Thanks. I actually clarified the blade stop as I closed the knife and pointed out where it makes contact. Yes, on the F3 it is an over travel for the lockbar. I haven't heard of any pivot or stop issues on any F3, but admittedly, I don't read a lot on the forums. I know if I ever have an issue, Dave will quickly take care of it. A buddy had a lockup issue, Dave shipped him a NEW knife before my friend shipped his back, so he was never without a knife. Awesome customer service from Dave.
Jim Skelton On something this expensive, customer service is important. And Ive heard of a lot of people having issues dealing with Rob at Hinderer. Knowing that Dave will make it right immediately might just push me over the edge toward the F3. Even though there is just something I love about the frame and beefiness of the XM. I dig em both! Great video.
FACT: If a person was to hard use these knives for 10 years (which is their intended design philosophy) As "boring" as people think washers are and "oh wow bearings flip so much bettter" the washers win for hard use and longevity. Bearings are not rockwell hardened to match the titanium scales that they glide against, in fact the bearings are much harder. Unless there is a secondary washer in place to take that rolling abrasion - the bearings will eat into the Ti liners over time. It's just a fact, and is already evident on many knives with bearings on Ti, you can literally feel the circular wear pattern with your fingernail after a short time even. Bearings are for pleasure/fondling, washers are for hard use and surface area contact. It's a simple truth regarding structural integrity, regardless of how cool a knife flips. Both great knives tho.
FACT: folders should not be used for so called "hard use" eventually EVERY single one will fail in some way. Use the proper tool for the correct job, as in if you want to do a hard use task use a fixed blade and save your folders for the more delicate cutting tasks. In that light bearings make a lot of sense, they improve the flipping action and improve smoothness overall. Also many manufacturers now put in bearings running on a steel washer (to prevent the wear you are talking about) increasing the longevity of knife.
Great vid Jim. Just finally got my F3 2 days ago. Love it. Opted for the Ti backspacer and diamond texture frame. This knife kicks the crap out of any XM I've had. I've had a few.
Great video. Just as a side note, the pivot of the F3 is not the stop pin. The stop pin is just internal with a grove milled out and a pin inserted. This allows the stop pin to not be seen. Cool comparison though!
That's one way to look at it, if you don't have both in-hand to compare. The F3 is similar, but as you can see... the similarity is really only limited to the Spanto grind, and Dave even grinds it differently. Not one other thing looks like the Hinderer. Not the handle shape, pivot, lockbar, jimping, standoffs or overall construction.
I am a Hinderer fan, I admit it. I have owned 3 total. I am down to an XM18 Sterile blade Slicer. I have to say that was a very unbiased, fair comparison. Even as a Hinderer fan I think that was well stated, informative, and interesting. I think when knives are this good it is Mercedes vs BMW. Both great, it comes down to personal preference. Thanks for posting.
Jim I have to ask I just recently got my my 2 hinderers one with a slicer grind and the other spanto question I have is, is your hinderer a custom? The 2 hinderers are my first mid-tech knives I love them both and they are both users. Now with the custom the price was 2800.00 I got to know besides Rick putting the edge on what else is the diffrence?
FWIW, I've had my Hinderer for about 6 months now, carry it every day, and it's a great flipper. It was fairly tough in the beginning, but it's noticeably smoother and much more 'flickable' right now.
Enjoy the videos so please don't take this as an insult, but I'm curious how much do you think your knife collection is worth? A ball-park. Can't help but notice you have quite a few high end blades.
Hinderer was the biggest disappointment of any knife I ever bought new. Failed a mild spine whack test. Plastic washers instead of bearings. My Curtiss was easily the biggest surprise and my best custom knife ever! And I've owned quite a few customs. Curtiss has the best service in the business. And as you pointed out; Hinderer, not so much.
I'm definitely going to have to grab one of these when Dave opens up his books again. I agree unless you're LEO or military, it's a no brainier on which wins based on value.
Mine came in yesterday but mine wasn't flipper friendly like yours Jim. My flipper was cut uneven, detent was so strong it made it hell to open and didn't flick out smooth, the hardest sticky lock up and the titanium jimping cut out on the lock bar was sharp. Thanks to David's excellent customer service, I was able to return the knife for a full refund. I own a southard sypderco flipper and I know exactly how to flip my knives. I just happen to get one of david curtiss F3 defects.
Nice video once again Jim, I enjoy your little knife talks. I will one day have an F3. Im also pestering Brad Blount about a Surge though(Not sure if your familiar) Also are you in line for any GTC's? Id love to see what you think of that.
$395 vs $500, a solid $100 difference. Now as mentioned... you'd have to add the $200 Ti scale to the XM to make it more equal in components making the F3 $100 less expensive.
@gremlock, I wouldn't call the F3 an imitation and neither should you. It is how ever dave's own interpretation and rendition on a tried and true field proven favorite in the knife/gun/tactical world. Not to mention that dave custom builds each knife. Its not fair at all to call his work imitation.
Thanks! I can only go off of the info Dave provides on his own website: "S.P.O.T. pivot system. Stop pin over travel. This pivot is locked into place with the stop pin on the lock side to prevent rotation and provides lock bar over travel protection."
I just went through the battle of buying a xm18 or a f3. I found a xm18 for 420 and hesitated just long enough to get an email from Dave for me to call him. I'm getting a f3 that may be similar to the others but he said he only made 2 like it. they are custom all the way. he's a cool guy and doesn't like the secondary market so offers a direct buy project. I am paying 150 more for it over the hindered and think I made the best decision. a knife is a tool. 500 bucks is not a lot for a tool that you use everyday and will last you longer than any dewalt or porter cable tool will. but I see why some think it's too much for a knife.
All covered in detail in the video :-) I paid $395 (with shipping) for my XM-18, but if you want full-Ti like the Curtiss is, you have to PRAY you can find a Hinderer Ti scale (yeah, good luck, they all get snatched up when he decides to make them) and they are $200 each. So now, that all-ti Hinderer is $595. $5 less than the Curtiss.
I maintain all of my knives, so blowing out grit from bearings isn't a big deal. At the price level we're talking about, the flipper should flip. And should do so smoothly and quickly. I sold both my Hinderers because the F3 is just that much better for me personally.
Good vid Jim, its 2nd time watching the vid cause I have a XM on the way & I am obsessing over Hinderer vids. Love both knives but unless you can buy straight from Hinderer you'ed be crazy not to buy the F3 instead. Thanks for the comparison.
my only gripe with the Curtiss is that on my 4" I've had to tighten the pivot a few times in the few weeks I've owned it. But I have done it with a Dime so a coin definitely fits the SPOT pivot.
Supposedly, the only thing custom about a custom XM is the grind. Special grind, wholly done by Rick himself. Although I did handle one a few weeks ago (new2knives had a killer Aggressor) that had a noticeably smoother action to it.
Mr. Curtiss, please add one more standoff, and offer some type of machining on the off scale Ti side, just for beauty!. Other than that, perfection...Hinderer does give U options on handle, which is cool as well.
Nice Video. But for me the Hinderer is the clear winner because it is the original. I can't see the dramatic differences between the shapes of both knives. If we are honest, they look VERY similar. And if we talk about the flipping action - my Gen 4 XM-18 3.5" flips absolutely perfect. It is nearly impossible to fail opening the knife. After breaking in, it is really not important how you push or pull the flipper. The blade just opens every time.
hey i am trying to get my hands on an xm 18 3.5 spanto gen 4, and i was wondering how i can order directly from rick hinderer. i would greatly appreciate the help. also, how long was the wait time?
In the initial run, first made there were 3 styles of sculpting to choose from. Now he has several. He even did a special run for The Fort. And there's no need for another standoff actually, you will never flex that thick slab of titanium
Thanks. Both mine flipped better than the average Hinderer, but still nothing to write home about. Any flipper that requires you to learn how to flip it... ain't a flipper. Flip an F3, and RJ Martin, a Mayo, a Southard custom, Shirogorov, Bodega... and so on... there's no comparison whatsoever.
Great video again Jim! Fyi We all know Rick Hinderer is brilliant and added lots in knife community but "Spanto" isnt one of them as it used in central and east asia for eons in blades and swords.
personally, I love my XM... worth every cent... but I got it direct as a military member... just wish I could get the more limited XM with DLC coating... and bronzed titanium locking side...
Like the flipping action on the f3 much more than the hinderer. My full TI hellfire has good flipping action but the regular xm-18 3.5 inch doesnt do it for me.. The curtiss is awesome!
The F3 could be one of the iconic folders. Unfortunately, the pivot & pocket clip looks like someone took a dump on a T-bone steak. Personally, I think Hinderer should have continued using thumb studs for deployment.
Just the pivot on the F3 is worth an extra hundo to me. Plus IKBS. No brainer to me. Unless were talkin custom grail knife than yea, I want a Custom Hinderer. But if were talking user knife than F3 is a better value IMO.

Idk why but i love a late lock up... oooo ur a bad lock up. (NOT SAYING LATE LOCK UP IS BAD LOCK UP). Cant wait to get my F3, I was one of the guys that's invoice was lost. i got two months not bad i am on a Jake Hoback wait list for a year.
I am calling for a national protest day for Spidies. We need a Ti Para...Take to the streets today, write your congress person, go on a hunger strike....NOW...

Cool comparison though!
You have the best attitude when it comes to high end knives
That's one way to look at it, if you don't have both in-hand to compare. No doubt, the Curtis.
I love the Spot Pivot, the Pocket Clip and contrasting finish.
I'll be glad when he reopens the books!
I love how the knife felt and looked but had to let it go. I have much respect for David's work though. Great video comparison Jim!

I like the F3 better. Flips better and I like the pivot/LBS combo. Great vid J.
Hey Jim, how well to the xm-18's flick open with the thumb stud? I prefer that opening method myself.
+PJ Halpen They work fine that way, no worries
Nice video once again Jim, I enjoy your little knife talks. I will one day have an F3. Im also pestering Brad Blount about a Surge though(Not sure if your familiar) Also are you in line for any GTC's? Id love to see what you think of that.

what size hands do you have? 10? 11?

I prefer the hinderer. I want a xm-18 3" hellfire grind. That's my dream knife.
Andrew, you can only get one from rick direct if you are Leo, emt, fire fighter, or Active military.
hey i am trying to get my hands on an xm 18 3.5 spanto gen 4, and i was wondering how i can order directly from rick hinderer. i would greatly appreciate the help. also, how long was the wait time?

"Thumb studs " are external stop pins
did you get my video response ?
Ya know, this was a very well done video, I really injured the view, thx
Hinderer is like the AR-15 of knives for all the different after market accessories you can get.
I want a GTC, but can;t get an order in as we all know, and when you see one pop up somewhere... WOOOOO the markup!!
Hmmmm, I guess I'm wrong and the stop pin does lock into the pivot. My bad, thats a very unique system.
Cool knife though!
Great video again Jim!
Fyi We all know Rick Hinderer is brilliant and added lots in knife community but "Spanto" isnt one of them as it used in central and east asia for eons in blades and swords.

Thanks very much!
how much is the Curtiss ?. I paid $385.00 for my
I love F3 👌👍
Just the pivot on the F3 is worth an extra hundo to me. Plus IKBS. No brainer to me. Unless were talkin custom grail knife than yea, I want a Custom Hinderer. But if were talking user knife than F3 is a better value IMO.
The Curtiss F3 is the better knife in my opinion. I love my F3!
September is when Dave will reopen his books. And if you contact him, he will most likely put you on a reserve list for when he opens up again! Also check forthenrycustomknives because they are getting exclusive F3 models.
How do I get a knife from rick without a secondary market.
Join Hinder's FB page and try your luck on his quarterly "Flash Sales" (they go for dealers prices), or join a forum like USN, etc. where you'll find some nice prices at times.
And so it begins
you need to be mil, leo, or first responder to order directly from hinderer.
otherwise you'll have to pay the 2nd market price. dealers sell then brand new between 700-900$
I had a curtis and its no better and allot more money.I spent 600$ on the tiny curtis.hinderers are not hard to find anymore so you can get one for a good price.xms are not ment to be true flippers .rick ment for it to be open 3 ways.now if you have a real tight detent you realy cant use the thumbstuds.pluss bearings can get gunked up.the xm is a workhorse not pocket jewellery like the curtis.
How much is a f3.
i'm not pretending like it's the best flipper out there, I have no trouble believing that there are way better flippers out there, you have quite a collection and I take your word for it, but then again, i'm not a flipper guy like you, I would probably never buy a knife because it flips nice. for me the knife itself is more important and I feel that as a tool the hinderers excel! I wouldn't dare beating on a custom southard, or q36. also i dont like the look of the f3, but thats just me :p!
the Hinderer is nice (over-hyped).....but the Curtiss.....is freakin badass!
Funny Hinderer sells all parts for the knife now. Very customizable
At about the 20:09 mark you mention Rick H does final edge on "some knives", but not all... actually, if you watch the Monkey Edge interview with Rick he states,"...every knife that comes out of here, I sharpen... I have to sharpen." So it would seem he does indeed sharpen them all, production and custom. Still though, your point about the fact that Rick doesn't make and/or assemble each knife entirely himself is certainly true. He has a crew/employees for sure.
Perso, Hinderer win. OK its iconic and full of hype. But just look on what the f3 is based on, also I would always prefer a simple pivot over a complex pivot with ball bering ( correct me if im wrong but when i heart ball bering i always think that over time dust and small particles will jam the thing). Also i think a simple pivot flipper is better. Sure you throw bering in yout pivot and its super fast and smooth, but all knife that got ball bearing are fast and smooth.
hehe, well thanks man, I appreciate that!
cheapest most of us can fin d the Hinderer is $650-ish but most only find the MX18 in the $750 range. F3 if you can find it anywhere but cheatBay still cost less
As a state certified EMR, I can buy directly from Rick... at $385. I'm sure I can't find an F3 for retail.
Jim, thanks. $400.00 is my current limit to spend on one knive. If I had your hand I'd throw mine in..lol
If you put the F3 blade and flipping ability in the XM handle it would be the best looking flipper out there!
It's called the ZT560
TacRatt60 did the zt get discontinued?
I own both, if I could keep only one I would keep the F3. Way better flipper, and IMO a better blade steel.
I like the Curtiss F3 more.
I really hate how Curtis sharpened all up on the plunge grind, reminds me of a cryo. The Hinderer will be able to be sharpened for life before getting on the plunge.
hey I really like your reviews and knives, but for this one I wanna hit you sooo hard :p
Hinderers DO flip! I have had an xm-24(which I sold for being to big) and currently still have a 3,5"... they flip perfectly without needing a wrist flick. you just have to activate the flipper differently... there are a couple of videos on yt on how to flip it, check it out :p
You can't put a lanyard on the F3, the blade edge would cut into your lanyard due to the blade edge coming so close to the spacer.
Hinderer not selling you of all people a screw is just plan stupid... And guess what guess your knife has been completly knocked off long ago so hanging on to screws just isnt cutting it... F3 is in a class WAY above the hinderer.
Great reviews!
I found more advantages, so I sold both my XM-24 and XM-18 and now have a 3.5" and a 4" F3...
The fact that Hinderer won't sell you replacement parts is another strike against buying their product. Not everyone can send the knife in,there are people that live outside the Us.
You should do a Ti-Damascus scale :D
I feel like I'm listening to Walter White talking about blades lol. Awesome comparison.
Didn't he day his Curtiss was gonna be a user?
So the XM runs $385, and the F3 $500? Direct, not forum sales.
I like you skelton you make good videos pal.
So a custom for $100 less...Gonna try one out thanks
Idk why but i love a late lock up... oooo ur a bad lock up.
(NOT SAYING LATE LOCK UP IS BAD LOCK UP). Cant wait to get my F3, I was one of the guys that's invoice was lost. i got two months not bad i am on a Jake Hoback wait list for a year.
lol, thanks!
As usual....great vid Jim!
That Curtis is giving me a bit of a chubby!!
Wow the Hinderer Xm 18 is $1800.00! I am comfortable but I would rather by a super nice AR 15. That can really defend me!
XM-18s (3.5") go for $600-$700 on the secondary market. Whoever is selling it for $1800 is out of their goddamn mind.
i go with the F3
The F3 is cool but the pivot is hideous
Brandon Sellers to each their own. I like it
You have to be LEO/Military to order direct.
I don't know what that means... but I wear a size large glove
F3 is better looking in my opinion , would love to ave that knife
The Curtis if you want pocket jewelry/ fidget knife. The hinderer if you want a working mans knife.
YoungBeezy That doesn’t add up. They’re made pretty much to the same specs. The Hinderer isn’t made any more tough or resilient than the Curtiss.
I am calling for a national protest day for Spidies. We need a Ti Para...Take to the streets today, write your congress person, go on a hunger strike....NOW...
Wow I love that F3 the hinderer i like but dont love
