  • Did you ever wonder how new varieties of fruit are discovered? Join me as I spend a day with seedling hunter Julian Lara. Julian has spent his whole life collecting rare and exotic tropical fruits. Lean how he spent 20 years working with Star Apples until he finally came up with the delicious Lara Star Apple. I was lucky to get a taste of the Lara Carambola developed by his father and I was very entertained by the origin story of his Hialeah Red cultivar of avocado.

Our neighbor from our previous place had this tree but the all green variety. Over 20ft in height. When the flowers bloom, its gives out a hauntingly sweet fragrance. When we relocated from that place due to a new land owner, my dad bought that tree from our neighbor (who was moving to another place too) and used the trunk of that tree as one of posts of our house now. Hardy wood and from experience, i can say its termite resistant.

Well, I kind of already am one! Everytime I buy an avocado, then eat it (sometimes share with mom), plant the seed. I Don't graft them seedlings, well even if I wanted to I can't.And grow them in the hopes of giving me fruit one day. So I kind of consider myself as the minor seedling hunter! 14 seeds. Today, I bought a mango, unfortunately though, It's not polyembryonic. I will eat the mango tomorrow. And,... I will plant the seed in the hopes that (deep breath) NO SPIDER MITES AND FUNGUS GNATS WILL ATTACK MY NEW MANGO SEEDLING! It was so painful losing my first ever mango, don't want to go through that again. I really want to buy a polyembryonic mango one day. Do they even sell polyembryonic mango here in Bulgaria? I'm not sure, but sure do hope so.

My 2 surviving seedlings from last year are bursting with new growth! You were so right about cutting off their poor little heads. I have another 20 trying to hatch in weather far too cold. I'm tossing up... heat mat or let them work for it... considering I will be cultivating a frost hardy variety I'm thinking resist the temptation to rush and leave out the heat mat.
