If you're excited to paint rocks, but you don't understand where to place shadows, double check if you can sketch the same rocks with a line art and indicate where every plane is. Masterful artists like Jordan can paint it right out of their head, but if you don't have this much experience and a solid grasp of perspective, it might be too hard. Try sketching out the simplified rock forms on another layer on top of the silhouette, identify where your light is, then determine which planes are facing toward light and which are facing away from it in shadow. Just make sure not to rely on your line art to hold up the painting and turn it off or drastically drop its opacity as soon as possible. Hope this helps someone.
Your style was my first inspiration to get into concept art. I just love how when you look closely you can see the brush strokes and simple details. Great colors too. 👍😁
So happy that i found this channel couple weeks ago because these video's are just what i needed so thank you and big thumbs up for taking the time to teach the people!!!!!
this is a really good video tutorial on painting rocks. I like how your voice over matches what is happening in the video. too often on tutorials by others their voice over precedes what is happening so if one if following along in real time with the painting what they are saying doesn't jive with what is happening on video. then you have to back up slow down replay and watch paintshop to see whats going on
I've been feeling really down today, so I decided to try out doing art again after 2 years.. I thought maybe creating something would help me get rid of some brain fog and anxiousness that's been building up for a while, and your video tutorial was PERFECT!! It really helped encourage me to keep creating and feel better. Thank you so much for the video and I hope there's more to come!!!!
No one addresses the most challenging part in my opinion, which is how to evaluate where to place the shadow and light areas reliably and consistently to give a convincing 3D looking effect and to make them look nice regularly
Really useful tips, thank you so much 🙏. Would love to see a color and light video, I know it's huge topic, but like you mentioned in the video "when the sun is bright, shadows tend to be purlple or blue" that opened my eyes really much appreciated.
@Jordan Grimmer thank you for the brush. When I use it, it seems to have quite a lot of specks of texture in the strokes, unlike what I see in your vid. Any idea why?
also im confused for the actual coloring part did you have some special layer on so you could see the og sketch underneath or did you just make a new layer and were you just super precise
my problem is that I get bogged down by the complexity of photoshop, I have tried doing this kind of work in Artrage but it never turns out as good as something done in Adobe photoshop.
COOL ... my method is a little different. - I start with a silhouette, - I then use photobashing, masking and painting to complete the design. I'm no professional painter, so this method works best for me
I use a Wacom One tablet, one of the cheapest ones you can buy. I think you can still purchase them now. You don't need an expensive tablet to do artwork.

I really enjoyed this video, is it possible for you to go more in depth on how you use the different layer types in your work?
This was amazing, I learned so much! You should do one on trees! Thanks!

All of my rocks always look like folded laundry

You should do a video about your choice of colors some time.

whats your PC config? what monitor size?
Are you saying "full" opacity brush or "fill" opacity brush?
Can we get the brush anywhere else? Would rather not get a DA account
Havent uploaded here in a while. Hope everything’s alright

Does anybody know why he flips the canvas again and again
He does this to check the if the drawing looks good, if he doesn’t he won’t notice the mistakes
