How the Plains Dairy Milk Jug Gets its Shape

  • This short video shows how the plastic is dropped in to the mold, then blown to shape. As it cools, it hardens, then is pushed along the conveyor to the press, that cuts the excess plastic off. During this process, there is also a pin hole leak detector, that blows air into the jug and kicks it out if there is a defect in the jug.

Literally came to see why the handle had a seam. Cool video, thanks for sharing! I wish there was animation or something that showed what happened inside the mold...

Two years late, but it works on the same principal as glass blowing. The pin at the top of the mold is a blow pin, which shoots air and blows the plastic to the edges of the mold.

So farmers ship milk to bottling facility? How do you receive bulk plastic: as partial blanks, or just pellets? How many jugs per day do you produce? How much bulk plastic do you consume per day? I have always wondered if the jugs were shipped empty.

Yes, farmers ship raw milk to dairy plants where it's pasturized.
Jugs made with these machines are made from tiny pellets being melted together and extruded into the mold as you see in the video.
The number of jugs would vary from plant to plant. Not all plants make the same products. Some make multiple so they need enough to cover all the different products they run.
Hundreds of jugs are produced per day. Some are for product now, some are reserved for later so if there is an excess of issues regarding the blowmold machines or the fillers that dispense the product into the jugs etc.
Many many hundreds of pounds per day. It just depends on the product being run at the facility.
Not many (if any) jugs are shipped empty. That depends on what the company in question is making.

@@robinfarrar3493 Excellent info. I know about container production; I just could not imagine a semi-load of empty milk jugs, so your explanation means a lot. So dairy plants must have jug mfr-ing machines and the skills to run them, on top of all the other.

When we make the jugs we use pellets and also regrind, the extra plastic that is trimmed off gets re-used.in 8hr shift we can make anywhere from 25 to 30 thousand
