It can be a little difficult untangling the strands of these powerful Southeast Asian civilizations, but the referred book has really run the gamut as it pertains to finding the individual wellsprings from which all of these nations, kingdoms, and empires have sprung. You will learn the origins of majestic realms such as Indonesia, Burma, and the Philippines.

      Laos people dont think anyone looks down at them. Vietnamese people dont have that insecurity. Cambodians know the World loves Angkor Wat. The Thais know they have Ayuthaya and Indonesians have Borobudur. They are know they are not under rated. So please, if you are very INSECURE do not drag the 9 other ASEAN countries to your level of insecurity. The Singaporeans do not think they are under rated and neither do the Malaysians. Even East Timor and Myanmar do not feel the need to beg for recognition.

    You've skipped one of the biggest and richest empire in SEA: the Sultanate of Melaka (Malacca) that fell to Portuguese invasion in 1511. The remains can still be seen in the state of Melaka, Malaysia today and the documentations can be traced even in China. The Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest strait in the world was given its name due to this kingdom control the strait in its heyday.
    Before Melaka, there's also several other older kingdomships such as Langkasuka, Kedah Tua and Kalantana.

      @@conho4898 Melaka (and by extension Malaysia) was colonized and occupied for nearly 450 years. So, unfortunately, most of the architectures have been demolished by the colonizers (Portuguese, Dutch and then British). And then they built their own buildings on the sites. It was said the the underneath the St Paul Church was a site of a mosque.
      However, what we can salvage, can be found in the Melaka Museum, built as a replica of Melaka Sultanate palace.
      There were also doumentations that can be found in China and Japan because Melaka was a trade centre, and maps from the Portuguese and Dutch especially. There could also be some in the British Museum.
      It's not easy to trace everything since they are dormant for hundreds of years.

      Many richest empire than Melaka in SEA
      An advanced and noble civilization is not just seen from trade. Advanced civilization produces high culture, both tangible and intangible. The rich Melaka Sultanate was only greedy for trade but neglected to develop art, architecture, literary works, city management, like other kingdoms. It's not surprising that Melaka easily fell to the Portuguese, and even then Melaka asked for help from Javanese, Minangkabau and Acehnese armies to make the Javanese Arquebus (now known as Istinggar), small cannons such as the Lela and Rentaka, and other experts. Melaka was not big, without the help of soldiers from the Orang Laut or Bajau tribes, they were converted to Islam and forced into Malay/Malay culture.

    For people who are not aware. The reason the topic is controversial for Cambodians and some Thais is because it has to do with identity politics. Essentially we have two (or more) versions of history. It goes back quite a bit, but the event that is the main point of contention is the death of Jayavarman IX and the ascension of Trasak Paem to the throne of Angkor. The point that is not contested is that Trasak Paem was a Khmer commoner before becoming king. Cambodians revere him as a legendary king. Thais on the other hand look on him with a degree of indifference if not scorn.
    - The Khmer version is that Jayavarman IX died in an accidental death at the hands of Trasak Paem, a humble farmer. With no suitable heirs, Trasak Paem was asked to ascend the throne in his place and married Jayavarman's daughter. There are mythical elements to the story giving him semi-divine origins and suitablilty for kingship.
    - The Thai version is that Jayavarmen IX was assassinated by Trasak Paem in a rebellion and Trasak Paem seized the throne.
    For Cambodians, the change from Jayavarman IX to Trasak Paem represents a change in dynasties, but a continuation of Khmer rulers.
    For Thais, there are added elements. To Thais, Jayavarman IX was the last of the Varman Dynasty who were ethnically Khom and related to Mon-Thais whether by origin or through marriage. Khmers were serfs or even slaves under the rule of Khom royals. So to Thais, Trasak Paem was a ursurper.
    Thais of Ayutthaya used this reasoning to secede from the Khom/Khmer Empire arguing that their alliance was with the Varman Dyanasty and did not recognize Trasak Paem's Dynasty. Khmer/Cambodians saw this as Thais rebelling against the Khmer Empire.
    So there's the debate whether Khom was the same people as Khmer or not. Cambodians would say they are the same and Cambodians are their descendants. Most Thais don't care enough to dispute this, but there are the more nationalistic ones who would assert that Khom were a different ethnic group, Khom being the upper class and Khmer being the lower class, not too dissimilar to the Normans ruling over Anglo-Saxons in Britain.
    This angered by Cambodians trying to claim Khmer-originated Thai culture would assert that Khom were the mastermind behind the building of Angkorian temples with the help of Indian architects and craftsmen, Khmer being used as only common laborers if not slaves. The French being unaware of this assumed there was only Khmer and attributed the Khom Empire incorrectly to Khmer. The French once remarked that the Khmer didn't seem capable of building Angkor Wat...
    That's the snippet of it. With things kicking off for the past few years with there seeming to be concerted efforts by Cambodian netizens to claim Khmers as being the originators of many iconic aspects of Thai culture, from claiming Ramakien/Khon masked dance as copied from ancient Khmer masked dance, that Thai Traditional dress was copied from ancient Khmer dress and Muaythai being derived from Cambodian Bokator and/or Kun Khmer.
    You'll see Cambodians calling Thailand "Thailand" because they believe Thais "stole" Khmer culture and lands.
    You'll see Thais calling Cambodians "Claimbodians" because Thais believe Cambodians are claiming to be the originators of everything Thai with no real evidence to back it up.

    • @CK-se3lk
      @CK-se3lk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I agree with Cambodians. First of all, Khom is a recently made up word by one researcher. Thais took a liking to this idea to differentiate Khom from Khmer which would give them the ability to prop themselves higher and erase Khmer history. It’s all propaganda, and many young Southeast Asian folks living in the west are realizing the truth. Thais can keep saying Khom all they want, but there is zero evidence of Khom. As for the culture, it all stems from Indianized Mon-Khmer origins. Most Cambodians love cultural exchange. The problem is when Thais deny the origin of the culture and look down on Cambodian people which causes them to clash back. Even “Fa Ngum” and Laos had been influenced by the Khmers, but we don’t see them arguing. Thais also love to make fun of Cambodians (Khmer Rouge genocide). I find it disgusting how they joke about death. Furthermore, not many people know that there were actually some political groups in Thailand that supported the Khmer Rouge. Thailand also granted China access through their lands to supply the KR. What better way to effectively “claim” another culture. By eliminating resistance, it was easier for Thailand to develop the culture and arts in the past years.

    How to defend South East Asia. Knowing that South East Asia specially the Philippines the lands of Ophir doesn't necessarily mean we will lax and lielow in defense, that's an attitude of complacent, with inferiority complex, foreign ally dependable attitude of historical conquest subject mentality, useless and growthless mindsets. Allies if ever less evil allies can be placed at the outer core while loyal and patriotic soldiers can be placed in the near inner core and the decision makers should distinguish between the internal sabotageurs and the home country defenders. The codes for weapons systems should have back up codes than the previous or present codes to prevent inside sabotage by inserting the unexpected weapons code during invaders attacks or internal show camouflaged attacks to distort the cyberattackers mindsets and keep them guessing as well as to render the modern tech system intruders irrelevant for the time being by creating layered weapons system encryptions. Establish a trade route bottleneck radars and sensors and tracking tech on both sides areas that can be used for enemy warship entrance and exit and plant undersea surface of sea bed submarine and other underwater ships very sensitive sensors that can distinguish between friend or foe ships, create a scheduled alternate warship sea patrols of South East Asian nations and monitor the passage of cargo ships and transport ships which could be a surprise missile launchers or missiles carrying ships operated remotely, use patrol drones with strong sensors designed to monitor and detect explosives and missiles hidden inside compartments of those passing trade ships, manufacture very long range torpedoes to destroy enemy undersea submarine base and serve as a stand off long range weapons against enemy missile firing warships, enemy submarines, and invasion forces tank and armoured carriers ships to keep them at bay, a stationary hidden torpedo launchers at the coasts that can be remotely operated with strict codes can be used as coastline defense deterrence, as well as long range cruise missiles and their launchers that can hit moving targets at sea as well as hypersonic missiles to wave off incoming warships with a very hard to intercept missiles coming at them while they're coming near the shores and coastlines making them easy prey for that, a South East Asian version of Iron Dome point defense missiles against enemy drones and enemy missiles and helicopters , of a 20 boxed launched smaller missiles Iron Dome style point defense and electronic warfare equipments while the mid range to longer range Surface to Air missiles be used against enemy jet fighters, enemy hypersonic missiles, enemy cruise missiles and anti radiation missiles, which means we need radars of the very high frequency radars type with the very low frequency radars always in tandem to be deployed in strategic places for high flying fighter jets and bombers detection and stealth fighter jets detection and terrain following fighter bombers detection, and skilled soldiers with Manpad launching shoulder fired short range Stingers Surface to Air missiles or it's versions to be used against enemy combat helicopters and low flying bombers, also needed are the shoulder fired Anti-Tank missiles in their launchers for enemy tanks ambush who managed to ferry their weapons in our lands those weapons are perfect in the tropical areas of the Philippines and other South East Asian forests. Having our own Satellites can be very important in battle because the foreign manufacturers won't have opportunity to instill something in there to turn those tech of our Satellites off, and have those Satellites orbit in alternate paths our country Philippines and other South East Asian countries, if ever can be modified to have jamming protection then the better. And as early as possible plan alternate route for trade if ever conflict erupts of course guard those trade routes. Understood. Let it be

    its too bad civilizational developement can be a comparison between the settled and the nomadic....the earlier a group settles, the more they innovate to adapt to that land. While nomads innovare less, like scavengers they follow wherever the wind blows towards more fertile land. In this conclusion, it explains why china was the most advanced in east asia, because they were the first to truly settle and build a civilization. This has a compounding effect over time, where islanders still wearing bushes and simple clothing, while the chinese already developed full garments and writing styles.

    • @fatmanslim4592
      @fatmanslim4592 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      once the nomadic threats were taken care of after the ming and qing dynasty, china thought they were the most advanced(which they were)...and had nothing left to worry about of fear from the outside. They became isolationist and kept to themselves mostly, while everyone else came to them for trade(tributary system). This worked four about 500 years till the europeans starting knocking on their doors. But china is now wide awake....back to reclaiming its throne in asia pacific.
