When I was 10, all I ever wanted to be was a professional bass fisherman. I would watch bass shows and fishing shows every Saturday morning. I remember watching you on TV and wanting nothing but that. Bass fishing was my passion when I was younger. Due to pretty rough growing up stuff with family I ended up falling out of bass fishing and moving away from Minnesota. Now I am 31 and I am going to chase that dream again. The same dream that my 10 year old self wanted while watching you fish in on TV. Thank you for inspiration so many years later.
After seeing this, i dont think ill ever look at you the same way. I used to think "going Ike" could be a bit over the top at times but now i see its all straight passion for doing what you love and not feeling like the best angler out there but because you love the sport you pour you all into it and when it all comes together, that all comes out at once. Man i respect your game and i appreciate you sharing your heart here. God bless.
I had a business for around 15 years from 22-37, but had to sell it because I am a leg amputee, and the heavy labor was starting to do damage. I'm 39 now. I was lucky that I did well enough, that I am now basically retired. I just do a little online retail business, and odd jobs, but mostly I just fish every day. 365/7days a week for 2 years now. Also single, with a daughter who I see several times a week. Anyway, I'm going for it. I'm going to give it my all, at least. I'm from NJ too. Basically, and not just this video, but you inspired me. And that's awesome, because I need a big goal again. I'm going crazy.
Mike didnt have enough time to get into it, but it would be eye opening for some ppl to actually see the struggles these pros had to endure before making it. Heck when it comes to any profession, there is always that nasty grind and struggle before you make it to the top. The hardest part would be to figure out how to make a living from fishing - Hotel (car)/ Gas, food, tolls, entry fees, boat/kayak, maintenance.. So unless you have sponsors you are working to pay the bills and fishing to get better and possibly win enough to get sponsors.
I’m 14 almost 15 been wanting to go pro sense 12. I’ve practiced almost every technique with bait casters not perfect at all of them but I have the drive. I’m gonna join a club and post on TH-cam soon I hope.
Folks that's why he is a Hall of Famer. He is always trying to teach others how to become a good fisherman or a pro, especially younger people but he still motivates us older folks with his enthusiasm. I predict he will win another classic be4 he retires. Taking bets.
Good answers and advise for any profession! Great to hear this. I recall a person in this sport on a youtube channel that answered this question to a parent of a person wanting to be a professional angler by saying get them in to a stick and ball sport instead. While i am sure he meant well because it is a tough sport to be in, i was like hey we need young blood to replace those who eventually move on and new bright minds to look to in the future. Yes you should be well rounded for the twists and turns life throws at you but don't lock down and stop trying untl it is really time.
This video means a lot to me Ike so I got the six foot six Ike delay rod to throw Square bills number one cuz it's a great rod the number to because it says never give up someday I'll be fishing alongside you guys
Hi Elijah, I fished with “Ike” when he was starting out, and I was in my 40’s. Look for my story online, I am known as the Bass Doctor, my name is Charles Stuart. I fished BFL (Redman back then) AFL, Foxwoods, Bassmasters, and the CFL. I was an angler from Europe and had to learn the techniques before I could even catch a bass.. If I can help you in any way, reach out to me via any of the websites, that carry my articles, or find me on FB.
The best advice is don’t be a bitch on the lake…nobody whines and complains at the lake more than pro fisherman …also learn how to be efficient at the boat ramp…most of these guys can’t back trailers…also don’t drive a hundred miles an hour on your way to your tournament…it’s unsafe…moral is be safe learn to drive and share the lake!
My friend thinks its all about being good at fishing and i watched tylersreelfishing and he said the same thing “you have to be good at more than fishing”
Hello my name is I’m 19 years old I always wanted to join the professional fishing since I was in school and I was younger when my dad was alive I been fishing 24/7 and slowly getting better
Fishing is my everything..sounds fishy but once I woke from a dream that I was fishing in and caught a solid 3 with an old bait I never threw before in a specific spot. So I thought I would duplicate what happened in the dream exactly after I managed to find the bait and wake the rest of the way. I Went directly to the spot and bam first cast. the fish's markings even looked the same as the dream. I may have a serious addiction
The problem I see with professional bass fishing is the money, and the large numbers of people who are out there trying to do it, very tough way to make a living.
I know an extremely talented and very God loving God fearing man who Is an unbelievably awesome fisher man he LOVES it and has his entire life!!! I would love to get the opportunity to witness him literally getting to live,LOVE, and most of all work doing what he is wholeheartedly driven by , committed to and loves and knows with an extreme passion!!!
that's all good and well that sounds great but the first thing you got to have is what everything else in this country is plenty of money because you ain't going to get sponsors and stuff if you ain't got the right boat truck hotels all that stuff so if you ain't got the money I come from the Poor Side of Town there's no way that I can make it up there
So true, my first thought also...money! After many years of asking pros about becoming pro I've figured out if you have the money and the time you can make it, that's the truth. All of these things Mike mentioned are true also but you have to have the money 1st!!
Almost gotta be an actor / over the top personality to be successful in professional fishing today , kind of disappointing in a way , but money pays the bills > .

It's been 3 months since this was posted. How's it going?
Me too. Good luck. Im coming up with a 10 year plan. I'll be 40 by then but the cool thing about fishing is that age doesn't really matter.
That's great, don't give up if you have the time to do so work at it everyday, it was my dream in 1999.
It’s been 2 years bro how’s it going!!?

How about a Business Management or Finance Degree?
It All ties into the Professional Fishing.
He forgot have a shit load of money to blow to be able to afford to lose over and over till you win

Is Berkley still building the fighting bugs?
I wanna go pro so bad, and all I do is fish, but I don't have a boat, and I'm trying to buy a truck so I don't know what to do
Very good boss

Lol KVD KVD KVD
You basically won't go pro. You'll be a consumer of bass goods and will pay out more than you ever take in.
That's a fact!
Mike you say you dont have massive amounts of talent. can you name some that do have massive amounts???
please dont just say KVD hahah :)
They didn’t have TH-cam
That is true but now it's essential to a tournament anglers marketing capabilities and growing long lasting relationships with sponsors
....And who is this chick "interviewing" IKE...SmH
So I don't see many ladies in the sport, is it doable for a talented female or is the gender bias gonna hold me back?
