A - ma - zing!!! The Mariinsky management have got it absolutely right with this pairing. This is no insipid Prince - Ilya Kuznetsov is even slightly amused by the Firebird's unavailing attempts to free herself - he is stronger than her, dynamic and even demonic! Kondaurova's Firebird is powerful, not-of-this-world, with those beautiful legs, stretched knees and wonderful jumps. It's a great interpretation from both of them. Bravo!!
Sensational! Katia is the best poster girl for the Mariinsky Theater for sure! In this dance she flys through the air with the greatest of ease! All the hard work over the years really shows that you only get what you sow! She has more than paid her dues in that she was willing to endure with the sweat and tears to stay on top of her profession! Good Luck! God Bless you Katia! Pierre.
I wonder if the tutu is like that to simulate flapping birds' wings like another commenter said, but it did distract me. Loved the dancing and expression, though. Best firebird I've seen.
In my limited experience, Firebird always has a softer, more flexible tutu than the standard platter that people tend to expect. I think it is to simulate wings but I'm not sure
Ilya Kuznetsov gives every role his unique slant - he is a very great dancer-actor. His characterization of the Prince is brilliant and has such depth - I see something new in it each time I watch it. It is the most multi-faceted interpretation I have ever seen of this role.

This characterization seems to be based directly off Nina Ananiashvili's (now artistic director of the State Ballet of Georgia). Fortunately there's a Nina A. performance from 2002 - shot on film - available on DVD as "Return of the Firebird". My favorite version. Ananiashvili is a better actor than most dancers in this part, but Kondaurova looks great as well.

Nino Ananiashvilii is stockier, than Ekaterina but her Firebird is pure perfection. This isn’t bad but Ananiashvilii’s firebird is like Zakharova’s swan - she IS the firebird! Her performance spoilt this work for me.

I felt like she needed to move just a tad bit faster, but gawdz why is her tutu like that? Were they trying to make it seem like a bird flapping it's wings? That had to have been annoying for her. Otherwise (applauds) splendid job mate
