    I'd like you to do a test and hide the SmartTag 2 in a busy area to see if any unknown Samsung phone nearby connects to it and sends you the location. This would help us to determine how long it takes for a lost item to be found using a SmartTag 2.

    • @Donny_B
      @Donny_B  ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I'd be curious to see that as well. We have them in our cars and it seems to update the location as soon as I open SmartThings. What I think I'm going to try next is, will it ping off of any Samsung device? Or is it just the flagships? I think I have some budget Samsungs in a drawer or box somewhere. There are soooo many different Samsung phones out there.
      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!

      My electric bike was stolen last Saturday from in front of the grocery store here in downtown Long Beach. I was in the store for exactly 10 minutes. The thief used an angle grinder to cut the 7mm thick square Abus chain, which likely only took 5 seconds to cut. I located my bike using the hidden Galaxy SmartTag Plus and found it 1 hour and 20 minutes after being stolen. I could've found it faster if I didn't have to flag someone down for a ride and then had to order Lyft after that to get home to use my own car to search for it. I have one in my car, on my keys, and one in each of two backpacks. I'll be adding a second hidden tracker to my bike soon. I've switched over to using Solum Smart Tag, since it's the same company that supplied Samsung and it's got the same functionality in a much smaller package. So it's much easier to hide.

    • @Donny_B
      @Donny_B  ปีที่แล้ว

      @thelockpickinglebowski633 such a bummer to go through that. Glad you got it back! Ultimately, the idea is to never have to use them. I have the tag plus on a few things. The redesign of the tag 2 makes it alot easier to hide and being that most companies that make "airtag pockets" in bags and clothing are made for airtag specifically, the galaxy tag and tag plus just doesn't fit. So far the tag2 has fit almost everywhere I put it.
      You would think with this technology being widely known that it would reduce the amount of theft. How did it go down when you approached to get your bike back?
      Also, I didn't know that Samsung didn't make these. Are the Solum tags as compatible with Galaxy?
      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

      It will ping off of any Galaxy devices in the area. Not real sure of the range but I do know it's pretty impressive. Maybe that could be another test??? She does have SmartThings installed on her Pixel but I am almost certain that would not matter. She has a SmartTag2 on her keys and is unable to track it using her Pixel 8 Pro and SmartThings, nor will it update the location of the tag .....until she passes a Galaxy device. So the distance initially that you were separated from the smarttag2 was bigger than 120meters(got this number from the specs). So how could it pinpoint the cemetary? Or did it pinpoint/connect to it when you were closer, in range?

      It uses low energy bluetooth to ping off of galaxy devices in the area. Lawren uses a Pixel, which does not update the tags location, so this was a pretty good example of real world use case. I didnt realize that I didnt have them until I stopped for a bathroom break halfway back to Ohio. I also didn't realize that my 2nd set of keys were in the lining of my purse. I'd been wondering where they were for a year thats why I bought the smart tag. I called my sister and told her that my keys were at her house. She couldn't find them. LOL 😂 My brother in law found the keys when he returned home from his trip. How does this product work locating misplaced luggage?

    • @Donny_B
      @Donny_B  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. The way they work is a protocol called LE Bluetooth or Low Energy Bluetooth. Everyone's phone (most everyone) is constantly sending out a Bluetooth signal. Well this device is designed to "see" the signal coming from Samsung Galaxy devices and then uses that devices location to report back to the owner of the Smart Tag that location...all in the background. The device owner cant even tell it has been pinged. Once you get within the vicinity of your tag, you are able to pin point exactly where it is by either an audible tone or using you camera. Super cool and convenient way to keep up with things you would hate to lose. Its pretty much a very affordable insurance. Hope this helps and thanks again for your time!

      Samsung really needs to make it so that UWB is part of the standard basic S phones of Samsung because you need to have the Samsung S20 Plus or Ultra or higher for precise finding (flip 2 or note 10 or higher as well) as I don't like large phones (+ and ultra is 2 big for one hand use)
      might get S ultra phone for second phone at some point (use a53 5g currently for video playback and backup hotspot)

      It can. There is an alert that can be turned on for when you arrive or leave it behind, but no way to set a precise distance to alert. Not real sure of what the distance is before it does notify you. But I do know it is not customizable. When using the find feature, it will show you precise distance as long as UWB is turned on.
      I'm actually working on a new video about the SmartTag2 and some other viable options. But unfortunately, the AR feature that allows you to use you camera is not working with the S24 Ultra. Hopefully this will be addressed in the next update and I'll be able to finish and publish the video.

    For this test to be real, the lady should have left her phone somewhere else before dropping the tag as HER OWN phone would have tracked the location of the tag. For it to be real world test it needs to connect to a strangers phone, this could take days or weeks in a remote location for a passer by with an Android Phone. When he opened the APP it INSTANTLY located the TAG as it had been connected to his wife's phone when she placed it.

      Depends how many phones are pinged on the way (if only same phone in range likely be 15 minutes intervals)
      samsung has 7 day history in the smart of things find app
      It's also Reliant that the people that have a Samsung phone nearby I've actually agreed to enable the offline finding network which is extremely unfortunate because on Apple when you set up an iPhone when you log into your Apple account by default I switches find my phone on and apple offline finding on
      Samsung does not do this when logging into Samsung account, after 1 to 2 days it pops up once (and only once) to ask if you wish to turn on offline finding if you dismiss that pop up offline finding is disabled until you go into 4 sub menus to find the offline finding switch, Samsung needs to change it so when you're logging into Samsung account offline finding is enabled by default
      it's all good and handy that Samsung has hundreds of millions of phones out in the wild when only about maybe 100,000 of them have the offline finding network enabled (most probably tech people who have gone out of there way to enable it) vs over 99% of iPhone and iPads have it enabled by default
      My recommendation is to use both the smartTag 2 and the airtag on the same object ( Pet, car, keys, luggage, expensive equipment like workman tools, TV and other portable but expensive items)
      buy a cheap iPhone or iPhone 11 (as it supports UWB > precise finding) for airtags
      Samsung you can get away with cheap Samsung phone but lacks any precise finding (AR/precise finding only works on samsung S20+ and ultra or flip 2 or note 10 or newer)
      Major downside with apple airtag it has no history function (only tells you where it was last reported so once found you need to goto its location right away and hopefully get close enough to it to make a connection)
      samsung has 7 day history function in the smart of things find app so you can see where it has been as well as where it currently was last reported

    hey, great video :) I was looking into buying one of these but my S20 Plus does not seem to support ultra wide banding.
    Does that basically mean I would not be able to retrieve a pin point location of the missing item when i open smartthings? I would get a 2 mile radius of its approximate location?
    Cheers

    • @Donny_B
      @Donny_B  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, the UWB didn't make it until the Note 20. It will really depend on how many devices are in the area and how close they are. Unfortunately with the S20 plus, it will only show the location of the devices it pings. Fortunately, that does give an approximate area that it is in and then you can use the ringer function to locate it precisely.

    My dears. I must also point out that Samsung has come a long way here, because it uses three systems: Ultra-wideband, Bluetooth and Google maps. If we find ourselves in the UWB coverage zone, everything is ready.... Bluetooth at the very end. And in a cemetery, you have to walk a few meters to catch a signal. In any town, it is no problem at all because it shows precisely right away. Let's not forget that the number of phones will increase, not decrease. After all, all devices will have the necessary functions to be able to stay on the market. And Samsung, if it wants to earn even more on this device, will definitely add the possibility to use all Android phones. This would be a crushing situation against Apple. For now, it is about competitors bickering with each other to stimulate the sales market. But as the old saying goes, "where two fight, the third (i.e. us - the customers) always wins." And I know one thing for sure, that of all the devices so far without a subscription, without a SIM card, etc., etc., Samsung currently wins. All the best!

    Great video, it was much fun to watch. I was running the Smart Tag alongside my older Smart Tag+ and noticed immediately that it is lacking accurate and frequent offline updates. Note that the tag is NOT! in power saving mode. Now I understand the long battery life which is simply achieved by the infrequent updates and long time gaps between them. I regret having bought the Tag 2 and cannot recommend it for the sole purpose of locating my item (bag, car, etc) fast and accurately. I managed to buy another Smart Tag+ but they are hard to find and cost now almost double.

    I will get 4 for 69 USD in Norway, a great deal. It is not in stock but will come next year.
    I wish they also were compatible with Apples find network. I think it's stupid to have different networks. Why not just one and open, compatible with all. But I'm a socialist.
    I have 3 of the gen 1 (without UWB). One I have taken apart and put in my wallet. I have a flat battery with solder tabs, and a speaker from a tollboot chip payment system. I don't recommend buying flat batteries from China from like Ali, they dont last long. But you can get a holder for cheap and buy locally a good battery.
    But also you can get bigger flat batteries from your country electronic shops with solder tabs or wires.
    It is also water proof, I used modified silicone conformal coating ( because I fly FPV on quads and areoplanes)
    Modifying this new one will be a little more tricky. I might not get the NFC antenna installed in my wallet. Might need to order a diy one. But the rest seems easy. I have seen teardown videos.
