I was trynna learn the real concept behind calorimetry through so many sites but this was the most descriptive and simple one. Appreciate it sir ☺️

nah we've got it sorted the negative sign just helps with the way he teaches us whether the reaction is exothermic (negative) and has less energy in the bonds hence the negative sign while exothermic is just the opposite :) thanks anyway for your help!

If you consider the system as isolated, so there is no loss to the outside, then you can write the heat as a sum of terms for the substances that transfer heat. Then, Q-water + Q-rxn = 0 and the sign of Q-water is determined by the sign of the temperature change.

wait i have an interesting question . in the example of coffee cup calorimeter the as the volume was not kept constant so how you can assume that all the energy of the reaction got into raising the temperture or the internal energy of the water.

wont the weight be heavier than the actual weight of water then because you weighed the cup AND the water?? also do we just ignore the heat absorbed by the coffee cup itself?

We only take the initial weight of the substance. I guess the coffee cup insulates the heat and returns it to the water...

Hi! Thanks for a wonderful video. This is really helping me for my IB final exams. Could you perhaps do a video on the practical elements of isobaric calorimetry, such as taking into account the errors in measurement (heating of the calorimeter etc.)? That would be very much appreciated. Thank you again. Greetings from Finland, Jonne

Calorimetry is used to determine the change in temperature of a mixture (solution) so we use the mass of the liquid when calculating the change in temperature.

    Ok so two styrofoam cups
One w a small hole on bottom & one w out
Filled first one up w liquid & double cupped it on top of the second one w out a hole ..
Then I woke up in the morning with the first cup balancing on top of the other one with the liquid transferred. Is this normal or paranormal Bc we watched a curse film the night it was double cupped
