I was somewhat older but share the sentiment. If you look around you’ll probably come to the same conclusion as me... This is (currently at least) the superior version.
not that anyone cares lol but i was 11 and I'm right with you bro. football was everything to me back then. not so much these days but nostalgia and the beauty of timeless music together is a true joy.
I was obsessed - _obsessed_ - with football when I was a teenager. I was addicted to _Football Italia_ on Channel 4 on a Sunday afternoon (any other Brits remember that?!) and formed a real attachment to an incredibly creative Juventus midfielder called Zinedine Zidane well before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon. Back when he had hair! I had never seen anyone like him - this unbelievably elegant balding Frenchman. I loved that man. France ‘98 was the culmination of years of adoration. I watched every single match. It was just amazing. And the final, where Zidane score two amazing goals and won France’s first World Cup! Sadly I doubt I’ll ever experience such highs again (I’m Scottish so fat chance of that from our national team lol). For me, everything came together perfectly in that World Cup. I remember rushing to the telly to turn on the BBC in time to hear the opening music. This music. I even bought the single (on cassette - them were the days!). It’s still one of the greatest pieces of music I’ve ever heard and I cannot thank enough whomever uploaded it!
Yes! The Italian league back then was the best in the world. Batistuta at both Fiorentina and Roma was a joy to see. My footballing idol back then. Fantastic years
France 98 I finished my GCSE's and just absorbed this world Cup, Zidane, batistuta, Bergkamp, Owen and of course in my opinion the greatest ever player, The Ronaldo. I remember the excitement having watched him tear up serie a and la liga. Messi and Christiano Ronaldo would not have survived till half time in the Brazil Holland semi final if they'd played for Brazil. For me this was the last proper world cup
This was beautiful - I was 18 and getting into football. Bringing this in as a theme was a stroke of genius. Made me not afraid to like classical music as a teenager which was generally frowned upon for people my age at the time.
I can’t agree more! I was _really_ obsessed with football in my youth and Zidane was my hero. The ‘98 World Cup was the culmination of everything I loved (I watched every. Single. Game.) and this piece of music was the icing on the cake. 1998 really was the most beautiful World Cup ever and (sadly) it’ll never be bettered for me.
I remember watching the World Cup shows on BBC in 98 and loving the short snatch of this they used. I recall thinking I must get hold of the full version of this tune. Now this was pre-google, almost pre-internet where I lived and no shops carried it, so it took some tracking down, but I finally got hold of it... ...And was rather disappointed by the full arrangement. It seems rushed and a little random and thrown together without a unifying focus. Yet the central idea of it is, as others have said, bursting with promise and could be one of the best ever choral versions of Faure's Pavane. It just needs some work. It needs someone to have another go at it, tidy it up, and improve the arrangement. I'd love to give it a go one day, time and circumstances permitting.

I was 10 years old when world cup 98 was on and loved this song. Delighted I've found it 22 years later

I was 10 too! It was a magical tournament. Proper memories from staying up to watch the evening games. To be that age again.
I was 14 and bought this CD with my pocket money 🙈 unreal tune!
I was 11 and can remember it all vividly, this music brings back a lot of memories.

Aw that’s ace, glad I wasn’t alone! 🙂
The best theme to the World Cup ever 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷👏👏👏👏👏

23 years later this has stuck with me!
Every major tournament I play this. It embodies the passion and desire of football
The BBC did some good stuff.
Such a good version. Respect
Just beautiful
The disappointment of the BBC's World Cup 2018 closing theme brought me here.
When you listen to classic fm and hear this and go..... Where do I remember this song from... Ahh football
One could argue that Nessun Dorma already has that honour. But this is a close second.
I want this played at the birth of my first child
The memories!
Jeeeze memory bank right there 💕
@skybatchelor Either this or the Pavarotti tune from Italia 90'
Ah now this takes you back.
13 years back. Where does the time go?
and now 20 years !
Now 22 years
@@antiilankedileli does that mean we're old? 😳

I actually enjoyed World Cup '94 more, not to say that '98 wasn't fantastic...
Reminds me of a summer of freedom after a horrible marriage!
brilliant, close second to bbc's argentina 1978 world cup coverage

Quality.
Recorded by the same lot as the equally hair-raising Champions League theme tune. I'd love to hear their version of Diamond Lights.
@wayzotoichi I remember that, holy shit! That was excellent.
This wonderful piece of music reminds me of Edward Scissorhands music by Danny Elfman!

@ryanlfc87 haha same man!
holy shit this is original from Xzibit - paperazzi :p
BBC should have just reused for Euro 2016
