  • Hey everyone and welcome back!
Grab a cup of tea or coffee, this one's going to be long! 🍵
In today's video we're going to be focusing on some common portrait retouching mistakes that can often lead to 'over-retouching,' particularly on the skin.
On my channel I've posted countless portrait retouching tutorials for Photoshop, however I've rarely gone in-depth about a few aspects in particular that can really lead to an 'overdone' appearance. Hopefully this video will explain those aspects in a simple way, and can be a reference point for your future portrait retouching. 🙂

I'm a small makeup artist based in europe, small cause I'm not earning enough to make it a full time job, but I love makeup and also love making pictures or videos of it (products, swatches, eyes, models, everything), and I have some experience in editing, but not huge.
I worked on tfp projects with many photographers.
I once worked with a small local photographer whom I told that, in my opinion pictures that he did of our shoot are overedited and I didn't like how they look (I talked with a model and she also didn't like them at all, we never even posted them).
What he send in response had me dying on the floor.
He sent me super zoomed in closeup of the skin and told me that as I can see, there is SO much detail and skin texture.
Yes, cause you sent me mega zoom. When you look at it zoom out, it's just one big blur (like a bad filter).
He responded that this is how he does beauty pictures, this is how they are made, and that everybody does it, and it's a standard in the industry, and that he never had any client (normal regular people who pay for sensual photoshoots, not any company) or a person who did tfp with him, be dissatisfied with his editing and I'm the first person to ever say that to him.
(Maybe because no one is assertive enough to tell him or maybe cause regular people want to have such filtered pics, but still that doesn't have to mean they are good)
So all my hard work and expenses on the makeup and travel went for nothing, I deleted these pictures, cause I knew I wouldn't post them, cause they basically erased the purpose of my makeup.
I had so many bad experiences with tfp photoshoots, not getting any pictures, people being rude to me, and on that day my lines were crossed, and I promised myself that, I will never do tfp as a mua ever again (with an exception if I loved someones work too much to say no).
And I promised myself that I will learn and do pictures myself.
I am subscribed to you for years now, always enjoyed your content, but I started to intensively, with full focus mass watch almost all of your and other creators videos from that point on. What camera, what lens, what lighting to buy, and all of that.
I started to save money, my mom helped me too and we bought my first camera, couple of month later a lamp and a softbox.
For 5 months now I do my own pictures of my own makeup on models, and I'm happy to say they look quite professional!
Of course I have a looong way to go, my editing is evolving, I'm trying to make it as natual as possible, I experiment with light etc.
I really want to do my best to someday do pictures like yours, It's my favorite type of beauty pictures, I love them so much.
But I'm happy that my pictures are already so much better, then most of my tfp pictures that are all overedited and really unnatural. I'm really proud of myself that I achieved all of this without any paid lessons or courses, just intense and long research.
I don't plan to do it professionally, it's just my passion project and also my mua portfolio.
And I want you thank you so so much for all your videos. From how to position everything, what to look for in a gear, to editing videos like this one, that help me so much to understand what I do wrong, and how do I improve. Without them and others people videos, I wouldn't be able to do all of this at such a young age, with no money for expensive courses, that would be on top of all that gear, I had to save for to even get started.
So again thank you so much for all you do, you're one of the people who helped me changed my life, and fulfill my passion ❤

This is such a lovely comment, thank you so much for your kind words! I really loved that you shared your story.
It can be really difficult finding your feet in this industry, and all too often there are so many people that don't want to take constructive criticism at all! (It's especially frustrating if they're people you working with on unpaid projects.)
I do believe the good experiences make up for the bad, so keep going! There's so many speed bumps to get over with this kind of work, but it sounds like you're already well on your way to developing a really great portfolio. It also sounds like this is a real passion of yours, so always make sure you go back to what inspires you most. 🙂
I'm so glad that my videos have been able to help you out on your journey! 🥰

Nice to see retouching tips that focus on keeping a natural look. Do you have any experience using Macro lenses on a crop sensor? All i can find on TH-cam is examples of flower/insect photography. You mentioned the possibility of covering some non-Canon lenses and I for one am definitely interested

Thanks so much! 😊 I don't have too much experience with crop sensor & macro lenses, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for a future video! I'd really love to try out some new gear and give some thoughts 😁
