Thanks for the demo, Mike. Looks good. Liked the contact with the 94 year old gentleman. Its a shame more senior hams don't try newer modes, they might enjoy them. 73 Cameron VK4YST
You made my day! I have been stressing about operator ability to figure out JS8Call. You just restored my faith :D 73 de Julian OH8STN ps, gonna share the heck out of this video. SO dfon't delete it :D
Well I'm glad I can give back to you for a change! It was actually pretty easy to figure out. Obviously I made some mistakes but this was literally the very first time I tried it. I saw your post with it shared too. Thanks a million!! And I won't delete it;) 73
I don’t know I won’t knock digital modes, whatever is fun for you have at it. Love your videos You and a few other TH-cam guys have got me into Pota and Sota and I’m loving it Keep it up
Awesome on the POTA/SOTA Kevin! I too was inspired by the videos that other hams have put out doing portable operations. It's humbling to know that the videos on my little youtube page have inspired others to get out and enjoy the fun. I'm not much of a digital guy myself but there are just so many facets of the hobby its hard not to delve into other modes and learn something new. You never know what your gonna get hihi! Thanks so much for watching and hope to catch you on the bands! 73
Yeah man, JS8CALL is pretty neat. FYI: it puts a ~ at the end of their transmission so you know they are done. The faint blue at the far right, just past 1800 is your contact. It doesn't goalpost it like FT8 does. Tune in this weekend for the QSO Party! 73 K8TSG
Faith in the Ham Radio Community restored!! Just when I thought I was the only one who muddled around until he figured it out, I see this video. Awesome. I'll have upgraded to General next month. Hope to make a contact with you then.
Thank you for this initial first impressions view of JS8call. This is my interest in amateur radio - relatively low power reliable communications. I'm hoping there will soon be a good Android app so I can use this on a tablet with a small 15W HF radio, three 18650 lithium cells and a resonant end fed dipole in the field, with a small and lightweight Power Film solar panel.
That's the thing about JS8CALL, you'll get the real story, not just their call letters. Pretty cool isn't it. Some of the guys are saying there will be a station on a sail boat soon . That will give a late night sailor something to do, right ? They take shifts. My thoughts were the guys on the Puerto Rico Hurricane aftermath, the guys sent there , they said they had no way to send messages, the nothing they had worked . This Would WORK !
I'd love to use it. Downloaded it but could never get it to communicate with my FT 991A . I setup WSJT-x with no problem, and that's after being away from ham radio 20 yrs . Right on with the Polish Food . Best italian food i ever has was made by my boss's mom , 100% polish lady !
Ever considered doing another JS8 Call video for possibly a Tech Tuesday thing? I'm just now getting into the hobby again after 10 + years on 10/6 m & haven't made a contact yet but being heard clear in Australia on JS8. Wow times have changed but feel it's a good topic for us technicians that possibly have been out of the hobby for years like myself to rehash again. Food for thought 🤷♂️. Thanks for all the great videos brother & keeping it real. Joe KB9QDI
KF5AFJ JS8 call gave me a interesting aside I see it and it fills a need. I now have to do some research on APRES to see what more I can do with it. Loved Julian's Video on the Pi and I have a G90 prepared with a Pi 4B 4Gig per Julian's guide using AARON Scripts. Now I need to see what each digital mode can really do for me. Thanks for the video. 73's John
Hi Mike thanks for making this video. We've got lots in common as I've been following Julian OH8STN for a while too, as well as running ft8call/js8call for a couple of months now. You made a few mistakes which is understandable given your experience of the mode and interface. Firstly you were messaging the 94 YO op in the beacon zone from 500-1000Hz. This is a portion of the band where stations tx there beacon info. If you look closely that portion has a grey line above the waterfall, 0-500 is reserved for one of the older modes (not sure which one its in the docs somewhere) as we are sharing the band. If you right click the station you're in QSO with there's an option to 'jump to their frequency offset. This will move your offset to the other station. The stars are there to highlight stations that you have established contact with, with by beacon ACK or QSO exchange. If you want to work split then this is possible but you should use directed messages. This puts your and their callsign in each message header, but uses more exchange cycles to send the message. Also wait until you see the lightening bolt at the end of an incoming message before replying. You cut off the old guy as he was still sending at least once. I hope this helps and you take this constructively. It's a bit of a steep learning curve now with all the features that have been added since the early versions. Hope to work you at some point but I live in a black hole for HF, so I will probably have to go /P. 73 old man 😉2E0UAW Andy
Also get yourself over to the JS8CALL Users group on Facebook. You'll find me there and loads of other operators sharing their JS8 mode experiences. 73s
Good stuff Andy, thanks for the info. Yeah there for sure is a bit to learn with this mode. I knew none of this stuff so thanks! I just kinda downloaded it and went with it hihi. Thanks for watching and 73.
made my first call yesterday yup i made many errors. but being that this mode is new i guess that is expected i sort of got the hang of it too. lots of ham that don't like to talk (sounds so ironic) might not like this mode. some intervention is needed. i like to talk, and my antenna restriction at the moment sucks big time. so this mode serves me well for now.
Nice video. I've been playing with JS8Call but not finding anyone else to contact. Seems like everyone is on FT8! So sad considering all the other great digital modes out there like this one and others that let hams actually have a conversation. Going to keep trying this and hopefully, will make more QSOs on it.
Yeah there's not nearly as much traffic on js8 as there is on ft8. I'm honestly not on it much either. I'm more of a signal report and move on kind of operator, but it's a good skillset to have when you need it.
Get an SDR radio and with it connected to your laptop or desktop computer they will work together and you can control the frequency of the radio with you computer .
Just saw this Video and QQ are you still playing with JS8CALL, I do a lot of FT8 and really enjoy it and this looks interesting for sure...Thanks 73 Vic KE8JWE
i have tried it and i don't like it. it is not very clear as to what is going on just could not get my head around it will stick to psk 31 for keyboard contacts. and as for ft8 it gets boring.
Remember, this is a low power mode [20 watts or less] and set your ALC out very low or your rig will suffer from the 100 percent duty cycle. The software is still in the development stages and getting better. Its a great low power mode that works really good in poor conditions. Join the JS8call group to keep up with the changes. de Walt N5EQY
Can you help me get set up? I am using an ICOM IC-7300 and an iMac. Currently, I am trying to figure out the MacOS shared memory instructions. I am not clear on exactly what to do. I am at the terminal screen and I have the sudo commands. Do I type each sudo command separately and hit ENTER or do I type all the sudo commands at once and hit ENTER?
It's pretty easy. Just copy and paste the lines in the terminal. I think I did them separately. You also need to reboot once you've run the commands. It's been a while though. The ReadMe file also tells you how to check if you did it right.
I work WSJT mode a lot and recently d/l and configured JS8 - but I haven't got a clue what's going on either! Someone needs to put together a 'nifty-guide' or "Now you have JS8 Configured - here's what you can do! "- I recently saw a video from the Creator of JS8 - Honestly - he doesn't have a clue on how to OPERATE it - he is a 'coder' ('propeller-head') not an operator - I think folks will reject this mode in favor of the older PSK31 - (at least we know how it works!) - Sorry JS8 - Big Fail - don't waste your time!
Is it keying up so much because of the length of what you are sending? At 1:44 the Send button on the far right is showing it will take 4 15 second transmissions to send your message, correct?
Reid Lanham that is correct. Depending on how many words you have it may be more or less. It’s using the 15 second intervals ft8 uses but one right after the other until the message is complete.
Hi Mike. Nice video. Would you be good enough to provide a link to the Mac version of the software? I do believe you said that you are running that on your Mac right? BTW I think we're practically Neighbors. I live in Wolverine Lake Village.
No prob Anthony, and yes we are close. I'm right on the West Bloomfield, Walled Lake, Commerce border. Heres the link. groups.io/g/js8call/wiki/Download-Links. You may need to join the group io to get it though.

I literally downloaded it and went with it. Which says a lot of good about the program being able to pretty much use it right out of the box. It is a lot of fun. A couple of people have left some helpful comments too. Thanks for watching and 73
well you dont need 30 watts !! wish you guys would read the release notes. Use no more than 20 or so watts. If you read the notes you would be able to answer your own questions.
People often confuse weak signal with low power. FT8/JS8 is NOT a low power or qrp mode. It is a WEAK SIGNAL mode. You may still have to use full power to get your weak signal through. Thanks for watching. 73
Sounds like you need to read the js8 documentation, it's kinda weird compared to other digital modes. I would not have made the video until I understood it's operation.

Someone showed me FT8 and it looks similar. I might try it to see what the buzz is all about. Nice demo here. Thanks!
this replaced ft8 they updated it and changed the name

You can move your settings by putting your cursor over the area you want to set your radio to
Do realize what this means? You can teach a old dog new tricks😀

I fired it up the other day and having worked JT65 and all the derivatives for the past 7 or so years I couldn't make head nor tail of it!
