I asked my Japanese sensei if the purpose was to protect the other guy. He said no. It’s to protect your knuckles 🤪. The knuckles knarled from years of makiwara training.
That maybe true but if you did full contact you may not go to work the next day. Sparring like this in the dojo leads to a lot of injuries. For true karate purposes, you do not have protective equipment or rules in a real life application of karate-jutsu.
I adore this well ballanced Kamae bewteen defence and offence of the Traditional J.K.A. competitors as compared with the artificial Kamae of the W.K.F. competitors. This is a martial art with no concessions towards spectacle.
Techniques need to cross a power threshold in JKA kumite, requiring a more rooted stance when executing them. Sport karate - namely WKF - plays out almost like fencing. The jump to telegraph less movement and be able to burst out at full speed to get the touch of the glove. Watch some Kendo vs Olympics fencing, the difference is similar to traditional kumite and wkf kumite
I think some of you are missing my point. And I'm not being facetious. I think it would be interesting to see how each of the different arts would fair in in their strategies of distance, timing, and the application of control tactics. How would the Japanese and or Okinawan or Kyokushin deal with the many different kicks of the Korean arts. Hope to hear some positive feedback.
Both are kick punch arts (sport), they should show how each would fight the other. You see this open point competition ( sport), but it would display how each would strategize the other art. I’m talking about high level artists not the everyday monthly tourneys. I’m not being a smart ass I have over 50 years in my art of Shotokan and I know what it is like to fight with other styles. All are to be respected.
Kyokushin is great but Shotokan is about distancing management, precision and power. So you don't need to expose yourself to a crazy exchange just to make the crowd happy, it is not the point of Shotokan competition. You have to be patient, find the right timing to connect a powerfull blow that is enough to finish the fight. In competition, we have to control the strikes to the head to avoid brain damage but the judges decides if the technique was good enough to score a Ippon. Ippon in JKA represents Knockout. For untrained eyes it can be confuse but for experienced praticioners is possible to indentify a controlled technique that could end the fight if it was delivered with the intention of knockout.
@@Philmoscowitz It is called Kickboxing. We can fight in Kickboxing If we want, don't need to change Karate tournament rules, just add some boxing cross training.
@@TiagoPortas I disagree. If you mostly train for tournaments where the referee breaks up the fight after every point, then that's the situation you're training for, not for an actual fight. Now of course MMA and Kick Boxing style tournaments are not real fights, but they're much closer to them than what we have in Karate today.
@@Philmoscowitz that's why i said to add some boxing cross training. You think in Karate we train with a referee in the dojo stoping the sparring all the time? This point sparring is really silly. It also breeds bad habits that won't serve you well in a real fight. The JKA should adopt the MMA model of timed rounds. They could still keep this point sparring system as a stepping stone to full contact.
Those guys are hitting and it’s obvious a point is not awarded unless it is capable of causing damage and did in this contest, I disagree of breeding any bad habits, it actually causes supreme defense in order not to get hit have a point given to the opponent, obviously you have never entered the ring

That is the real KARATE. We love to see this.
Arigato, Nihon Karatedo Kyokai. That's the karate I had been striving for. Power (precision and speed) and control.
Control😂

Superb! Oss!! Excellent final.
I love how children in background cheer and support them like a Action Super hero!!!!
Best Karate fighting Oldschool as in my old young times

Well done: BOTH of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent!!!!! Congratulations to both!!
I use to do this in my Karate days and how come these fighters does not have on the small hand gloves for their striking safety? 😮
Pads to not bring safety they bring greater loss of control.
They don't use gloves in the All Japan Championship

Que buen combate, sin duda la velocidad y técnica de los dos competidores es digna de admiración 🤓👏🏻

For what???
Djako zuki all time??? Ha,ha,ha.
Neither of them performed a single foot technique.
Top muito bom adorei
Its all about control ,speed and reverse punch ,i woul modify it by must have kicks every 30 seconds or loose points
They do this in American kick boxing: 3 kicks per round for amateurs. 6 for pros. Some of them flick their legs 3 or 6 times then resume boxing.
so good
What is the technical reason why they jump much less than in sport karate?
Because this is traditional karate kumite, this is not WKF.

Boring. Where are the kicks? Nothing but straight & reverse punch. Tough men though.
Disappointing. No blocking, just straight punch. No kicks.
Too much movies.

When I watch MMA or boxing, I never laugh. But when I watch karate, I can't help it :). Why?
shotokan alla perfezione
Ridiculous and unnatural. No-one would fight like that given free choice.
To tell you the truth, what is this? Pantomime theater? Is this battle and fighting? Where? What am I missing and don't understand?

It's point fighting. Scoring. Not KO objectives.
It takes skill to score without hurting the other guy. They are competing within the rules. I would not wanna face these guys in a real fight.
kumite real, no como la mierda de wkf

Jeez that was boring.
Only been in 3 tournaments at Crystal Palace in the 70s.But too much dancing around in this.
