I was hoping you could answer a question. I haven't yet watched all of your videos on red factors. I did hear you say in another video that you don't like to use red enhancers. I see you are using them here.. My question is whether red colouring is used only during molt or if you use it with babies. I have a pair of mosaic polychromes babies (two weeks) which I've been giving red eggfood. It looks like my babies are losing their white. I assumed that the colour food would enhance the red but leave the white. Any suggestions? They are looking pretty red and peach. thanks for your time :)
Yes color food can become dangerous if used in high quantity or high volumes at one time. I do only use it while the birds are molting becasue that is the only time you should be using it. You can use it while the chicks are in the nest and they will grow in the red feathers. It should not effect the white unless the birds red colors are spread throughout the entire canaries body. Also chicks feathers will be a little different from the adult feather that they will molt into. My liprchrome chicks feathers seem patchy when they first come in but once the chicks molt into their adult feathers that is when the food color works the best at enhancing the red and leaving the white feathers red. Hope that made some sense.
@@birdnerd Thanks for your response. At this point my mosaic polychrome babies are looking more like flamingos. There is very little white left. I'd rather have some white. So at this point, should I give red eggfood during their first molt. I'd like to enhance the red but get some white feathers back. She's starting to build a second nest.. next time no coloured egged until first molt. What age is that? Thanks again
Hello there, thanks for the videos. I have been having a hard time finding the same type of nests that you have. the outside style nest. where would I be able to find those to buy, I live in Canada so shipping might not be a problem from the US.
She should stay on the nest if you use plastic eggs. Many breeders replace their own eggs with fake eggs until the hen has laid all 4-5 of her eggs and then they will place her real eggs back into the nest for her to incubate them.
You can add the color food while the parents are feeding the chicks in the nest and the chicks will grow the red feathers from the start. Or you can wait until the chicks are about 6 weeks old, then you can start feeding them color food and when they start to molt into their adult feathers they will come in red.
Usually reasons why a canary won't sing much is either they are molting, already with a female so they don't sing as often, or there is a health issue going on.
They are probably fighting because they aren't in completely in breeding condition. You should put a divider in the cage and separate them. So that they can still see each other but can't fight. once the hen starts building a nest and you see them feeding each other through the bars that's a good sign that they are ready to breed with each other. You also need to make sure your lighting is correct (between 11-14 hours a day) and that they are getting the proper breeding diet (lots of egg food and veggies)
It can sometimes take up to 7-9 months or even longer for the gender to be 100% percent determined with young canaries. You could put all of the chicks in separate cages to see if the chicks start to try and sing. Then you would know if they are a male or not.

The pairs that are breeding for me now didn't start until a little later in my flock so they will be breeding until April.
