I feel like they used an old/test design in the first trailer that they never planned on using in the final movie.They wanted to generate hype, which they did. It was a cheap move, but I dig this trailer and will FOR SURE go see it.
Doubt so. The first posters where it's just Sonic's silhouette show the ugly model. If they planned this it means it was ever since that reveal. Taking time to slowly release the ugly model. Way too much work and matfs.
The studio probably genuinely thought it looked ok. Seriously, when you're the one seeing how the model is made and rendered from the ground up, your opinion on it can become really skewed.
Nope, it was real. Not only were the posters already featured in theaters with the bad look, not only were there test screenings, but there was already a marketing campaign with that look as well. And to top it all off, the delay in the movie means that the producers didn't get their bonuses because the movie wasn't coming out on time. You want to know how important that bonus is to them? Just look at Superman's mustache in Justice League.
The animators killed it! That studio showed some dedication.
Just then in the calmness of the day, thousands of fans young and old of the entire Sonic franchise all simultaneously _screamed_ out in sheer utter relief-

I'm very happy with this design. Too bad he isn't voiced by Roger Craig Smith. I don't know if this movie will be good or not, but I'm definitely motivated to see it now.

I agree with OP. I was expecting something more similar to his personality in the cartoon or comics, snarky but with a lot of heart. His compassion is why he helps Tails-- Sonic as protag in his games is literally the dude risking life and limb to save others from robotic prisons, and convinces others to join in that freedom fighting.
This Sonic... maybe it's just the trailer but he seems a lot more selfish and unconcerned, both with his past world and with his "friend". His "powers" are what he's trying to protect, instead of protecting others. Seems OOC.
That said, I don't really have anything against trying new things. Making him a bit of an ass is sort of a very hollywood thing to do. It's not going to kill his character for me, it just means I'll like this incarnation less. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm so acclimated to this new Sonic now that when you showed the flash of the old Sonic I had a genuine fright come over me. In hindsight, I have no idea what they were thinking with that design. These animators are the best for putting in the extra work.
