Personally I didn't comprehend the argument. My assumption was that carbon capture was being touted as an energy source in itself. He was arguing that the gap between low efficiency hydrocarbon use and high efficiency hydrocarbon use can be bridged with sufficient (unlimited) federal dollars.
Reusable carbon may be on the horizon, but it doesn't contribute to the conversation of energy capacity, deployment, and grid reliability.
It was answering a different question entirely about net-zero policies.

Every choice presupposes an opportunity cost of choosing otherwise. The great thing about freedom in energy is that it allows a multiplicity of choices.

"It takes 2 years to get a data center up and running" while "it takes 10 years to get a natural gas plant up and running". That has got to leave anyone concerned about the grid.
AI which the world seems crazy about these days requires large data centers which require large amounts of power. Wind & solar can't possibly keep pace. It won't even come close. Combined the future demands for power with the power generation they plan to take offline and it's difficult not to be concerned. Carbon capture is a such bad idea and waste of money.

i think that energy efficiency in these plants could be greatly improved, there's probably a lot lost in the transportation of the coal/gas, maybe we should make smaller plants at the mining sites. Most improvements should be redirected into carbon capture. Maybe, on-premise alternative energy sources could be use to augment power requirements for carbon capture methods. Maybe the sole use case of alternatives should be in augmenting the power input of the carbon capture processes. Maybe we should look for energy mining/drilling sites near alternative energy pet project sites, and hydropower sites, and direct the energy of the alternative source to the mining/drilling/Power plants, so that the investment into these, often wasteful pet projects, is put to good use.

Carbon capture is a total parasite. It's also totally unnecessary.
Why is it not necessary? Because on a geological timescale we're currently in a dearth of co2. Cos is the gas of life, we need at least 200 ppm for life to continue.
