    @dpapaioannow - I used to play with baroque/early music musicians who used 430 for classical music. You have to get a tuning fork tuned to that pitch in order to tune. Baroque performance is usually tuned to A415. It take a while to develop a switch in your head to "hear" 430 as A and play in tune - for a couple of hours, and then go to another rehearsal and switch again to either 415 or back up to 440-442 for modern. The first few months are a challenge!

    my band director has told us about how important it is to understand how to actually tune an instrument (trumpet here). And I completely agree with you. A Musician should be able to tune their instrument without the help of anything other than their ears. Fun Video. When you put the tuning fork on the string my mind was blown. and the term you are looking for is resonance. The strings resonant freaquency is where it vibrates. putting a 440hz fork on a properly tuned A string will make it vibrate

    @Mauriz9shredd - same pitch, but a loud pizz may have some distortion, and will decay quickly; hard for the ear to accurately hear and assess whether it needs adjusting. Best pizz tuning solution is repeated quiet pizzicatos, like a mandolin, you can tune quite well with that. -Generally if your pizz is hard enough to break the string, it will make an ugly sound. If the sound is resonant, you are probably safe from breakage. If you break one or two, you'll discover where the limit is!!

    It takes practice. If they're really stuck, you can take your violin to a violin shop (NOT a general music store) and they can make sure the pegs are okay, and maybe put some peg dope on them so they don't stick. If the violin is new, there could be a problem with the pegs - wrong shape, or not long enough. Violin shop can check that.

  • @AllysonsViolinStudio
    @AllysonsViolinStudio  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MucusFelidae - Yup. But an electronic tuner won't help develop your ears. And when you accidentally smash your electronic tuner on the fancy tile floor of the place where you have a gig, it's nice to whip a tuning fork out of the crud at the bottom of your case and still be able to tune everything up nicely.

  • @AllysonsViolinStudio
    @AllysonsViolinStudio  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you're just playing by yourself, you can tune to anything you want. If you are playing with other instruments, try to stay closer to 440. Orchestras often use 442, but it can be challenging for wind instruments.

    I really loved this video, it was a nice little lesson since I'm stubborn, and have insisted I'm going to learn to play violin on my own. The other day I popped an E string on my violin because it wouldn't stay in tune, and found out I had to take it to a shop to have it set up properly. Le sigh.

    Peg. Use the peg to get it within a half-tone or so, and then you can use the fine tuner for the final adjustment. Occasionally someone puts a 1/2-sized e string on a full-sized violin and that really doesn't work, but presumably that is not the case in this instance.

    The strings won't break if you're tuning them to the pitch they are supposed to play at. Double check that you have the correct strings on the correct location, and then use a violin tuner webpage. Worst case, you might be able to get some help if you go to a fiddle or violin shop and buy a new set. They might put them on and tune them for you if you ask.

    thank you so much! that`s exactly the info. I was looking for! would you please tell me the frequenzy, the G and D string are vibrating? the difference between them should be the same, as from the A to the E string (?) and what does that mean, if you play irish fiddle music, using unplugged strings? will they not be sounding a little bit "off" ? Thanks in advance for your reply! :-)

    Before, during and after. I used gut-core strings for decades, and when I play baroque we use hand-made gut strings. So we tune a lot! Synthetic-core strings hold their pitch better, and I hear that steel-core strings are very stable. Normally any change in the temperature or humidity will put the strings out of tune, that's just the way it goes. :-)

  • @AllysonsViolinStudio
    @AllysonsViolinStudio  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had a few e strings snap! - with a loop-end string, they sometimes break where the loop goes over the hook on the fine tuner. The good thing about this is that they snap away from your face when they go! Because the e string is a single wire, it doesn't generally break as often as the lower strings, which fray and then snap. More often, they start to whistle and get a nasty sound long before they break, which means it's time for a new one.

    I just accidentally erased someone's question - sorry! Hit the wrong button! The question was about an e string that would only tune up to a D, not go up to an E. - There is a problem. You may have a smaller string intended for a smaller-sized violin. Or else it is not put on properly - is it rolled onto the proper peg, and is it mounted correctly at the tail-piece? If you have the right size of string, and it is put on correctly, there should be no problem tuning up to e. :-)

    Hi Allyson,
    I'm not sure about a guitar being harder to tune than a violin.
    I think it depends on what you are used to, every guitar has basically the same tuning mechanism, cogwheels, to tune / fine tune and such...
    and on the neck of a guitar are frets... which easely give you the luxery of just owning a 440 (A) fork to tune your whole guitar quite accurate...

  • @AllysonsViolinStudio
    @AllysonsViolinStudio  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, short-term, use a tuner which tells you whether to go up or down (the sort where you play into it, not the sort that plays a pitch that you have to match). Long-term - sing! Make swoopy vocal sounds and figure out how to make your voice go up and down. Eventually sing along with tuning and try going either up or down with your voice - it will become obvious. It can take a few years to get comfortable with tuning.

  • @AllysonsViolinStudio
    @AllysonsViolinStudio  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have the right string and the right size, it will work. Make sure you don't have a D string instead of an A string - they're easy to mix up once they're out of the packet. And make sure you are putting a full-size string on a full-size violin. That's about it - should work. Good luck!

  • @AllysonsViolinStudio
    @AllysonsViolinStudio  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rehairs are about $100 in this area - if you rough up the hair with a key you may be going back for another one really soon! It may be effective in a quick-and-dirty sort of way, but this is not something I do or advocate.

    hello I just bought a violin I decided to learn playing that online I watched lots of films here about preparing the bow I could not here any sound from that .....I put rosin on it but I dont know how much should I continue applying rosin on...I would be thankful if somebody could help me

    • @AllysonsViolinStudio
      @AllysonsViolinStudio  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maria Zamani - I can't really imagine what the problem might be. If it is a normal bow and the hair is actual horse hair, it will make sound if you have applied some rosin. The quantity and quality of the sound is dependent on your technique and skill, of course, which will take time.

    • @maryamzamani5979
      @maryamzamani5979 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you I think something is wrong with the bow

    • @Kragnorak
      @Kragnorak 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Maria Zamani My offhand guess is your bow has synthetic hair instead of horsehair - it takes an annoyingly long time to get synthetic hair to grip in my experience. I had a cello bow that I promptly returned for an upgrade once because of this

    • @AllysonsViolinStudio
      @AllysonsViolinStudio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just keep adding more rosin! I have never seen synthetic hair on a bow, so I don't know if that might be a cause.

  • @AllysonsViolinStudio
    @AllysonsViolinStudio  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    ...and remember that as you tune higher, you are putting significantly more pressure on your violin through the bridge, particularly for the e-string. If you have an older violin, this can be a real concern. I really don't recommend tuning higher than 442.

    • @AllysonsViolinStudio
      @AllysonsViolinStudio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +prettykittylulu - always tune by loosening the peg a bit first, then then tune up to the note. Don't just turn the peg back and forth hoping to find the right spot in the middle. If you twist the peg/string higher than the note you risk breaking the string.

      Instead of "tac tac tac," think of "wowowowow." You want the wowow to be as slow as possible: It indicates the beat, or difference, frequency.

    I've noticed that when I want to play the violin with a recording, like the group Secret Garden, I noticed that my violin seems to be out of tune. But according to my electronic tuner, at 440, I'm in tune. Do professionals tune their instruments differently? Thanks!

    • @AllysonsViolinStudio
      @AllysonsViolinStudio  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many professionals tune to either 442 or 441 depending what is usual amongst their colleagues. Back when recordings were on vinyl or tape, they commonly played back a halftone higher. That shouldn't happen with digital, but it's worth considering.

    Pitch pipes are not perfectly precise, but they're good enough for the early years before you can actually play precisely in tune. You have to slow down, and pay attention with your ears. Listen to one, then the other, then back to the first. Does it sound the same, sorta the same, really not the same..... It does require a bit of effort.

      The violin is MUCH louder than her voice (that's a problem in most videos I've heard on TH-cam), so try turning the volume way down on a second playing of the video. Get what she says the first time through, then turn it way down and listen again. That should help reduce distortion, unless your computer's sound is really bad LOL For practice at home, I often put a brass mute on the violin's bridge, to keep the volume at a comfortable level for my ears. It helps a great deal with roommates and pets, too :) but be aware that it also affects the tone and play of the violin; you should remember to practice without the mute, as well.

      One In a Million Sounds like your pegs are wedged in too far. If they are wedged really tight, you might need to take it to someone for help. Or wait for a really cold day - the wood will contract with the cold and then the pegs will slip more easily!

    I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else wants to uncover learning to play the violin try Nadazma Expert Violin Helper (just google it ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my colleague got cool results with it.

    My violin is satan. I'm trying to tune the A string but it refuses. I can get it to an A but the string is too loose so it's like an octav or two lower and it just sounds awful. And I can't for the life of me get it even an octav higher. To the point of nearly breaking the string it's still only at like a D.
