Just ran across your channel a couple of days ago. New sub. I taught Biology for many years. I also used to fish and am now disabled. This channel helps scratch that itch. Sturgeon have remained basically unchanged for over 200 million years. You are extremely fortunate to catch such a monster. This is a remarkable video for sure.
Love it!! These incredible fish provide Anglers with an opportunity to catch a Freshwater fish bigger than themselves!! What a RARE opportunity!! The best part is that this is a sustainable fishery due to ALL Adult Sturgeon being released unharmed after a brief tug of war and hopefully a photo shoot with the Angler! Survival rates are nearly %100 if the fish is brought to hand quickly and effectively. My two personal best are 10'3" and another fish I recently got up to the leader but it was SO Big that I couldn't turn it into its back to control or measure it. Fishermen are known to exaggerate but In my families lives this fish was at least 12feet and over 450\500lbs! I touched the leader so it was a "caught fish" but I couldn't control this creature well enough to handle it safely, measure it, get a photo and let it go. I just had to let the big girl go and not worry about the "official measurements" for my own "ego"! I couldn't bear to see a big beautiful creature like this get injured or die at my hands, that would be heartbreaking!! So, she was released unharmed after a tug of war. She made the fish in this video look small which is nuts cuz this fish was 9' and probably 275lbs or so which is a HUGE fish in its own right. Just know that there are still a few absolute giants left out tgere
You are absolutely right. Sturgeons can grow to almost twice the size of this one, and weigh over 800 pounds. They also have very long lifespans. They can live to be 100 years old. Awesome fish!
That was something else. I could never catch a fish like that but watching it unfold, man verses beast was inspirational. The best part was watching it swim away to fight another day.

That’s actually where I caught my PB fish, massive steelhead! Pretty cool to see that area again! Used to see those giants washed up on shore every now and then. Great fishing on that river!
@@TyPigPatrol If I remember right it was like 36” and around 25lbs. Trolling, every pass caught a few! Was a great trip, definitely recommend targeting those sometime! I forgot to mention, one of the sturgeon I saw washed up was same size as our 18ft boat! That’s when I decided I wasn’t going swimming haha! I was 12 to be fair lol!

I've lived along the Columbia my entire life, have never managed to get one that big to the boat...have hooked a couple, but never "landed" one. Well done!
Watching Ty drifting in the water and holding on to that big sturgeon and then releasing that majestic fish was really cool. And still wearing his shades😎 the whole time!! What a great experience that must've been.
That is extra cool because I grew up in The Dalles , in the early 1970"s my Dad's friend reeled in a sturgeon as long as the 14 foot boat they where fishing in (fish stories) , I have had sturgeon swim up and check me out while swimming around the island just upstream of the marina , My dad worked at The Dalles Dam and we got to see VARY big sturgeon swim around the concrete structures for the new turbines in the off limits pool above the spillways , Way cool Ty.
Oh wow I had no idea you were coming to here to Oregon. Right on! Back in the early 1900s Sturgeon in the lower Columbia River were as large as 12-20' !!!! Now imagine that!
I fully recommend anybody that likes to fish, try this experience! I’ve done this type of fishing in British Columbia, on the Fraser river. Those fish make you work to catch them. The reward of the catch is more than worth it.

Awesome see ing you up in my parts the NW. Ive done some sturgeon fishing on the Columbia,10 sub size and 2 over sized in a day once. That one,that was a monster,never got one that big in. Getting to swim with it was a big plus.

At about 4 minutes in, the brilliant white top of 11,000' Mt. Hood is visible over one of those motors. It's one of the Pacific Northwest's many slumbering volcanoes. I have climbed it, but I have never caught a sturgeon. Good on ya, bro. Good on you!
