I rented one of these at the range and it was pretty fun to shoot. I had previously only fired up to .357 magnum, all my buds were telling me the .44 was much worse. Half way through a box of ammo, I switched to firing it one handed. Waiting around for a good price, before I add one to the collection.
My step dad just gave me his model 29-2 he bought when he finished high school in 1977. He didn’t still have the wooden box it came in but still love my gun. It’s nickel witj same wooden handle yours has. But beautiful gun great video.
I have the same gun, but it’s engraved from smith and Wesson. I was shooting some hornady loads their 200, 240, and 300 grain xtp’s and them thangs kick. I don’t have thick man hands yet, so by the 7th shot a blood blister had formed on my thumb webbing and bursted open. Never had a gun make me bleed from recoil lol. It’s such a beast I love it.
Nice! I am considering getting a current production model 29. ThHe online resources say that Dirty Harry was supposed to carry the 4" Model 29...that's the way the script was written...but they were out of production at the time and they got S&W to assemble two 29's...a 6 1/2" and an 8 3/8". So in a way...this IS Dirty Harry's gun...no ifs ands or buts ;)
Really nice piece! It's definitely on my wish list! I think I might start by getting a 586 first. I have several auto loaders now it's time for a few nice revolvers.
Yeah that's what I keep hearing. Unfortunately I live in the communist state of Massachusetts and I might have to get one of the post lock ones due to our foolish laws. But either way I think I'll be happy with it. I love that classic blue finish!
Now *that's* how it's done. When you dropped the hammer on a spent cartridge [1:30], you did not flinch an bit. That's good shooting, solid follow-thru. Personally, I think the 29, or 629, is the most beautiful handgun made, although there are many. The 19 is not too shabby either Nice video, sure makes me want to practice.
@Jimmy Sapien I got a Smith and Wesson presentation case off gun broker ,it was in about 90% condition for my 4” 629 pinned and recessed with no dash and unfired , the guy had it advertised for 75.00 +shipping I wound up paying 130.00 for it , his bids went up over 50.00 in the last 3 minutes , he probably had a buddy on speed dial to up the bid . Kinda bullshit , but I wanted the case shipping wound up bring like 13.00 , I think today you would probably pay 250 to 300.00 for one in good shape , hope this helps
The light rounds were 44 Mag, just light reloads. 240gr cast at about 1,000 fps. Little hotter than 44 Special, but closer to 44 special power levels than to 44 mag. The full power loads were factory PMC. Don`t recall the advertised velocity, but they arepretty warm.
That's a nice one. I've got one with the 6-1/2" barrel. One of my sweetest revolvers. I've got a S&W 500 and a 460XVR but I still love that old model 29 the best. The first load I assume were just .44 special? They looked pretty tame. The last ones you shot looked liked a .44 magnum should. Nice muzzle jump and fireball.
Just listening to you cock the action tells me everything I need to know about that model 29. 😎 I just happened into a pair of 29-2’s 4” nickel plated. I’m in love!!
Think I remember seeing it in one of your videos. Been quite a while back. Shooting at bowling pins? I`ve seen so many videos it`s hard to remember who did which one.
The heavy loads all produced those fireballs. The camera frame rate just isn`t fast enough to always catch them. I went through part of the video frame by frame to pick out a thumbnail to upload, none of those big muzzle flashes last more than one frame. To really see them well in video, would probably need a camera that was 3 or 4 times faster than the one I have.
Outstanding video Shep! I have been subbed to Alleric for quite sometime... Hey Shep, Why is it that some rounds produce a big fireball and some do not... I am assuming that all the rounds are all from the same lot... I noticed that some of your fireballs caught on camera are massive and the very next shot no fireball is seen... Is it the camera frame or does it have to do with something else??? I am just wondering if you know why this happens.... Thanks !!!
The rubber grips make it easier to shoot. I have both types of grips. If I were going to shoot a batch of heavy loads at one time I would change out to the rubber. Only takes a couple minutes to change them out.
Thanks, good shooting. Thinking of getting one for the woods. Selling my Glock 10mms, too big for my hands. What was the grain weight etc on the most powerful loads?
Bullet weight was 240gr. I don`t give out specific load data. You can load the 44 mag in a lot of different ways. But you have the same old story. Light and fast vs heavy and slow. Common bullet weights are any where from 180gr on up to 300gr. A light bullet will give you high velocity and a lot of kinetic energy. A heavy bullet will give you a lot of penetration.
1957Shep ah, got it. I was primarily interested in bullet weight as my impression from reading Keith and the commentary on the development of the model 29 was that it was designed originally to shoot a lot of 44 special up to mid strength 44 magnum and occasionally the most heavy and powerful loads, ie 300 to 320 grains with a good load of powder. Anything heavier on a regular basis, you're better off with an overbuilt Ruger single action from what I've read. Kind of breaks down to Keith et al's idea of a guide gun vs the silhouette shooters and the development of the anti-grizzly cannons like the 454 casull, 475 linebaugh etc. My use would be primarily for black bear and smaller with occasional visits to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and other places with medium to large animals. My first impulse was to go 357 but the guides I talked to and Ketih preferred the truly big bore against even medium sized animals. Was also interested in recoil control as the power of the round increased. Thanks for the demonstration.
Okay since you mastered that step up to Taurus 454 then when you get done with that one step up to the 460 and then lastly the 500 Smith & Wesson and don't wimp out with a 4-inch go for the 6in where you get maximum velocity out of the bullet
29-2 has the recessed cylinder and the pinned barrel and I have one in the 4" nickle that is a presentation model and one in the 6.5" barrel and the 4" is incredibly accurate and probably as much so as the 6.5". Very comfortable to shoot but not made to shoot loads over 240-gr........... would have to use my Rugers for those super heavy loads but the Ruger will never have the trigger that the 29-2 has.
Never tried any 44 Russian. Since the 44 special and magnum are based off the old 44 russian, it ought to fit. Probably feel like shooting a 38 in a revolver this size.
Looks like great fun! I recently ordered a new model 29-10 classic. Not quite as nice as the older originals I know, but still not a bad way to go for a brand new revolver. Should be picking mine up from my FFL in the next day or two. Really looking forward to getting it. Hopefully I can get used to the recoil. Never shot a handgun anymore powerful than a 45 ACP and 357 Magnum before. Also wanted to ask what loads you were shooting in this video? Those full power Magnums seem to have quite a bit of bark to them.
No idea what ammo I used in that video. That video was made years ago. Probably some of my own reloaded ammo. If you find the full magnum loads a bit rough, you can always use 44 Special in it. 44 Special is very mild to shoot in it.
That revolver shooting it on 6" with the strongest loads it's gonna be just like a dynamyte cartridge in Dirty Harry...GIFT ME YOUR REVOLVER, I WANNA BE SHOOTING IT, PLEASE!!!!!!! (X:D). How much did that cost your revovlver? P.D. I'm joking (because I'm Spanish), but I really would like to shoot it, that's not false. How much did that cost your revolver? Next year I can buy it legally, so I'll be saving money to buy it. I hope to buy it soon!
my uncle finally gave me his 44 magnum, its a 1957 pre-model 29 with 4" barrel. what a beautiful beast
Those pre 29s are getting to be high dollar guns these days.
You should do a video with it some time.
1957Shep i will do a video of it very soon
AWSOME Congratulations !!!!
That was and still is one of the most popular revolvers of all times. I've seen many Georgia State Troopers carry it.
I think the Smith&Wesson N frame guns were some of best guns ever made. The 27 and 29 are my all time favorites. Very nice shooting.
Thanks.
Awesome gun, Sir! Congratulations for owning one, and thanks a lot for this beautiful video.
Thanks for taking the time to watch.
Good shooting, Shep! Really enjoyed your video. Smith and Wesson definitely makes beautiful reliable revolvers.
Thanks for taking the time to watch.
Sorry to be so long replying to your comment.
I always try to reply to comments, but sometimes I miss a few.
Yes Great shooting awesome

There's got to be a Model 29 in that Smith collection somewhere-and there it is! Nice!!
I have the same gun, but it’s engraved from smith and Wesson. I was shooting some hornady loads their 200, 240, and 300 grain xtp’s and them thangs kick. A set of rubber grips help quite a bit with the felt recoil. They are fairly cheap. MidwayUSA should have several to pick from,
www.midwayusa.com/
Tossing those plates around. Nice fireball.
Magnificent gun!
Thats a thing of beauty. Nice shooting. Almost did a over the top on the 2 smaller plates haha!
Such a beautiful fire arm
Beautiful gun and beautiful balls of fire!!!
Definitely
on my list for 2019. Thanks for the video.

They are high quality revolvers. And the older ones are becoming very collectible as well as being great shooters.
Great gun there, You did a great job
Another great revolver Shep!
Those are getting to be high dollar guns these days. Hold on to it.
My goodness gracious... It's got quite a kick! (: Another beautiful gun Shep
Really nice piece! It's definitely on my wish list! I think I might start by getting a 586 first. I have several auto loaders now it's time for a few nice revolvers.
The 586 and 686 are excellent revolvers. Especially the older ones.
Yeah that's what I keep hearing. Unfortunately I live in the communist state of Massachusetts and I might have to get one of the post lock ones due to our foolish laws. But either way I think I'll be happy with it. I love that classic blue finish!
Nice, brought out the big iron today!
I love that recoil..
It`s not all that bad. The recoil is pretty tame compared to the 500 S&W or 454 Casull.
Another great revolver

Nice video, sure makes me want to practice.
Even after all these years I still catch myself flinching once in a while.
1957Shep where can you get a wooden Box for a 29-2 if you don’t have one ?
@Jimmy Sapien I got a Smith and Wesson presentation case off gun broker ,it was in about 90% condition for my 4” 629 pinned and recessed with no dash and unfired , the guy had it advertised for 75.00 +shipping I wound up paying 130.00 for it , his bids went up over 50.00 in the last 3 minutes , he probably had a buddy on speed dial to up the bid . Этот револьвер великолепен! Спасибо за видео!
This revolver is amazing! Thanks for this video!
Thanks for watching.
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the shout!
AWESOME - AMAZING REVOLVER ...
Thanks

Good shooting as usual. Love the big bad SW 44 ,..KaBoom,....
That's a nice one. I've got one with the 6-1/2" barrel. One of my sweetest revolvers. I've got a S&W 500 and a 460XVR but I still love that old model 29 the best. "My, that's a big one!" ... Scorpio to Callahan.
I think the model 29 is my next purchase
kawiman09 Mine too
Hell yea 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
what a gun
Whoa, Somethings wrong here. When Dirty Harry fired his Model 29 it sounded like a 16 inch naval gun.
That's what I thought.
That’s cause it’s tha Movies .
great video as always
Nice S&W Shep, got a 629, that I don't shoot all that much. Maybe I'll get it out now.
Got some flashes to :)
Awsome..
Thanks.
Another nice one!
Just listening to you cock the action tells me everything I need to know about that model 29. 😎
I just happened into a pair of 29-2’s 4” nickel plated. I’m in love!!
You should do a video with them sometime.
1957Shep I will. Thanks. 😎
I don`t think anyone would feel under gunned with one of these. :)
I LIKE THIS SNOB NOSE VERSION BETTER. GOD ALMIGHTY WHAT A MONSTER
It is a handful.
A street howitzer! Thanks!
If you missed the bear, at close range, the muzzle blast would probably set him on fire. :)
Think I remember seeing it in one of your videos.
Been quite a while back. Shooting at bowling pins?
I`ve seen so many videos it`s hard to remember who did which one.
Think I remember seeing it in one of your videos.
Been a few months ago I think.
I see so many videos it`s hard to remember who did which one.
Very nice Gun.
There were big muzzle flashs with all the heavy loads. My camera just isn`t fast enough to always catch them.
Thanks.
And you`re welcome.
Hell yeah!! Gotta get me one :)
That's one of my "grail" guns.
That is a *sweet* gun; one of these days I'll get one myself.
Thanks
l have the 29-8 4" it's one of my favorites
It barks pretty good with a 4 inch barrel.
If you missed the bear at close range, the muzzle blast would probably set him on fire. :)
Now that's a FIREBALL!!!
The heavy loads all produced those fireballs. The camera frame rate just isn`t fast enough to always catch them.

To really see them well in video, would probably need a camera that was 3 or 4 times faster than the one I have.
I love how you shoot with your mouth open haha. nothing like a revolver or a lever action sometimes.
pause exactly at 2:00 for a giant magnum fireball
If you missed the bear, the muzzle blast would probably set him on fire. :)
Actually there are two of them. Also have a 29-3 with the 8 3/8th barrel.
Oh yeah, nice muzzle flast
Outstanding video Shep! I have been subbed to Alleric for quite sometime... Hey Shep, Why is it that some rounds produce a big fireball and some do not... Is it the camera frame or does it have to do with something else??? I am just wondering if you know why this happens.... Thanks !!!
You also handle that 4 inch 44 mag like a boss
Very nice
I have the exact gun 29-2, but mine came with pachmayer grips. I bought the gun used.
The rubber grips make it easier to shoot. I have both types of grips.
If I were going to shoot a batch of heavy loads at one time I would change out to the rubber. Only takes a couple minutes to change them out.
I have the same issue with my camera.
Flash is between 2 frames. Or sometimes I only see half a flash.
With a 4 inch barrel, a lot of the powder is still burning when the bullet leaves the barrel.
Thanks, good shooting. Thinking of getting one for the woods. Selling my Glock 10mms, too big for my hands. What was the grain weight etc on the most powerful loads?

ya l have it stuck in there in a couple different videos, l may end up splitting the play lists and range videos into particular guns
I've got one of those, but it's a Pre-29 five screw.
Everybody needs a Dirty Harry gun. :)
I think I like yours better. I like the shorter barrel.
I did shoot it at bowling pins, pretty good memory but It's not a test, I don't remember all the vids I watch either.
I own a S&W Model 29-10 with a 4" barrel length.
Got this one from a local guy 14 years ago. Doubt it had had more than a box of ammo shot with it when I bought it.
1957Shep Beautiful Gun
Okay since you mastered that step up to Taurus 454 then when you get done with that one step up to the 460 and then lastly the 500 Smith & Wesson and don't wimp out with a 4-inch go for the 6in where you get maximum velocity out of the bullet
those extra loads creates nice fireworks, lol

1957Shep heck I would rather let my lil Lady shoot them and I would film them.
1957Shep enjoyed yours though. what part of the country are you in???
Robert Quigley Iowa
Oh yeah triggers are so smooth on a Smith & Wesson !
Great video Shep, those hot loads would show up well in low light.
Nice.
Thanks.

What was the high powered loads you were using
Nice shooting, beautiful, beautiful gun. If you only had one .44, what length barrel would you get?
Probably a 6 inch.
Wasn`t even really low light, just a bit cloudy that day.
What load is the first 12 rounds? Thanks.
Don`t remember. Did this video a year and a half ago. Probably some of my reloads.
4 inch blue
How much is that gun worth today? Thanks
Look on gunbroker.com and see what they have been selling for lately.
@@1957Shep i thought you might know off the top of your head

Every bears worst nightmare.
It's funny how you have to keep looking into the camera like that.
I have a 29-2 I bought ln the early 80s never fired it-
Wow
you look like your in alaska?
Never been there.
Dirty Harry's was a 29-2
no one dared to ask the stranger
no one dared to make a slip
for the stranger there among them had the big iron on his hip
big iron on his hiiiiiiiip
It does qualify as Big Iron. :)
I'm think about trading my glock 20 with a a lot if extras for a model 29-2...
😁👍
Thanks.
She has a nasty kick?
no wonder you miss often, you are a flincher,,,,,,,,,,
These types of videos - where ammo specs are NOT fully given, are worthless !
