- In a Global News exclusive, Canada hears for the first time from a veteran who was detained by the Taliban.
"Canadian Dave," as he's become known, is considered a hero for helping to free more than a hundred Afghans during the fall of Kabul in 2021.
It was upon return to Afghanistan last November - to help others escape - that he was captured.
Here, our Jeff Semple speaks with the now-free man.

We need some of this man in our hearts ❤right now now he was strong never gave up fighting for what he believed in ! He is amazing for what he did I would shake your hand with the utmost Respect thank you I will think of you as you put hope in my heart 😊
Brave and kind ❤
He looks pretty good for 77 days in captivity
you help many but no one will help you
It's too bad he wasn't a lesbian basketball player or he woulda been brought home asap.
Good thing Dave had a wife to care for him when he got home instead of him just being dropped off to be doing duties as if nothing at all went wrong duirng his yesterdays 'due to the Taliban. The Taliban who only takes responsiblity for another 1 added to their score. Their score in hopes of leveling up. Level up to where nobody knows.
So, when are you going back?
i was held by the taliban in 2003. i was released when they found out i was gay.
You would of had a flying lesson if they found out.
If ur gonna make up stories do a better job
I'm sure you were held by more than one Taliban....and you all shared in a release of some form. That said, perhaps it was these relationships that ensured your "final" release and then escape. I think your trolling.....so, no apologies here!
