@@jpstone2976 Welcome to this channel anytime! I forgot to answer about the backing strip, sorry. I used a strip of thin canvas. It would be advisable on straight edges. A very thin stretchy vinyl would work out much better for straight and round edges. There are strips of cloth or vinyl ready to use we could find in some stores.
Hi sir, I'm just a beginner in this field hoping to learn. Just want to know what kind of thread you are using? Is that a nylon thread? Coz I tried nylon thread it keeps on breaking and destroy my bobbin :( really want to know and to learn. Thank you so much and thank you for sharing your videos.
Hello, I use 'regular polyester jupholstery thread' most of the upholsterers use it. Sizes 92 (regular), 138(thicker) For a better idea, please, check this link:www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TTE&Category_Code=polyester-thread You are welcome anytime!

+tyler daves You are right Tyler, I think 'in part-videos' is the solution not to get bored, and a 'soft background music' if I turn on my radio (lol). Thanks for your comment!
Perhaps the 'needle' is not the appropriate for the kind of 'thread'. Hopefully this video would give an idea: th-cam.com/video/vtfrcDS5WJQ/w-d-xo.html
Hi, I see that you are using some foam padding that looks to be 1/8 of an inch thick. What are they called? Close cell foam? Also, what is the name of the double sided adhesive tape that you use? Just watching your videos made me want to repair my beat up interior myself. Thanks.
mbsec The foam is 'polyurethane foam' 1/4" thick...advisable for the lateral panels when doing foamed designs on car seats. Cesar, Once again an excellent video and as usual you make it look so easy to do, something only those rare gifted teachers achieve. Regards, Geoff
Geoff Halstead Hi Geoff, I'm very happy that you have found these videos useful!!! ...I never thought some day, would be teaching upholstery!.. in other words, to become in an upholstery teacher on internet! LOL I only use the pinking shears to simulate that a part has been sectioned and try to make understand that it was cut from a bigger piece ...as in mechanics, when we slice some pieces to draw on paper. Thanks for watching! Cesar
Abraços do Brasil.
Hi Philip, Thanks for writing me. Well, nowadays, upholsterers have generally adopted 'triple transportation' (walking foot) industrial sewing machines ... so called because the three bars move while sewing ... this allows that while one 'foot' pressing down the material, the other foot is raised, then takes its turn the other foot and so on, and it does not allow the material to wrinkle ... the 'feed dog' which is below and has its 'small teeth' also has much to do, letting the material not wrinkle or do marks ... if you sew fabric or thin leather, then this 'feed dog' should have small teeth ... the needle also is involved with it ... a thin needle 110 = 18 for thin materials ... 140 = 22 for thicker materials such as canvas or leather ... these pieces are changed according to what one will work. If you go to work on cars and furniture these are already in the 'standard measure' and it is not necessary to change anything, just putting on its 'standard needle' 140 and work. Known brands of machines are the pfaff 1245-706, 2545, marks etc; durkopp & adler 767, 867; Juki LU 563, Consew 206 RB, Industrial Singer, etc. I don't know where are you writing me from, anyway I am sending a few pages so you can appreciate these machines. If you are in good financial condition, I'd recommend to buy 'a new one'. if not, then 'a used one' in good condition would be OK ...they do the same and metals last a long time, just giving them their necessary maintenance. www.sewingmachineoutlet.com/consewtn.htm www.pfaff-industrial.cn/pfaff/de/products/sewing/pfaffcatalog?matyp=sewing&mainbranch=&branch=&operation=&resultitem=pfaff1245-601c www.solentsew.co.uk/products/Durkopp-Adler-867-Classic.html www.advancedsewing.com/salespecials.html

dantech1, Thanks for subscribing!...Most of the upholsterers use the standard thread number 8 (here, in Mexico and other countries)...a thicker number zero for on top double stitches. Check: www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TTE&Category_Code=polyester-thread
Hace algún tiempo me atreví a preguntar si ud.

Thanks for watching my upholstery videos ! ...For this demonstration I'm using 'thin plastic canvas' as a 'backing'...its very strong and I cut it in 1 inch strips. Another materials can be used, such as, vinyl, denim fabric, etc. Some upholtery suppliers sell 'strip rolls' for this purpose.
¡Saludos mil!
Hi Emry, if you're referring to the 'yellowish glue/cement' I use in the video is the one which most of the upholsterers, artisans and shoemakers use...it comes in cans...'Tandy Leather' have it for sale. If you're referring to the 'double sided tape', the 'sticky substance' comes self attached and self protected for the plastic like strip we should peel off... Home Depot Stores and similars have this tape for sale. Hope it helps.
Emry Khurana Sailrite has a very good seam tape on rolls made for upholstery. One is a little more expensive but holds better. That's the one I use. Seamstick 3/8" Basting Tape for CanvasItem #: 129 www.sailrite.com/Seamstick-3-8-for-Canvas-60-YdsThis is a very good quality tape.

+Christian Brun Hi Christian, As mentioned lines above my pfaff is the 'old version' original, made in Germany (the machines manufactured in Germany have a 'small plate' in front part one side where, it appears 1245-706/47)...the 'new version' 1245-6/01have a 'plastic sticker' instead...this machine is manufactured in China, I do not know if Pfaff has given the permission for the trade mark...this machine have a cost of 2000 US Dollars approx...I think, it is a good sewing machine, it has a longer stitch length(8 mm) and its bobbin is 'jumbo'(bigger than mine). th-cam.com/video/c4maAXoM0nI/w-d-xo.html I hope you find this information useful!

Are you using a "top stitching thread" in the needle AND the bobbin? My top stitching thread keeps shredding as I sew.
Perhaps the 'needle' is not the appropriate for the kind of 'thread'. Hopefully this video would give an idea: th-cam.com/video/vtfrcDS5WJQ/w-d-xo.html

Hi,
I see that you are using some foam padding that looks to be 1/8 of an inch thick.
As for the tape, check:

Cesar,
Once again an excellent video and as usual you make it look so easy to do, something only those rare gifted teachers achieve.
Did you use Pinking shears for any particular reason when cutting the leather?
The four videos I've watched so far have taught me more than everyone else's, as well as all the books I've read.
Regards,
Geoff
Geoff Halstead Hi Geoff, I'm very happy that you have found these videos useful!!! ...I never thought some day, would be teaching upholstery!.. in other words, to become in an upholstery teacher on internet! LOL
I only use the pinking shears to simulate that a part has been sectioned and try to make understand that it was cut from a bigger piece ...as in mechanics, when we slice some pieces to draw on paper.
Thanks for watching!

Can you give a recommendation on a sewing machine for someone just starting out? Thank you for the videos.
Hi Philip,
Thanks for writing me.
If you are in good financial condition, I'd recommend to buy 'a new one'.
if not, then 'a used one' in good condition would be OK ...they do the same and metals last a long time, just giving them their necessary maintenance.

thank you very much

what is the white material you used under the leather? Is it a webbing of some sort to make the seam stronger?
Thanks for watching my upholstery videos ! ...For this demonstration I'm using 'thin plastic canvas' as a 'backing'...its very strong and I cut it in 1 inch strips. Another materials can be used, such as, vinyl, denim fabric, etc. Some upholtery suppliers sell 'strip rolls' for this purpose.
I believe the fabric backing strips are called “listing” tape

What type of glue do you use to stick plastic to leather?
Hi Emry, if you're referring to the 'yellowish glue/cement' I use in the video is the one which most of the upholsterers, artisans and shoemakers use...it comes in cans...'Tandy Leather' have it for sale.
If you're referring to the 'double sided tape', the 'sticky substance' comes self attached and self protected for the plastic like strip we should peel off... Home Depot Stores and similars have this tape for sale.
Hope it helps.
