To all the Ricky fans here, let a personal friend of his tell you he was as good a guy offstage as he was onstage and on screen. By the time I met him he had been through the hard times with drugs and divorce, and was comfortable in his own skin again, and feeling upbeat about the future. Making good records too. His music brings back only good memories, but it now also reminds me of warm friendship, and one man's life, that ended way too soon. To say I miss him is an understatement.
I agree with the sincere compliments for a simple and true Mr Nice Guy with a unique voice, who did not get the praise that he deserved, during his time. Yeah, he is sadly missed now, but his music shall live-on...! May he Rest in Peace... J
I love Rick doing Truck Drivin Man... I've watched this video many times and played along on my Tele. This is the first time I've noticed Ricks wife Chris Harmon sitting in the audience.
Most of the soft sounds of what we would refer to as romantic Rock"n"Roll, were all played in the key of C,no matter what people have heard,Ricky was a great guy,and I have heard a lot of stories concerning him,he was my friend, going all the way back to 1958,I know his kids now,I am still in touch with all of them,so if anyone would like any info firsthand about him, please feel free to ask.Sincerely, The Original Chevelles. Chuck Bruni
Thnx whitetrash88 for the info on the songwriters re the songs Ricky sings in this clip. Re "I catch Myself Crying" .. I did not know the composer was Roger Miller .. but upon very-first hearing I knew straight away it was a very well-structured song, & classy, very pleasing to the ear. I'm therefore not surprised that someone as legendary as Roger Miller wrote it - and it also sounds, at least to me, a touch like a Roy Orbison style of composition. Great posting, great memories of Ricky here.
Just like parents to talk through the guitar solo! The first song, "I Catch Myself Crying," is a Roger Miller composition that Rick got from a Jim Reeves record.
James Burton giving Buck Owen's that Telecastor sound at 2:11 and 2:44 they later called the Bakersfield sound and even a little Merle Haggard at solo start 3:10. This is a great performance.
Yep, that's James Burton. Rick wanted his own musicians not just studio regulars....so he rounded up some top guys, who eventually became the Stone Canyon Band. Great band.
I realize your comment is a few years old but I just now discovered this video. Ricky's original guitar player was Joe Maphis who was known as the "King of Strings" because of his virtuosity on many different stringed instruments. He played for Ricky on all of his early hits( I'm Walking, Be Bop Baby, Stood Up etc.) In late summer of 1957 Ricky hired James Burton who had been Dale Hawkins( Susie Q) lead guitar player. James Kirkland-upright bass and drummer Richie Frost completed the new back up band for Ricky. Their first appearance on a record was the 1958 hit "Believe What You Say". None of these guys were ever members of The Stone Canyon Band. They were lead guitarist Allen Kemp/ Bass player Randy Meisner( former founding member of both Poco and The Eagles/ steel guitar player Tom Brumley who was a member of Buck Owens band The Buckaroos and drummer Patrick Shanahan.
I love this version of Truck Drivin' Man. On the record Burton majors on Dobro-this version he's doing his Telecaster thing and it's just a little less hectic- although I like both!
Last time i saw him was this past yr at a guitar festival he started & is doing well. I agree Ricky is one of the tops & will be but, Elvis...What else needs to be said? He is & will always be the King of Rock-n-ROll.
I noticed on one closeup the camerman scooted over and made room for JB. It's unusual for the star to share the limelight with a sideman. But JB was no ususal sideman, he started the whole chickin' pickin' sensation. He played on some Buck Owens recordings and later with Merle Haggard and even John Denver.
Superb. Check out Bright Lights and Country Music/Country Fever CD's and one can see the direction these songs are leading to. James Burton's guitar playing as usual is amazing.
I once had an album of his first shot at country music. The feature song was "Bright Lights and Country Music"; now that I look back at it, it was a pretty good album...I'm sure it's probably available in cd.
Its called the Ghost Town, season 14, episode 13. It might be on one of the dvd packages out now. Check on Amazon. I bought some before they had the bigger sets out. So I know another place you can get it if need be.
Burton played for just about everybody. John Denver for one. He played in the Roy Orbison "Black and White Ball" video. At age 17 he was Dale Hawkins lead guitarist( Susie Q) and was one of the most in demand session guitarist all through his career.
@cagney24 That's great to hear-his voice was one of the common threads in the music I listened to as akid with my older brother, and still love to this day.
@wdchefdave56 Willie was already an established singer-songwriter at the time this came out, so I doubt he'd be doing session work, especially on an electric guitar:)
Why did Ozzie leave? He had to get up early work in the morning? I don't think so. He didn't have a job--at least no reference was ever made to him having one for the entire run of O&H!
@omarskats3000 you're probably right but I just can't imagine Elvis saying that as he actually came from the working class while Ricky came from the upper middle class No criticism just two different views
Ozzy should have been reprimanded for talking over James Burton's guitar solo- most inconsiderate for us Burton worshippers! Rick's country albums get overlooked as they were ground-breaking- people talk about The Byrds, Dylan and Gram Parsons doing the early country rock stuff but Ricky was there in 1966 so was one of those pioneers.
@cagney24 Yeah and he put the "Y" back in his name and returned to the IMPERIAL sound --so much so that he seemed embarrased when he performed Garden Party
Would really like to know which episode this was from. I looked at every one on TH-cam and nothing seemed to click. Does anyone know if it is on DVD? Thanks.
One of the greatest Rock n' Rollers, Ricky does country just as well.
Ricky Nelson had so much talent. I have liked this man's music since the 50s.

I think that first one might be my favorite Rick Nelson song.
Yep, that's James Burton. Rick wanted his own musicians not just studio regulars....so he rounded up some top guys, who eventually became the Stone Canyon Band. Great band.

Wonder who got stuck sweeping up the sawdust in the malt shop after this?
RIP Rick. You were one of the best.
Yes that is the one & only James Burton. He lives here in Shreveport. Proud to say I'm a friend of his.
The reactions from Oz are pure love for his son.
Thanks for your kind words on Ricky,he seemed a really nice human being, you were very lucky to know him.
Yes, the 50's... what a great time and great music. That's why I still do a lot of 50's stuff in our country band.
Don't much like the hat but will always love Rick ❤
@no1countryfan Elvis was a regular at the Nelson home. Also he shared his guitarist with Elvis.
I love this version of Truck Drivin' Man. On the record Burton majors on Dobro-this version he's doing his Telecaster thing and it's just a little less hectic- although I like both!
Miss you Ricky
Yes, it is!
what a Great loss of Talent.
RIP Rick
The first song is called "I Catch Myself Crying" from his 'Love And Kisses' LP in 1965. I believe it was written by Roger Miller
Ricky was a big success in Chile (1958-1963).TH-cam search for DISCO 45 of Manuel Vargas, and you will see an honoring to the best music of all times.
He could do it all...

unforgettable in Rio Bravo
Legendary and young guitarist James Burton and Joe Osborn in the background.

Burton played for just about everybody. John Denver for one. He played in the Roy Orbison "Black and White Ball"

James Burton!!!!!
@cagney24
That's great to hear-his voice was one of the common threads in the music I listened to as akid with my older brother, and still love to this day.
Early 60s' Kris Harmon is in the audience
Your parents walk out before the song's over? They couldn't wait another 30 seconds? That hurts.
check out the band... is that Willie to the right?
thats great to know, cos he came off as a real descent guy,
Awesome! Only James Burton can make the Tele sound like a steel guitar.
Hach, schöne Schnulze! ...aber der HUT!!!
Aaaaaaaaaah........!!!
They Don't make'em like that anymore...
@wdchefdave56 Willie was already an established singer-songwriter at the time this came out, so I doubt he'd be doing session work, especially on an electric guitar:)
