the touch bar is not useless, when using a gimbal you can adjust your iso on the fly without having to turn any dials on the camera, with the gimbal on. It's amazing for that purpose alone.
I love how fast it is to use. Definitely not useless.
Still shooting the EOS R I bought back in 2019. Mostly landscapes from a tripod. Does a fantastic job.
I still use my EOS R with Canon 24-70 f2.8 and Samyang 85mm f1.4. I can't complain about anything. It's a professional camera, that produces amazing results. If only it had a dual card slot :)
I bought the R for 899USD on the canon USA site refurbished during a Christmas sale!
They included the battery grip and a canon camera bag, too!

I just got offered $1000 trade in for mine in Hong Kong
Earlier this week on canon's website for just like a 24hr window, they put up new refurbished models of the Canon R body for only $899 and it included a free battery grip (which retails for $250). I was one of those people who snatched it up.
My current camera body is the RP so I grabbed the R as an upgrade cuz that price is irresistible. Tho I do plan on making the R a backup body of mine when I get enough funds to purchase the new Canon R6 Mark II, which I'll probably purchase sometime in the next 6 months or so.

Yeah I came across that and grabbed it so quick. Im super happy with it so far! Completely insane price compared to anywhere else!
I've had my R for 3 to 4 years now, exclusively for photography, which it handles more than capably. Lack of IBIS has never resulted in not capturing a photo I wanted, made even easier now that I've added two RF lenses to my collection (24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200mm f/2.8). I don't hate the touch bar, but wouldn't miss it either (left tap - eye detect on/off, right tap - histogram on/off, center - focus mode). It did fall off a mountain trail with me. I ended somewhat scratched up, but no harm to the body of the camera, so no complaints about body build.
Awesome feedback, Kevin! That 70-200 f2.8 is a dream of mine and I hope one day I will have it. By the way, I you were to update your camera, what would you choose at this point?
@@VideoMakerTwist I've not given that much thought, but I guess I'd go with the R6 MkII. As a hobbyist, I would not be able to justify the price of an R5, and the R6 would serve me well in low-light situations (I do a fair amount of photography in a cathedral setting.). However, I like the "sweet spot" of 30MP sensor of the R since I also do a fair amount of bird photos. I want it all! :-)
also use mine since 2019 exclusively for photography and its a great performer. recently got an R7 for my nature and macro stuff but the R is still miles ahead for IQ so its my first choice for landscapes and the occasional portraits
I always loved this camera. If it weren't for the lack of dual card slots it would be such a good professional choice. The sensor is gorgeous and the autofocus is totally adequate.
Yes, agree about the dual card slots, but I got used to it. It's the 4th year of this camera in my bag and didn't have any card issues until this point. Let's hope for the best! I now have the R6 mk II as well, which has dual card slots so I can be more relaxed now, hahah!
@@VideoMakerTwist Canon must honestly only make these single card slots because they are otherwise so good it would be detrimental to the sale of their higher models.
@@JakeFosmirePhotomaybe, but at the time the Eos R came out they were clearly aiming for professional photographers (I say that because the lens options have been high quality, high price from the very beginning of the RF mount). I personally wonder if it was more a matter of thinking that modern cards were reliable enough to eliminate that redundancy, and they backpedaled when users cried foul.
I bought the R6 as a long overdue upgrade from the 5D mk II. It promised a world of improvement. It was sensational for stills and a world of frustration for video. I wasted a solid six months trying to understand its logic, its foibles, it’s "can do this but not that" compromises. It became a hot mess of frustration, too many buttons, too much second guessing, too much camera overriding, getting in the way, undermining my choices. I sold it. Bought a cinema camera, it’s a dream to film with. I rarely have wasted footage now. Still use the 5D2 for photographs, it’s still great.
But there were things I loved about the R6.
Shooting stills from the waste using the flipped out touch screen is a magic style of shooting portraits with all sorts of benefits. It created a defining look to my shots. EF and RF lenses, cool. Low light legend. Same batteries, bonus. The focusing options. Yeah, I miss those.
And things I truly disliked about the R6. The IBIS, destroyed more footage than it saved (and you can’t just use a stabilised lens with the IBIS off @#$%^!!!!). Almost the same megapixel sized sensor. The crazy layout and amount of buttons with baffling user logic. The micro HDMI port. Screen too small for filming. Frustrating menus for filming. Trying to do everything with an OS that feels like DOS. The R6 is a genius camera with multiple personality disorder.
The EOS R appears to have everything I loved about the R6 and nothing that I disliked. A primary photography camera with 20 years ahead of it. Handy, quality video back up. Massive array of legacy lenses before it. And an old price.
Touch Bar for me is standard ISO, extremely useful. Is close to the thumbs resting position so if you need to change the Iso on the fly it takes no time.
very nice to see a honest person, not these sales person pushing negative information. The canon eos r5 has a overheating issue and the newer equipped with internal fan.
Thank you for the video. Adding from my end. The touch panel is not fully useless. I set it up to adjust ISO with sliding, left touch - auto ISO, right touch - 100 ISO (I mostly shoot with it, but people who e.g. shoot with 400 ISO, can set it there). This brought flexibility when light conditions change, I immediately switch between my preferred sensibility and automatic to keep the shutter speed and aperture. Of course, I use the lock function for the sensor panel not to touch it unintentionally by mistake
This review so make sense,every single points you mentioned are so true.For the reels,Videos for smartphone R6,R5 produce too much big size files.I can go R5 financially but I would like to keep R because the file size and my main works are for FB,Instagram contents normally so
I have a EOS R6 and the EOS R is still my work horse camera for photography till this very day becuz of it's 30 megapixel.

@@VideoMakerTwist For sure, I would upgrade to the R6 mkii someday to make it as a B cam for video to achieve a longer recording time next to my C70. Afterall, the extra 4 megapixels from the previous 20 megapixels is a advantage for photography and it also meet the standards for modern cameras.
Also excellent for Architectural Photography because of the excellent sensor and not forgetting that Tilt Shift lenses are manual, so why pay for better auto focus

The EOSR is still a beast of a camera for the money. You can find these used under 1k. It is an even better photo camera as well. I just sold mind mainly because I needed 10bit otherwise it was perfect for professional work as a C Camera or hybrid.
What did you buy instead?
@@VideoMakerTwist it was tough. I needed something that could match my C200. The EOSR was great but I couldn't push the video image to match the C200 unless I really nailed the WB during the shot. My budget was 2k which is a competitive segment in the used market. I ended up finding a very low shutter count R6 for $1800. I'm not a fan of the IPB or 20mp but overall it was the natural pick. I miss the EOSR and would recommend it used to anyone starting out.
What's you honest opinion about IPB compression? On my EOS R, I always use ALL-I, but I only have 8-bit. On a EOS R6 II, I would only have IPB, but 10-bit. Is it really a downside to work with IPB?
@@VideoMakerTwist I have never noticed a difference between IPB and All I on any camera. I obviously do see a difference between Clog vs Standard and 10bit vs 8bit.
@@VideoMakerTwist The EOSR has the best 8bit I’ve ever seen. That high bit rate and Log carry that 8bit further then it’s other 8bit peers.

I use mine mostly for thumbnails but I'm making a few video clips here and there too. As I usually just use actioncams, phones, dji pocket 3... I can say that the EOS R video looks incredible for my use cases 😁

I use this camera for astrophotography (modded) and it’s an absolute steal in 2023 for that purpose.
My personal camera is the R and I have an R5 for work. I shoot both video and stills an have liked using both for the most part.
I just bought the R6 mark II and I like it. When you say you liked both for the "most part", what would you improve on these two cameras that you're using (R and R5)?
@@VideoMakerTwist I've been a video guy most of my life using broadcast television cameras. I've since changed my career where I'm doing both stills and video with the Canons. I'm just not as fast with them shooting video because of needing to change lenses in certain situations, recording audio is not always as reliable as what I was used to. That said, both cameras put out a great images when everything is done properly.
Bought a new EOS R in January 2023. Had it out on a rainy day, took it apart back in the car (removed the lens, opened the compartments and removed battery and SD card), to make sure there was no water anywhere. Just had to wipe a couple of drops off the lens barrel. It was working fine the next day. Couple days later, got Error Code 001 and had to send it to Canon for repair. Heard nothing for 3 weeks, then they said there was moisture damage, not covered by warranty, and it would cost a little over $800 to fix. That's $1000 after shipping and taxes. Supposedly, I'll get it back sometime later this week or next, over 2 months after sending it in. Can't say I'm impressed by the weather sealing or Canon service.
Sorry you had to go trough this, it was a tough one for sure. I used my EOS R many times in soft rain and didn't had an issue after that.

Canon EOS R or Canon R6 for Air Shows Speedway UK Photography ??
I currently own a canon r50 (I bought it like three months ago)and feel like it's not good enough for photography, should I replace it with an eos r even though it's 2024 now? I found one on the net and it’s about 32000NTD (988USD) which is a price that a high school student could afford (if I sell my r50)
I REALLY want to go with Canon but I'm waiting for more affordable lenses

@@VideoMakerTwistbeginners can use it but it's definitely a pro camera. You made it seem likes is a beginners camera. It's not. The 5D mkIV was, and still is, used by professionals everywhere. And the R is the mirrorless version of that camera with a lot of huge upgrades. Keep in mind it's the first of its kind and was meant 100% for professional shooters. And it was the camera meant for them to move to mirrorless canons. Which many did.
I like Canon. First canon camera was M50. But I use now Fuji:) I miss my canon.
Honestly, I would try Sony now, but I don’t have the money to invest in a new system. Maybe in the future.
I kept all my canon and bought a lot Fuji. Love the glass and size, hated the color.

Great video! I have a quesion, Im a beginner, and i want to choose Eos R or Eos R7, for wildlife and landscape photography, i do tego need video to be honest, and it will be my first good camera, so Im not sure if I should choose APS-C or full frame :s
For wildlife and landscape, as a beginner, I would choose an aps-c camera. It gets you closer to the subject for wildlife and the lenses are cheaper. The quality of aps-c cameras are really good now on mirrorless.

Do you think I should buy this? My friend just offered me his. Well maintained low shutter and two lens with batteries and etc for $500 because he just upgraded to the R5. But I was planning on buying the R5 myself out the door cash when my tax return comes late March.
Well, it depends what projects do you need it for. Is it for passion or client work?
@@VideoMakerTwist both started as passion for outdoors and cars. But since pandemic. I’ve been getting paid for car shoots and action events. Mostly the reason I was focusing on just going straight to the R5 that way cropping wouldn’t be a issue. And video would be stellar

So after 30 minutes the camera automatically stops recording video? Is there no way around this to get it to stay continuous indefinitely?
Yep. You'll need to restart the recording manually. It looks like the new Canon R6 mark II doesn't have this limitation, which is GREAT!

Thanks Ricky! Well, as I said in the video I set a timer on my watch or phone to 29 minutes, just to make sure I stop the recording in time and then press it again, haha. It was annoying in the beginning, but now I'm used to it. To be honest, now that the R6 mark II has just been released, I would upgrade to that one, because they got rid of the recording time limitation.

@Ricky Christian I use a remote controller so it's easier like this.
I am opened to test other brands, especially Sony. But I can't afford at the moment to buy one. I would need to invest in lenses as well. Maybe if Sony reaches out to me one day to test some products, I would be happy to collaborate.

Totally agree! However, the 1080p resolution on video is high quality, due to the ALL-Intra compression.
@@VideoMakerTwistThats absolutely true, and 1080p is enough most of the time! I just miss 10bit and true slow motion, and IBIS. Those are dealbreakers for me in videos.

Its really down to budget. Canon replaced it after 2 years. That says it all
In the same time, Sony was releasing new cameras at the same pace, so I think Canon needed to keep improving. And oh boy, I can't wait to test the new R6 mark II.
