  • It's no secret that Don Dokken's voice has been terrible for several years now. It just seems to get worse and worse every year. And he does not seem to enjoy the shows. He looks bored, tired, and uninterested. If this is the case, why does Don continue to do live shows? Does he actually need the money? Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe.

He just doesn’t take care of himself. Or his voice. He hasn’t for years. look at Mickey Thomas. He’s in his early 70s, and he still sounds amazing. It’s because he takes care of himself.
Vince Neil is 61, and he doesn’t take care of myself, he sounds like shit too.
Tony Harnell, takes care of them self and he still sounds great. So does Michael Sweet, Even recently, Geoff Tate has been sounding really good!

If you spent your whole life singing, touring, writing and performing music and had a reasonably successful career in your genre, then having to give it up must hurt like hell; just imagine confronting that. It's what he's done his whole life, so regardless of monetary needs, he'll have to deal with the loss of his voice, the physical problems he has had and the fact that it look like his career is pretty much done. So, THAT is what is likely going on with Don Dokken. It's easy to say he needs to just pack it in, and I agree he should unless he can find a way to recover his voice, but I have sympathy for the bloke.

He was a producer before he was a singer. He should consider going back to producing or perhaps he could write songs for other groups. Music history is loaded with artists who wrote songs for others, even while they were still popular themselves. I'm saddened by the decline in his voice but one thing he should stop doing, and it MAY HELP him get his voice back, is to quit smoking especially since he battled cancer. Either way, I'm praying for him and wish him the best. 🤲

I have always considered myself a hardcore Dokken fan. Ever since "Tooth and Nail", I have bought every Dokken album. As a guitar player and a singer I have tried to model everything I have done musically to that. George was the one that made me practice and Don was the one that made me want to sing. Back in those days I had that kind of voice. That being said, I can understand the reality and frustration Don is feeling and probably has felt for some time. I hit that point much earlier in my life, but luckily I had a trade to fall back on. But it was still a hard dose of reality. I think about it every time I see a live show. I think to myself, " I remember when I could do that". But I agree with both sides that I am hearing. While it is depressing to watch someone you use to idolize who can't do it anymore, he might not have any other options. And yes he brings in George so he can sell tickets. I'm not trying to take anything away from Don, in the 80's and 90's he was the king if you ask me. But maybe he could get into producing and working in the studio rather than live performing. Just saying.

Your overdramatization is pure cheeze and disrespectful. If you really loved rock you wouldn't be trying to capitalize on Mr. DOKKEN's misfortune. We can all see for ourselfs what is going on and we don't need some drama queen to tell us in exxaggerated style. The real story is that MR. DOKKEN is a total hero, legend and warrior to go out in the midst of these struggles and I don't care if he's doing it for financial or personal reasons. Mr. DOKKEN IMO is one of the coolest guys in rock, ever that wrote some of the greatest rock songs and that worked hard to make it in a tough industry and was robbed by cirsumstannces of the fame he really deserved. I know there a lot of G. Lynch fawns out there and I respect his playing but, though he has matured was a total premadona ego freak to the point it broke Don's will to continue with him at the cusp of massive acceptance. The stories are all out there. Fronting a band well is the hardest job. Don's voice what great and original and wasn't a typical R.Plant copycat and he wrote great songs that people still want to hear and new people are picking up every day. G.Lynch probably would have gone nowhere if it wasn't for Don (in spite of his great skills) Don, the fact is, he is still around and that in itself is a blessing and shows the enduring qualityh of his music and his love for the business. On top of that I have seen some improvement in a more recent video. The fact is, you don't have to listen or go to his shows and making a video on this topic is fine but show some respect for a rock and roll legend that neverr got his full squeeze and is doing what he wants---- and BTW, DON said all the people on the net talking shit on him can "kiss my ass" and I agree. Please take this video down - it really makes me sick. From an OG DOKKEN fan from their first LP on vinyl.

as an aging singer... problem lies with these singers trying to sing the same "hit" songs year in and year out as they age. our voices change as we age and singing a song we wrote in 1983 compared to now is apples and oranges....Don Dokken is one of my biggest influences from back in the day. I do drink but never smoked... Don did, don't know if that took it's toll or not. he's still a legend and always will be, after my throat surgery my voice changed so drastically that I had to leave the band I played with at the time.. I could no longer sing certain songs. pushing 60 ...I no longer sing in the wild... just in my own house/truck/shower. retire with the dignity you deserve Don.

You know, there comes a time in everyone’s life when we can no longer do what may have come very easy for us in our youth. Singing is certainly one of those things. There are a few who can pull it off, and I do mean a few. You have your Sammie Hagar, Glen Hughes or Steven Tyler types out there but they are the exception to the rule - they are lucky.
I understand not wanting to leave something you have done your whole life but performing may not be in the cards anymore. I think with Don’s experience in the music business he would possibly make a really good producer or promoter, maybe a manager, I just think the time has come to leave this aspect of the business but his involvement doesn’t need to stop there. I wish him the best.

Its got to be a multitude of different reasons. As a singer myself, I know Don definitely doesn’t like the fact that he can’t sing them like back then. It probably makes him feel like a fraud, even if its not totally in his forward conscience, imposter syndrome has to be at least hitting a little. Then, to top it, he does have a lot of medical issues that would impair him even further. He probably still does love to perform and write, which is why he does that over anything else and moving on, but it’s likely frustrating that the best of his career’s success as far as recognition and financial happened almost 40 years ago.

I’m a huge Dokken fan. Just saw Dokken this year. Was a fan back in the day and still am. Absolutely love Don Dokken. Gotta remember, this is the guy that not only sung but wrote all those killer songs we grew up with!!
So what if he can’t do a lot of the physical stuff he used to. Most of us, including our heroes can’t do a lot of the things we did as kids cuz we ALL get older. Look, I’d still see Arnold Schwarzenegger if he were in town. Does he have same physique? No. Can he bench what he used to? No. Our heroes all get older, like we do. It shouldn’t diminish the love, respect, and admiration we have for them. If you love Dokken for the awesome tunes and memories he gave us all go and see him. It’s awesome just being in the same room with any hero you might love. If you’re there just to hear the same notes sung in the 80’s and 90’s go buy it on iTunes and stop bitching. Maybe join a gym and walk the walk, instead of being a hypocrite, holding the guy responsible for not physically performing like he did 30-40 years ago.

You missed a lot of my points. It's not about hitting the high notes. If he has to sing lower, that's fine. But even that sounds terrible because there is no melody, soul, or life in his voice anymore. He doesn't take care of himself and he's never taken care of his voice.

People critique Geoff Tate (63) for his inability to carry notes as he once used to while honoring Todd La Torre (48), who's many years younger, though still smokes. Age catches up if one is smoking. It will happen to Todd.

I saw Dokken (band called ' Don Dokken' ) back in '91, this was his first 'solo' tour ( Name dispute with Lynch, Pilson and Brown that legally resulted in having to add 'Don' in front of DOKKEN). Wouldn't you know that Don was suffering with laryngitis that night......he was all apologetic saying stuff like " sorry I have laryngitis but we just couldnt cancel on you guy's, had to come and rock you anyways", something to that effect. That band was AMAZING, everyone in it was well established ( Jon Norum ( Europe) Mikky Dee ( King Diamond) Peter Baltes ( Accept) and Billy White, who was unknown, but co- wrote half the album and was as good a lead guitarist as you could want. Don's voice was really bad that night, but he still , even with laryngitis, sounded better than he does now. Jon Norum and Peter Baltes were the saving grace that night concerning vocals, they stepped up and helped out alot. Norum ( as well as White) played VERY well, ( as always).

I still love live music but i'm only gonna go to concerts and buy DVD's from bands who put on a good show - bands such as Nightwish, Epica and Sabaton are my current favourites - these guys give 100% and don't act as if they're entitled to an audience due to past hits.

He’s got a guy on keyboard who will come in at the end of a phrase and sing harmony and then he takes over and takes the note into space. It’s sad for two reasons, 1) if In the crowd, I can actually sing better than Don Dokken then it’s clearly over for attending future shows for me and 2) as much as I want to bring a younger generation to go see something great, That reality is, this will not happen. In fact the exact opposite will occur. Don may not be calling quits but as for me it’s clearly time to give up the live shows until someone has already been born to step in with energy, vitality and a proper voice who can take over the front spot. Much love Don.

LOL I'm another HUGE Dokken fan from about '83. Mostly for me... it was about Lynch. But honestly.. that Band was awesome. Musically, on a different level than a lot of the 80s glam bands. Don Dokken doesn't have ANY self-awareness. Never did. And he's like a lot of these older Cats from the 80s. The Age of Excess. They just can't let go. They don't realize... it's over. It's done. And I'm not talking about every single one of them. A few of them can still do it. But others... who knows man. Can't let go. The ego is way to large to let go. And probably some of them do actually need the money, b'c they blew thru their cash.. and made bad business decisions. Others... probably not. Again.. who knows?

The back surgery he had was botched. He is in tons of pain. I watched one video where you could see the pain in his face. It was suppose to a lower back surgery (I've had 3 myself) but somehow the surgery screwed up a nerve in his neck that screwed up his arm. I can tell you from experience that the pain is what is causing the problem NOT the pain meds. As long as you're taking the meds. correctly without alcohol you'll do fine. If he was over medicating or mixing he wouldn't be standing. The amount of pain I've seen on his face tells me he isn't getting good pain meds. because doctors are to afraid to prescribe them.

I was a big Dokken fan back in the day when they released their iconic albums back in the '80s when Don's voice was great. I like Don, and I respect who Don is, but now his stage performance has been sub par I have to say. He tries, and that is very brave of him, and that's why I admire Don. The band is still there, but Don's voice isn't the way it used to be unfortunately. George Lynch still has the guitar riffs, and Jeff Pilson is a really great bass player, and vocalist, and poor Mick Brown, I do miss him playing the drums. I only wish him well. Sometimes you just have to hang it all up, and move on.

    • @c2jones
      @c2jones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No one 70 years old is going to sound "as they used to" 40 years ago in their prime, especially as vocal cords are biological organs, unlike instruments which are not. When your voice IS the instrument, few hold up well, close to four decades later.
Don has had multiple medical matters and surgeries. He's lucky to be able to do this at all.
I share utmost respect for Don and the Dokken legacy as you have mentioned and am equally concerned with Don's intentions with all this. I'm sure he sees Geoff Tate who has made a bit of a resurgence as well as Rob Halford and Sammy Hagar who have held up, though much more limited and says why not. But Don's voice just isn't there. He's a great producer and band developer. That's where he should be.

I loved Dokken back in the day because they were just a few degrees better than the typical '80s LA metal band. That being said, even then I felt like Don was always the literal weak link. I don't mean that I didn't like his voice, it's just that his voice always sounded a little weak. Singers like Dee Snider and Sebastian Bach had these pipes you could clearly hear were coated in asbestos but Don's voice always sounded a little "delicate" (for lack of a better word) compared to most of his contemporaries. Wish him the best but maybe it's time for him to move into management or production? Jon Bon Jovi had the same issues all the way back in the late '80s and we all know how his voice is now.

Plus I never looked at him as the weak link in that band, he’s one of the main reasons why I love Dokken. I love how his voice was smooth & melodic but still had some attitude. I think his voice was a lot more unique compared to Snider & Bach, and most of the other singers at that time. Unfortunately it was the chain-smoking and bourbon that killed Don’s voice, too much of that will eventually strip your vocal chords apart.
