please don't change anything, to suit some comments, like you say it's about the journey to get things done not a honda technical bulletin. I applaud your honesty and tenacity, you show everything warts and all, no over the top bravado, I can leave the sound up as there is no shouting, balling and swearing,, just an ordinary guy like the rest of us, and most of all THANKS for taking the time to share

Mustie1, I’ve been doing my own wrenching for over 40 years. I’ll be 54 this month and I have learned a valuable lesson from watching your videos. I have learned that this old dog is not to old to learn new tricks........I’ve told you this before, but you truly do have the GIFT OF TEACHING. I have called upon many of your videos to help me out whilst I am working on a project. Keep the videos coming my brother!

I have been watching your back catalogue during the lockdown. I attended motor vehicle engineering college, and was a mechanic in the armed forces UK. I love your content, the way you do things without a manual, discovering yourself is inspiring. Keep doing things your own way. I would think twice about splitting a bike casing and tackling a broken gear. Love watching you work. Keep it up!

I am the most easily frustrated, easily irritated, temper-losing mechanic wannabe, the absolute polar opposite of Mr. Mustie1. That said, I am having a bracelet made for myself with these four letters..."WWMD" which stand for "What Would Mustie Do?" That way I can glance down and reflect on this set of videos. As way of a compliment, I wish to one day be able to stand in your shoes, to have your intelligence, tenacity and failure to quit. I sincerely and humbly thank you for being such an inspiration.

Mustie, love all your videos mate! Your critics just don't get it even though you told all of us as clear as crystal...."They're not how to videos, I'm just wrenchin' in the garage learning how things work and how to fix them along with you guys" Keep 'em coming Mustie.....your way is so much more fun, informative and entertaining than half the "how to" videos on here! lol Dan.

I am old enough to remember when these Honda's were new - friends of mine use to have them. They were very good motorcycles. Not surprised they are still around. I had a new Honda XR-75 around that time, and was a very good motorcycle also. We use to run our bikes on the dirt. Brings back many great memories!

You should check for any ridge in the top of that bore before running new rings and measure your ring gap clearance up at the top of the bore. Normally you check in three places to see how oval the bore is, but I'm sure you probably have a pretty good bore to work with.

Looking forward to the results of the fruits of your labor just as you are . I know your in it for the pure enjoyment and have no problem commenting on your own work but all in all you do a fine job . If something doesn't work , it probably wasn't going to from the start . Your a no nonsense straight up guy
who is honest from the start . I'm sure that is why many view and subscribe as well as the interest in your find and fix thing. I know I appreciate it and do a little find and fix myself so your channel has got my interest and my subscribe . Take your time , enjoy because I know it will work again . You installed good parts made back when original parts were good quality and replacement parts today are questionable . I just got a good feeling about this rebuild . Thanks for a great series . Will be looking forward to great results but just enjoy it . I know that's why you do it .

Being an old air cooled VW and Harley guy, I was always taught to put the rings on the piston, then slowly by hand slide one ring at a time into the cylinder, leaving enough room to install the piston pin and keepers, keeping it simple!

haha love that you put the rag under the piston after doing the circlips. takes some balls installing those circlips without a rag under in case they fall. Nothing worse than losing a circlip in the cases and having to resplit the cases if you can't grab it with a magnet. Keep it up from us here in Chelmsford MA!

Good info, as I’m literally doing the same thing....and by literally I mean the exact same repair on the exact same year/model bike. It was given to me by someone who was tired of moving it around their shop.
It has low miles and is 100% complete but was in storage for 40 years and the motor was stuck from sitting. Cylinder can be honed, but the piston had a stuck ring(really seemed more like fused) and sadly was damaged as I tried(unsuccessfully) to remove the stuck ring. So, I got a new piston and rings for it. Reassembling now...so this video is on the money for me.

Usually if you have a black ring and a silver ring the black ring is oil ring silver is compression ring. The letters go to top because one or both have a belved edge. Ring gaps should be set per specs, improper gap arrangements will not let oil seep by the rings and not oil the rings properly. I'm just posting this for extra info for others, I enjoy your videos been watching them ALL every night for last month almost done with them all. Lol

I had 5 different HONDA 90's, trail and street,,,, The last one I had a lot of engine work done on it. A Herman & Collins full race cam w\cam and buttons. A spacer adding approx. 10 cc to the displacement bring it to approx 105cc (This was in 1966 memory is a little suspect, lol) removed charging system, it had to run off of the battery, It lasted a surprisingly long time. The rpm was ungodly, well over 20k. If I remember it had a Honda 250 carb. We changed the drive sprocket from 14 teeth to 12. The speedometer ran to 90mph if I remember, I could run above that speed for about an hour before the battery started to get weak.....My parents were very upset.... lol... It was that or the "Chopper" brought home one afternoon.... lol again....650 Triumph, oh how I wish I had it now....

Wow, you are a walking talking workshop Manual, its a good job I'm retired as I find myself watching hours and hours of your videos. The motor bike I passed my test a was on a 2nd world war dispatch riders Royal Enfield with a 350cc engine (happy days) this would be in 1959. I'm 83 years old and living all my life in England and the last motorbike I owned was a Honda 125cc and the best bike I ever had the only thing that failed was the coil or condenser (whatever) underneath the petrol tank as this used to get wet when it was raining and short out. My wife no longer fancies riding pillion any longer, so sadly its' driving around in a car, but my first love after my wife are motor bike bikes.
May your channel go from success to success.

Nice job. I use a stainless steel large hose clamp to compress my rings on small engines. Sometimes with a piece of thin aluminum flashing to help.

I did a new piston and ring & head rebuild on a xl125v (veradero v-twin) those smaller pistons are fiddly, and i found placing some masking tape over the top 2 ring recesses as i worked the oil control rings to the base of the piston crown, made it easier to stop the rings dropping into the other ring seats.
The chrome plated ring is the top ring and the black one is the 2nd ring installed with letters face up.
It was my first time replacing a piston and rings but all went well

Mustie Do not let the complainers get to you, Respond rather to those who have real questions or good comments. Believe me I get it but they will wear you down and those of us who appreciate you want to be able to interact.

Oh and I forgot that long M6 bolt too!

A good improvise for a ring compressor is a 1 inch wide piece of brass shim stock .0015 thick long enough to overlap the ends by 1 inch. Use a nylon tie wrap on the shim stock and pull it tight enough to press the rings into the piston. This works well on top of the piston or the bottom. Because the shim stock is brass there is little risk of scratching anything. Removal is easy just cut the tie wrap and pull it out. The shim stock comes out easily by pulling it with needle nose plyers.
