    Just finished watching "What tools do you need to start woodworking" then watched this one. I didn't get a chance to see all the Great Guitar Build Off videos last year but relaxing enjoying some today. I wish I had a mentor like you when I was starting in woodworking 50 years ago. Your method of describing things is very understandable and your processes are very methodical. I enjoyed watching you learn while undertaking the guitar build (specifically the veneer, and plugging and re-drilling the output jack - like I had to LOL) as I myself have had a baptism by fire in the last few years - having woodworking experience but not as much guitar building. I am finally making guitars I enjoy playing but it has taken a while. I cheered as you completed the electronics and they worked, and clapped as you played the guitar through the different pickup positions. I would definitely ROCK the sunburst guitar you built. I am glad there are people out there like you, Ben at Crimson, Matt and Chris at Texas Toast and so many others that are willing to share their knowledge and spend the time to bring great information and entertainment to a world hungry for a way to spend productive time. Thank you so much!!

    The fact that you could fix that was so impressive! Fixing mistakes is so challenging, since you’re trying to do something difficult, while (in my case anyway) simultaneously kicking myself for the f’up in the first place. I just completed a guitar, and while soldering the output jack, I touched the surface finish with the hot iron. Argh. Haven’t figured out how I can fix it yet... Beautiful work on that guitar!

    For what it’s worth, my ranking in terms of preference to own personally…
    Guns N Guitars - that headstock!! And nice wave!
    …tied with 3x3 Custom - super clean straightforward build. Nice shape and top!
    Crimson - outlandish awesome, but I’d never go on stage with it.
    Texas Toast - amazing look, but breaks your back.
    Know Your Gear - ? haven’t seen final, but I like the PRS shape and expect a great finish
    Big D - I don’t do Teles, nice finish, but I’m not into chevron flames either.
    Angove - popping grain!, but shape hmm. And pickguards don’t connect smoothly.
    Diresta - maybe with a smooth gloss finish and the original burnt look underneath. How heavy is that thing anyways?

  • @AngelicusImmortus
    @AngelicusImmortus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always think it’s a little bit of a cheat to have preprepared necks - fret work done etc - but that is a luthier’s “new”ish kinda work. The original luthiers weren’t using any kind of electrics - note Piano makers were called Piano Builders due to the sheer tension the woods had to take, the amount of work it took to get the thing strung etc it was like a building (all done by hand back in the day)
    Back to the point, the “competition” isn’t about electronics and is really based on what you do with “ the basics” you’ve got a vaguely formed lump of wood and you make it into a guitar.
    This one is cool with its natural spectacular look.
    You do make it look easy, and it isn’t!
    So, great job. Maybe the next time you do it, you could try adding inlays of other woods into the guitar; or just cut out a section through the entire body and replace it with a piece of wood that is a totally different kind of wood.
    It is a spectacular job and you do make it look easy. So it’s 9.5/10 for me, just because I’d have loved to see someone do something really unusual like putting in a really kinda bizarre idea to have an impact on the sound.

    Came back to say that this guitar gave me the kick to pick up guitar. I now own a tele that I swapped out my single coils for Gretch filtertrons, routed out the body for them, learned how to wire, and added a bigsby because I was inspired by this guitar. I have a strat on the way and later this summer will be building my own guitar from scratch, gonna try and make a telemaster!

  • @PaterF2

    FWIW: I LIKED the asymmetry in the veneer. Given the body, shape it worked and was visually interesting. However, for future experiments, you might consider getting together a collection of touch up pens or cans of stain that are pigmented in close approximation to your collection of raw woods. Using a piece of 1/4" birch or other white plywood, you can lay out your notions, score them in using a utility or hobby knife (do stop bleed through of the pigment) and work several different samples without committing your veneer stocks. You can also use the same technique to brainstorm marquetry ideas (should you be so inclined), again without committing your precious wood stocks. Great job - I would be proud & happy to have produced something of that quality. VERY well done!
    ALSO... best demo I have seen to date. Same riff/same chord across all the settings vs. a different riff or improv in each setting "cuz it sounds cooler." Listened to each setting a couple times and was able to compare apples and apples (I already KNOW the diff between a tele-twang finger riff and a hard picked neck/high gain rip) What you did is EXACTLY what I do when trying out a guitar (then I act the fool and try to play stuff WAAAAY over my head, but whatcha gonna do??)

      3x3Custom - Tamar, I play drums and piano/keyboards mainly (and sing), but I am trying to teach myself guitar. I’m now wondering, thanks to you, if I should try and make a drum kit? I had to sell mine when I had two mini strokes and had to retire from professional gigging. I used to proceeds to build myself a woodshop and some power tools. I inherited my late father’s hand tools (handed down to him) and just had to try woodworking.

    • @3x3CustomTamar
      @3x3CustomTamar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha I debated for like an hour what I should do first. My reasoning for not drilling the holes to connect the cavities first was bc I knew I was going to use a flush trim bit to clean up the veneer part of the cavity. I was scared the bearing would fall into one of the holes I drilled and it would ruin the whole guitar 😉

    So freaking awesome! I was blown away at the end when you could actually play the guitar as well. Me? I'm the idiot that started learning to play the coronet (bass trumpet) when I was 10, which has 3 keys. Later in life I wanted to learn something new, so I picked up the saxophone. Yeah, going from an instrument with 3 keys to one with 23 keys was a big step. I think it would have been easier to craft a saxophone out of wood than learn to play the saxophone LOL. Which reminds me, I need to get it to the shop and replace some pads, which may take away my excuses...at least with a leaky pad, I can blame the spooked goose sounding squeak on the leak instead of the musician (and I use that term loosely). Amazing work by the way. I could feel your fear each time you started to drill, and although off camera, I could feel you double and triple checking the level on the drill. You're so much better at this stuff than me. I just mounted a couple pieces of red oak to the wall with some additional decorative strips because the studs were nowhere near 16 inches on center. I mounted to the wall on the studs, drilled holes at the ends and used toggle bolts to pull the ends in as close to flush as possible. Sounds intelligent so far, until I start mounting the hardware to the oak and one of the two screws on each towel rack was directly over the toggle bolt head. Great planning, right? Then you turn around and do something like this. :0)

    Really nice looking result! And I actually love the "bodged veneer" part of the video; that kind of mistake and your reaction to it is so human and relatable. I think a lot of youtubers wouldn't have shown that but rather just put in some note when editing, along the lines of "at this point I noticed I'd mixed up two of the veneer pieces, so I routed them off and glued on some new ones, no worries!".
