroom where i record ... i would like to know what you think about kaotica eyeball or reflexion filter panel behind the mic ....can they be usefull to record a good vocal track ? do you have some advice to get better vocals ... i have a pro mic TLM 103 i think it's a good begin ;) ... thank you warren for your attention i'll wait for your reply
Thanks ever so much for the great comment AndreaCassetta, firstly I would baffle behind where the mic is pointing. That would be your greatest source of reverberation! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro thanks warren i record in the middle of the room ... the rocm is rectangular And empty.. do you think i need a reflection panel or is it useless ?
Great question! If the room is extremely live I would first make a vocal booth around yourself and then see if further reflections need to be dampened! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

grumpybb if you wanna trip on some gear they used, look up the Sheffield Lab mics. There are only 10 or so in existence
I've read about those in the past, really cool stuff. I think Bill Schnee has at least a couple of them.
This was great!
Those Harrison EQs are amazing. You have to really learn how they work though! (Hint: The shelve EQ fundamental frequency changes depending how much you are boosting or cutting). Hey, the EMI RS 124 PlugIn has the Fuse Mode. Also 3 Types of them. Really miss it in the 64 bit world.
you can still use it with soundradix 32 lives that port 32 bits plugins to 64 bit
Warren, I'm dying to know what the three round white circles over your right shoulder are in the control room. I've seen them in studios in some of your other videos. Fantastic interview as always! Keep up the great work! Cheers!

Warren, Clay said that the diffusion panels were made by Armstrong called studio tile? I have googled them and I can't find them. Any ideas?
Hi Gregory, hmm..that's a good question! Clay can you help out? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
hey there.
they look like plain old 12x12 armstrong ceiling tiles, sometimes called acoustic tiles. hth
Thanks ever so much for the great comment! I appreciate the insight! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Does anyone know what model Armstrong Studio tile they used? Especially if it's still being made.

The Lowrey is NOT on Here Comes The Sun. A Moog synthesizer and strings are used on that track.
