  • Barton Gellman was among the journalists who predicted in 2020 that President Trump would not admit defeat if he lost the presidential election. Now, in a cover story for The Atlantic, Gellman says the former president is in an even better position to seize power. He speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about why he believes democracy will be on trial in the 2024 presidential election.

Imagine, where we be if Gore had won that race? Would Iraq and Afghanistan wars occurred? Would Gore’s environmental policies have us going in a better direction by now? I wonder if we could have maintained the balanced budget, left to us by Clinton?
I can imagine we’d be doing better in so many ways.

@@debrasmith4149 I wonder how many people realize/remember that the final vote count in Florida to decide the ultra-close race, was *stopped* by the Supreme Court, and the win simply given to Bush. And next, we have 20-year-wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, with the Iraq war being based on lies by the Bush administration about "weapons of mass destruction" and imminent "mushroom clouds over American cities!" - nuclear and biological weapons which Iraq didn't have.

White Power and Justin Mohn may not be the scariest people in America. They are plenty scarry. Mohn’s moral/ emotional equivalents are active in all manner of activities, and yet to astonish us. But here I ask a deeper question. Who are these equivalents, in the organized units who operate ‘programs’ at deep layers of society, in black operations, in our towns and cities, carrying out what I call ‘stress- torture’, what some call ‘experimentation’?
For, these units target people the way Putin targets people; and exercise psychological torture the way Pinochet exercised physical torture. Some of our Government is doing this.
These programs target approximately 400,000 individuals across the country. These are being tortured by way of (1) strangers gang stalking you and strangers taking hundreds of photographs of you, or filming you; (2) someone monitoring and tracking you by plane or drone, when you step outside of your home, wherever you go, and the same planes and drones passing right over the roof of your home, grazing the roof of your home, at 15 minute intervals through the day, when you are home; (3) someone sending helicopters to hover over your home, on a appointed hour, for instance, at 10PM; (4) someone activating sleep deprivation techniques through the night, to keep you from sleeping until you begin to experience dissociation; (5) someone staging car collisions intended to maim you or kill you; (6) someone releasing pesticides over you from an UAV; and activating the Heat Ray (EMF) from a small drone. And finally, gaslighting you to your neighbors, family, friends, business colleagues, and such.
The torture programs express Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib torture techniques adapted to American society. To what purpose? We don’t know. The human mind can only take so much, thus (1, 2, 3);. car accidents can maim you or kill you; chemicals and sleep deprivation can cause the destruction of your nervous system and kill you. Gaslighting means you must abandon your town, your city, lose your job, friends, run to restart your life somewhere, only to find them waiting for you there. Suicide is not far away now….
Their mission: to create the conditions which make practical survival impossible; overstress the nervous system to make biological survival impossible. Murder without murder!
We know from Sergeant Joe Hickman that Dr. Mengele was not just a criminally depraved German… These programs, here, today, need Dr. Mengeles, American ones. Some of our Government is run by Dr. Mengele types.
A prominent figure on the OP has identified the helicopter pilots as retired Navy (they hovered over her home); a friend of mine from High School, a retired Marine, was involved in gang stalking me; an active duty State Trooper attempted to steer me into a head-on collision (with my wife being in the car); a plain cloth Agent (Police Officer or FBI) pointed a gun to my head in San Francisco, at a time when I began to report on the terrorism. The sleep deprivation program, on the other hand, was conducted by White Power. And this night, a helicopter passed over and over the roof of my home, all night long. Sleep deprivation - 700 nights, so far. This is the biggest weapon these terrorists hold: sleep deprivation.
To my knowledge, monsters like Justin Mohn or the White Power groups do not own helicopters. Some, in our Government, do. Military helicopters attacked my home, where I lived previously. Every night that I lived there.
Some of our Government operates in the dark. They create a black site around the targeted individual. And torture there. Especially when you’re doing good. They hate the good. Like Putin. Some of our Government is like that.
It conducts its business there, in this black operation. It is the Government though. Some illegitimate deep layers of it, but the Government nevertheless. There are Putins and Pinochets in there, in the dark, in the deep layers. There are Dr. Mengeles.
So, it is important to see that Putin and Justin Mohn types are in there. The only difference is that the depraved criminal Mohns act once; these other groups of Justin Mohns are carrying out programs, by creating black sites around the targeted individual and torture every day in assorted ways (1- 6).
They are so evil that not one of them has yet become a whistleblower! This means that it is as black as it can be in there.
America has rules and regulations that are meant to preserve freedom and democracy; they allow for the greatest of freedoms; and it has rules and regulations established in the dark by the likes of Putin, Kim, the Ayatollah suspending the rule of law - ruthless criminals with a program. Ruthless criminals with an idea! They are Americans. In their own eyes, the best of Americans.. The true Americans, the legitimate ones…
There may be several ‘programs’ and a number of ‘lists’. The no- fly list is exposed and it is understandable. It can act oppressively but also concerns our safety. I have flown all over the world and re-entered America from a number of countries over decades and until just two months ago, and I was never questioned, my luggage has never been checked, I am not on that list. So, there must be a number of programs, lists, whatever.
The program that I know began in 2001, under Bush, but was intensified and underwent a massive expansion when Trump began his ascent to the Presidency.
America has the greatest potential for goodness; but there is a demonic concealed inside it. This demonic wants to be near infinite: it is, after all, carrying out a selection process.
Psychological torture ends being unbearable - so it is not something distinct from physical torture, which is unbearable. Imagine: someone comes to the door of your house and kicks it. Fifteen minutes goes by and he kicks it again. How many kicks, how many days will your nervous system survive before you kill him (should he continue despite your pleas)? How many planes, grazing the roof of your home, time and time again?
The question we must ask: when will this demonic overwhelm the fragile free good? When will these gangs of American Putins and Crown Princes types triumph overall? If they are not exposed?

Every nation has its tipping points and none can be complacent, but America has been headed down this path for some time now. I sincerely hope that your country finds its way safely through this threat, but it will take time and perseverance and above all......an emphasis on education and consequences for a complete lack of integrity for many in positions of power and influence.......which means you have got to de-escalate the primacy of money in politics and social policy.

The moment he wouldn't agree to accept the results of the election in his debate with Hillary Clinton, he should have been disqualified from being a candidate. The fact that we as a society just let that slide was really a crossing of the Rubicon. Now it's not just the people in his cult, but more and more politicians, media outlets, people in positions of power. Being old enough to have watched this country slide rightward towards authoritarianism for decades the trend always indicated it would wind up here but now that we're here at the precipice of it I don't know how to actually absorb the reality of it. I'm seriously thinking about what to do with my family if or when full on right wing authoritarianism takes hold. We might leave the us for another country.

A comparatively smaller group vs the deeply misinformed right who believe things like the fireman and refuse to even consider any other evidence. It’s so bad we’re now watching as right wingers are dying of Covid at rates 5x that of those on the left. Why? Because they won’t get vaccinated and refuse to wear masks. So they die. And with all the reports from coast to coast of this phenomenon they still think it’s “fake news” until they end up dead and the family posts a GoFundMe account to help with funeral costs because “{insert name} loved his/her family and loved this country and will never be forgotten”. We’ve seen it thousands of times now. That’s scary cult like commitment to misinformation. If they’re willing to die for their commitment to their warped ideology then just imagine what they’ll do to the rest of us still living in reality.

We also need to encourage the press to challenge people/politicians they interview to substantiate what is said. Yesterday, on PBS [Amanpour & Co] a legislator from Wisconsin said that the Freedom to Vote Act is against Voter ID. That is patently false; it includes Voter ID. There are those who STILL believe that since these POC cannot legally be enslaved as in the 1600's then they ( any POC ) should not live in this country. HATRED is the MAGA's kindred spirit. That is the glue that holds them together. Magas don't care that DJT and GOP could care less about them. In practice he is right, in principle he is wrong. And therein lies much of the problem. There are too many ways to vote over too long a period of time and too many ways votes are counted by too many politically motivated agents. The national election should be a national holiday so that everyone can go to the polls. No votes should be accepted after election day. Absentee ballots should remain in effect and submitted with a voter registration card and ID. No mail-in ballots. A hard copy of all ballots should be retained. Votes should be counted electronically. Voting machines should be certified by technology experts with no connections to the machine manufacturer. People are upset because they no longer have confidence in the system. Democrats whined about it in 2016 and Republicans are doing it in 2020. If election procedures continue to cease to make any sense, the anxiety will increase and we will have big trouble in America. Our system is based on free and fair elections. If that goes away we're toast!

Why would they? For decades, Congress has whined about the 2yr term being an unending campaign, constantly hounding donors to re-elect them, and in this century with partisan cable news, the Pres.ratings never end either. Thus, it embodies the cherry-picking fallacy. Rational analysis involves the search for evidence followed by conclusion formation on the basis of that evidence. In contrast, conservatives hold their views, form a conclusion on the basis of those views, and then look for the evidence that supports that conclusion.

For example, it took about 70 million dead, bankrupting whole nations (such as the UK) and two nuclear detonations to remove three people (Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito) from power. What if the UK had dealt with them in 1932 when they were not so powerful or had annexed so many countries?

In an odd way, this is where "guns don't kill people" rings true. The U.S. military and police forces have some of the biggest guns and best training in the world, including a variety of nonlethal tools as you mentioned. But the Commander in Chief and his subordinates did not bring that capacity to bear.
Some of them say they were trying to avoid interfering as strongly as they did when BLM peacefully protested months before. But the Trump rally was not peaceful. They were warned. It was easily distinguishable from BLM.
Military leadership argues they did their best. When Gen. Colin Powell watched it unfold, he did not believe that possible. Leaders of the DC national guard assert that their superiors sat on their hands, stopping them from acting.
Overall, it looks like the U.S. military's competence took a hit during the Trump years, or Army leaders refused to act. It's possible all of these explanations fit. Hopefully, Congress will demand more from military leadership. If these people were in over their heads, there must be other people who can better fill those roles.

    1) The entire theocratic layer to the Jan 6th riot and the theocratic subversion underway in America entered the public's awareness. Mainstream news finally started to report on Christian nationalism. I remember asking why they weren't talking about it, as if it was only about Trump and the election. Even the Jan 6th committee wasn't talking about it, not out in the open anyway. But the GOP couldn't hide their game, thanks to MTG and Boebert, and soon secular America was defending the Establishment Clause against religious imperialists who won't stay in their SECT. Don't forget, the GOP conceded that they recognized declaring America a Christian nation would be unconstitutional but THAT THEY WOULD VOTE FOR IT ANYWAY. That vote won't fly, hence the base is willing to resort to good old reliable violence.
    2) Project 2025 is published, available for anyone and everyone's eyes, and terrifying.

Palestinians can stop the war by having hostages returned and Humas surrenders. Humas knows they can win the sympathy of uninformed groups by simply sacrificing their own people. Who's really wrong here. Supporting Humas is simply foolish. Humas needs to stop killing its own population. Why should Israel stop trying to remove terrorist preventing them from attacking in the future.

We just need to pull together, live by rule of law, respect for God and Country, live for the real purpose of our liberties by examples of how we respect and help each other, with truth and principles of how we live,..
That is the best way (WE ALL) can save our country,..😊🇺🇸

Do NOT despair. We MUST VOTE BLUE AT ALL COST! The votes will be cast and should electors decide to overturn the votes cast, it can be brought to the Supreme Court Ultimately IF WE PUT IN MORE JUSTICES. Of course, this would not need to happen if we
    1) end filibuster and pass voters rights federally
    2) get involved locally to canvas Democrats.
Check voter rolls to ensure they have not been removed.
    3) Get involved with areas where people who need rides to polls too far away can get them.

You can;t go down to that level of corruption...hopefully there are robust laws on the books they just have to bloody enact them! Unless of course something far more nerferious is occuring globally to discredit voters and the democracies they vote in. I'm very concerned as this not just a U.S. problem Trump was the catalyst that opened our eyes...weather one supports him or not (I don't) ironically he did many a favour.

There are two kinds of rules: those you can break and those you can't.
Republicans know they can't betray their primary voters. They will not only lose their elections, but they'll receive death threats and face terrorism. That's a rule they can't break. So when those voters demand breaking democratic rules (fair popular vote elections, presidential court appointments, equal rights, etc.), most break them.
Democrats see this dynamic, but their primary voters are not united around breaking rules. They're not even united on ending the Senate filibuster, the rule blocking them from enacting what most voters support. Without that unity, they can't get all 50 Dems to support popular legislation protecting voting, parents, women, refugees, Dreamers, etc.
There is still a lot they can do, creatively, within the rules. But it's hard. For example, Biden could follow a court ruling and declare an end to DACA, submit the rule to Congress for review, and assemble majority votes overturning the rule to protect Dreamers. But he'll have to risk being the president who ends DACA if his allies come up even a vote short in the Senate. See Jody Freeman and Matthew Stephenson, "Opinion: How a little-known law might help protect the ‘dreamers’" Washington Post (Aug. 6, 2021).
Like Barton Gellman said, "only one party is willing to lose an election" to preserve democracy. Breaking the rules isn't just easier and more advantageous for the GOP. It's what GOP voters demand. Everyone else has to work that much harder to keep that influence in check. Maybe democracy's defenders need to set some unifying rules.
