The black pot is resin pigment - it's used not only to colour the resin and therefore the colour of the fibreglass but also allows to see more clearly the spread of the resin when laying it on coloured fleece material / stretch material.
{continued} Despite coming to see the one video (I had to be sure I wasn't crazy and that someone else had done this technique), I stayed to watch many of your videos. Just awesome stuff, best I've seen in finish carpentry and lightyears better than stuff I've seen in car audio. Thanks again.
Wow the timing of this couldn't be better! Was just thinking about starting my first fibre glass project and I get an email from TH-cam suggesting this video!!
Yes, you need to use chop mat / mesh for strength. The fleece / fabric is used to make the shapes but it is not strong enough by it's self for any type of enclosure. Most will only use chop but it is actually better to use a combination of chop and mesh in alternating layers for the strongest enclosures. Chop is mainly used to build layers or add thickness and mesh will add strength because the fibers are weaved / intertwined for rigidity
Thank you. This is an answer I've needed for a long time. Always wondered what the purpose of fiberglass cloth was when I always see mat being used like 99.9% of the time... That being said, alternating layers would be a smart thing to do when fiberglassing things like fenders, bumpers, tailgate skins, tailgate spoiler caps, etc? Cause that's what I need to do for my vehicles.
Mark, I believe learning how to do this fiberglass stuff will take my future installs to another level. However, I'm super intimidated by it. It seems like it takes so much time and could easily be messed up. Hopefully, I can follow your vids and tackle this fear.
From Virginia.."Biggest Car Audio Myth," more stated amplifier wattage means more power.. Personally, I love this because I have shown folks who have stated 2000 watt amplifiers the internal workings of the amp only to find 20 gauge wire coming off the 4 awg input terminal to the main board..I've love to see 20 gauge wire handle that sort of amperage.
It is time consuming, but its fun, and it can lead to a lot more attractive results than other fabrication techniques. IF you are going to do it, might as well do it right, and take your time doing so. It really isnt as hard as you think, and since you have me to teach you, you can avoid all the mistakes that I made throughout the years.
This is still helpful for many but I finally got SMD Sunflash :) it's so much easier to use and cures fast, helps finish fiberglass installs alot faster :) thumbs up mark for taking the time to tell us what everyone else don't want to :) best channel ever man.
Your false wall app is probably the most meticulous car audio fab I've witnessed, amazing. I noticed you're using U.S. Composites. Are you in here in West Palm, I was under the impression that's their base? On the chance you are in South Florida, are you available to do do work locally? PS - A week of Solidworks training and partnering with a CNC shop (or your own small CNC) would probably double your productivity!
Biggest myth: sealed sounds better (more SQ) than ported or small woofers are punchier and big woofers are sloppier. I think the jar def has pigment in it. Love the video, especially the chart! My addition is the UV light cures resin without even a need for hardener. The hardener is chemical catalyst, but UV light is a high enough energy form of radiation that it can also catalyze the curing. It's one thing people don't use enough in fiberglassing. Maybe you had a UV bulb in the jar tho?
Of course sealed sounds better. If better is what you mean by more accurate. Because with ported you are creating secondary sound due to the tuned airspace also influencing the sound as a Helmholtz resonator to get more output.
To run power on the most direct point of entry to allow shortest length of run which usually is whichever side the battery location is. Thats actually the most direct way to set yourself up for failure. Its actually whichever side the harness for the vehicles rear accessory items and function items will run along. Usually the drivers side for domestic manufacturers and the passenger side for any of the foreign manufacturers that are located in right hand drive countries. Its not
One thing I notice you didn't mention about your resin: With typical store-bought resin as it cures it separates, with a waxy layer on the outside. This is great for a finish that remains smooth and non-sticky, but if you intend to add more layers they will have trouble sticking to each other. That's what "layup" resin is, it's a little more tacky (much like you Mark...j/k!), but will provide the strongest bond between layers. Biggest myth? "SQ" speaker wiring, and to a large extend RCAs.
Nice.. Im waiting on the Door build now.. I have to build up my door panels in my 855R soon. So, some tips can be useful for me. I've built a little with fiberglass/fleece before but want to learn more. :) So Post the film with door panels build.. :) // Micke from sweden.
What are your options on using core mat? I am incorporating my wheel well into my enclosure. I would lay a fee layers of chop mat then the core mat then another few layers on top of the core..
That container of black stuff looks like resin pigment. It helps you see how well the resin has been wet up. Also, do you use fiberglass cloth? And as far as the biggest car audio myth, I've seen sooo many kids that think the gain is a volume knob.
Great videos! For a larger fiberglass subwoofer enclosure (2cu ft per woofer) that is fiberglass on 3 larger sides, how many layers of 1.5oz chop mat should there be to provide reasonable stiffness? I do plan to add plenty of braces but this is my first fiberglass box and I'm trying not to have to build it twice.
Biggest myth is that some people thinks that if they added a power cap to their system their bass gonna be louder and the voltage would never drop....and that's the biggest myth that still confusing to some people...
Nope, I order from them and have it shipped, I have my own secrets about my profession, but I will tell you I use SolidWorks daily and have the right contacts that have access to laser, waterjet, cnc, etc. =) I have my own tricks for my builds, I just like sharing techniques that the common diy'er can accomplish.
Chad.... The mix matched sub sizes in a car is ok as long as they have their own enclosure its when you put them in the same enclosure that it causes problems
Ching Tu Madre, what gauge wire did you use for big 3? What gauge wire do you use for power wire and ground wire for amp? Where did you ground you amp and how did you connect it? And where did you ground your battery and engine during big 3? Have you upgraded your battery too?
It's pigment. You use it to clearly see air bubbles in the mat? I think? I do know it's pigment and it just turns the resin black. Do I get a prize now?
I often get emails asking what fiberglass materials are needed for a typical #caraudio #fiberglass job. This video covers the basics!
The black jar is "Pigment" ;)
The black pot is resin pigment - it's used not only to colour the resin and therefore the colour of the fibreglass but also allows to see more clearly the spread of the resin when laying it on coloured fleece material / stretch material.

Correct! thanks for watching!
Could be. :) thanks for watching
Yes, strength is key.
Working on it! thanks for watching!
You are welcome!
I know right! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for helping answer questions
So true man! I love a good amount of bass, but I want everything to be level! Gotta have the mids and highs too!
You are welcome, thank you for watching!
Thank you I appreciate it

It varies, curved areas are naturally stronger and require less than flat areas. Typical range is from 3-6 of 1.5 oz chopmat

Yeah they are the best right? I have 30 50 farads! I am BEAST
I took a look at it this morning, awesome work man! Door pods looks sweet. I forgot to like it, I will do so once I can get on facebook again!
Awesome video I am going to try to build a box this weekend . Thanks for posting these

You can if you want, but for the most part I leave things, it depends on the design. thanks for watching!

Seen people use just fabric and put resin on it do u have to use chop mat ?
Have to leave some new stuff for future videos, thanks for watching!

The biggest myth in car audio is everyone is impressed by your wicked demo collection of slowed and boosted TV game show theme songs.
Every woman I've had in my car loves the vibrating bass!
He is sending me some!
link to chart is broken for me. goes only to homepage. :(
Great vid. Thanks.
hey mark, im planing on building a t-liner box but im not sure how to lol so i was wondering if u are ever gona make a tutorial on one??
Why you using color pigment these time on the door pods and not on your amp rack Mark! Anyway I'm learn a lot from you man thanks.
Have you ever tried west systems fiberglass resin? It a pump system to measure out the resin and catalyst.
Do I need to use the chop mat for smaller jobs like tweeter pods on the A-pillars? I've heard u don't but I'm not sure. Great video!

Pigment! Close guess! Thanks for watching!
No problem bro, I know you so I can bro you!
When done putting on the resin over the fleece do you remove the support you had on in the first place to lay the fleece on?
Damnit you win
Thank you, I really appreciate it, let me know if you have any questions and thanks for watching!
Very informative
Great vid👍
GEL COAT!!
After I make my mold from the armrest how do I put it on the door panel it self do I use the whole door panel
Had to thumb this one up!

Mold relieve in the container?

great great great video
Are you sure? ;) Thanks for watching
adding fiberglass to strengthen a wooden subbox.

Nice, he actually made a full video from your comment. Just got done with that one before this one.
Is tue door pod video up yet. I cant seem to find it if it is.
Black jar are Colored pigments to see small holes after sanding
Yep! Also gives a good finished look and makes it easier to tell what part of the glass isn't laid up.
You right.
Biggest myth is that some people thinks that if they added a power cap to their system their bass gonna be louder and the voltage would never drop....and that's the biggest myth that still confusing to some people...
Right?
is that black jar pigment?
What's better to use when fiber glassing sub boxes in car, chop mat or cloth?
I'd like to know when cloth is the choice vs mat. Usually all I see is mat, but there has to be a reason for existence of the cloth
You mean to tell me my 5000 W MAX POWA AMP isn't any good!
You're amazing!
Big D "ya big dummy"
Where is the video discussing the use for pigments?
Liked and shared!

Biggest car audio myth: turning the gain up on an amp increases the total wattage going to the subwoofer
whats in the jar? Gel coat
I want a really light weight sub box for my camero can I just make is fully out of fiber glass ???? Its for one 8 inch sa in 4 th order
that's true a lot of the time, you get what you pay for. JL AUDIO > BOSS
How long should I wait between layers?
Chad.... The mix matched sub sizes in a car is ok as long as they have their own enclosure its when you put them in the same enclosure that it causes problems
What type of store would I be able to purchase the fiberglass mating at I buy somecat home depot but its a small piece only.
Where are the links?
Awesome! Bump!
how many layers would you make your door panels
ha HA!!! Nailed it!
Causes feedback. Not a myth. I've experienced it.
Pigment helps locate imperfections
The material in the container is color pigment
Ching Tu Madre, what gauge wire did you use for big 3? What gauge wire do you use for power wire and ground wire for amp? Where did you ground you amp and how did you connect it? And where did you ground your battery and engine during big 3? Have you upgraded your battery too?
It's a wax or whatever's its called to make the fiberglase come right off the tape after curing
It's pigment. You use it to clearly see air bubbles in the mat? I think? I do know it's pigment and it just turns the resin black. Do I get a prize now?
Can u tell me the material u r using..
I think it's mold release in the jar
The jar is Tat Ink so Mark can finally get that portrait of William Shatner touched up.
Where do you get brushes for $.1
NLUpgrades harbor freight
Is the black thing in the bottle oil
No, pigment. 👍
Black pigment? Good video man.
So i want to build a mold for my tablet to install in a dash of my suv so what would i need
tyrone garner Check out one of my more recent videos about How I made an Ipad dash. How to Make an Ipad Dash - CarAudioFabrication
I appreciate. It that help me alot when i get ready to build my custom dash piece
I don't know ;)
