I met Rory once here in New York, playing at My Fathers place in Roslyn, N.Y. Got to hang backstage with him for a bit. he was a rather quiet guy, but nice as all hell...trully one of the Great guitarists......"keep Rockin"................. \m/
So sorry I never got to meet him, didn't discover him until after his death. Such a great talent, I would say a Gift from somewhere??? I've read much about him and feel like I've come to know who Rory was. A great spirit that had everything to give.... unselfishly...did just that... Thank you.... Rory Gallagher the guitarist by which all others are judged!!!
We share the same fate, Curt. I also discovered him 5 years after his passing. But very quickly he became my favourite guitarist forever. He is still talking to us with his Songs and it seems to me I can feel his soul when I hear him play
These last few words from Donal just summed up Rory, really good rare pictures too Laffey. Thanks for your vids mate, haven't forgot about "Sugar Mama". 100*
laup yoccm I do wonder if Rory had recovered instead of dying, and regained his health, following the liver transplant,if maybe he would have settled down. Sometimes priorities change after something like that. But sadly he passed, and we will never know what might have been.
@AceHermes yes, it was 1980 when Rory played in new zealand. I even had the tour poster "Top Priority". He also appeared on TV for an interview. Remember, this was at the hight of the post-punk disco era (or error). The interviewer asked Rory what his plans were if he were to retire, he stated that he would peobably be a session musician. I remember that question!
it is rory, must be inverted photo, its his fender esquire, that he put a strat picup into to make it a telecaster, he used it for alot of slide guitar, RIP Rory - thanks for all the great tunes!
Hi Laffeylad! Great interview, thanks for posting it. I would have appreciated an e-mail from you before seeing my pics on TH-cam, though. As an administrator of the RG group on Flickr, I would very much like you to get in touch with our members before using their photos. Thanks in advance, cheers, martine.
Damn, so he developed anxiety about flying from all the touring, was prescribed medication to combat that, which made him drink, which wore his liver down, which made him get painkillers, which wore his liver down even more until he had to get a transplant, which put him in hospital where he contracted a staphylococcal infection that killed him. How tragic, must have been hard to come to terms with
Breaks your heart. I don't have much faith in doctors. I was getting headaches using computers for a while, the doctors wanted to prescribe me some drugs. Then someone suggested I get my eyes checked and of course turned out I just needed glasses!
NO INTIMATE RELATIONS. What is Donal's idea of an intimate relationship anyway? Could he be referring to deep love, soulmate stuff? Or is just refering to sexual relations. I don't pretend to know. Although Rory never married, and isn't know to have lived with a woman, that doesn't rule out friends with benefits situations, if the woman was also agreeable to being discreet. He was very private, and stated he didn't discuss his relationships with his friends, so maybe not with Donal either. Rory literally lived out of suitcase, with his brother in his back pocket for decades. He didn't like course talk and was fully aware of how men can yammer on about sex and their conquests in general. Can you imagine the blather on rock tours? Doesn't seem like he'd want to give people fodder for gossip, based on accounts of his reserved nature.
Agreed most accurate comment on the video you only have to listen to his music to know he had expirienced women and the heart break that can come with romantic relationships all these so called experts obviously aren't hearing his music because I hear it loud and clear you can't fake that stuff. Maybe his brother is the one with relationships issues.
I bet Rory was just a perfectly private person that his brother couldn't even discover any of that personal stuff about him. I mean I could even keep my personal relationship including any sexual encounters with people away from my family, especially my brother even though we used to live in the same house. Or maybe Donal just referred to "general" personal relationship that is visible; like dating/married like most people did
I knew him for many years! There will never be another musician like Rory. He was very humble!
Margaret - how wonderful!! can you tell us a little about him please?
Happy 7 1st birthday dear Rory. We miss you down here.

Tragically unnecessary death. Why wasn't Donal taking closer care of him ?- he made enough out of him.
you're an idiot
Danol was not a doctor.
Rory was his own man, thought he knew best, Donal and Gerry McAvoy kept asking Rory to go get some help but you can lead a horse to water etc etc.
