    Me: I remain neutral on the legal status of Western Sahara, in line with the position of the Government of Canada and the United Nations.
    Moroccans: You hate Morocco! Disinformation! You are pro-SADR!
    Me: I remain neutral on the legal status of Western Sahara, and do not align with either side.
    Moroccans: You aren't welcome in Morocco.
    Me: I remain neutral on the legal status of Western Sahara, just like 143 countries on our planet (apart from the 49 that have chosen a side). I love Morocco and will visit many times in the future. It's one of my favourite countries. If I'm not welcome, then all of Canada is not welcome - right?
    Moroccans: You are an Algerian propagandist
    Me: I remain neutral on the legal status of Western Sahara, even if this hurts your feelings. This is not a political channel, and I do not take political stances within my videos.

    • @aminedhdh8978
      @aminedhdh8978 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Let it be known to you, my friend, that not all the inhabitants of Tindouf are from the Western Sahara region, but Algeria brought people from other places who resemble the traditions and customs of the inhabitants of Western Sahara and speak the same dialect so that they could enter Morocco and be against Morocco and serve Algeria’s political agendas. For this reason, Morocco does not allow the return of inhabitants from Tindouf unless conditions are met, such as that their ancestors were and lived and were counted in the Spanish Sahara before the departure of the colonizers, and this is what Algeria rejects. It wants all the inhabitants of the Tindouf camp to return to the Moroccan Western Sahara so that there will be a greater number of the original inhabitants who are with Morocco.

    This is the Moroccan Sahara, to be differenciated from the immense Oriental Sahara occupied by Algeria and inherited from ex colonial power; annexed from neighboring countries Morocco, Niger, Tunisia, Libya..
    Kingdom of Morocco existed for 12 centuries with territory as big as all of central North Africa, with extensive territories deep in Sub-Sahara.
    Name of Morocco itself in Arabic is .."Maghreb", in other words, in the past Morocco encompassed all of North Africa.
    To be noted Algeria is a modern creation, this state was created and named Algeria by France no sooner than 1830.
    On the other side KABYLIE preexisted to Algeria itself as independent and autonomous state.
    These are facts resting on objective History.

      Hi, I am Kabyle, and all what you said is false. Please google everything am gonna say so that you don't bother me. Let me tell you who you are :
      The name Morocco originates from the Spanish word Marruecos, derived from Marrakech and doesn't have anything to do with an arab word such as Maghreb.
      The name Algeria in the other hand, as the name of the current country, was adopted in the 16th century, not during French colonization as you just said.
      For a more balanced understanding of your existence, here are two important points to remember:
      1. It is not our fault if your are poor and lacks resources. We fought many wars and we won all of them eventually... against France in 1954-1962, Greecs in 1827 where we lost our navy and caused our colonization in 1830 so I will go pre colonization, against Spain in the 1790s we liberated Oran which was the last Spanish-held territory on our land (though Spain still holds Ceuta and Melilla in northern Morocco), The US in 1780's which led the US to pay an annual tribute of $21,600 to Algiers and the creation of the U.S. Navy. In 1792 we even captured your RIF and we even reached Andalusia passing through your land. So yeah I have many many other examples which logically led to make our land the 10th BIGGEST country in the WORLD. However, your country or I would say the arab people who controlled the amazigh of you lost every war in history and had 0 victory so of course you have only Sand. ( Haha and now you want to expand your sand over poor Western Sahara indigenous people but there's still a line in your map, that's all what Dave is trying to explain. )
      2 and Lastly, la Kabylie is Algeria and Algeria is la Kabylie. When Numidia existed and put North Africa on the map, your country did not exist.

      No one is criticizing your Monarchy, and I have no issues with your King. To consider people who defer to the United Nations to solve the question of Western Sahara as your enemies is absurd. The United Nations was created to address global disputes following WWII. These are the functions of our global community and world order. If you don't like them, why do you remain in the United Nations, and why do you maintain diplomatic relations (and allow emigration) to countries such as Canada and Germany that take a neutral position? Not everyone is your enemy, and Morocco has the right to claim Western Sahara. However, it is important that Morocco do so through our established international law and processes, if they want widespread international recognition.

    Sahrawi here👋🏻 and I’d tell you this. I was born and raised in this part of the world and stayed till I was 18 and Left for college (Uni) to this day I would ask my grandparent if their parents or grandparents ever had any sort of central government governing this region or had any stamps for mails or dealt with any currency other than currency of Maghreb they’d say no. The only Christian gov they knew is Spanish as invader and the only Muslim gov they had peace with for centuries is the one previously was based in Fez and moved to rabat in 1912. And you call it disputed territory. Disputed with who? Mass majority of fighters that the Moroccans fought were coming sub Sahara recruited by Algerians as mercenaries. Sahara been Moroccan for centuries and sahrawi aren’t about letting Polisario to run this land especially with communist agenda. Anyways. Welcome to Sahara and long live Maghreb🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for sharing your experiences as a Sahrawi living in Morocco. The term “disputed territory” is applied by the United Nations to refer to the dual claims by Morocco and the SADR. In international law, sovereignty is seen through two lenses: de jure (by law) and de facto (what actually is). Western Sahara is currently regarded by the United Nations as Spanish de jure (in law) but de facto Morocco (in practice). They remain officially neutral on the legal status of Western Sahara, and view it as not having been properly decolonized under international law. However, they recognize Morocco as the de facto controllers of Western Sahara, even if no international laws or treaties have been established granting Morocco that right. Certainly Morocco has its own sets of laws that legitimize its own claims, but until these are recognized by the United Nations, Morocco will continue to have two colours on every world map and globe, and continue to have a dashed border with the words “disputed territory” on every map (including on Google Maps). So yes, in practice it is Morocco, but it still considered disputed until a treaty is signed.

      The entire Sahel, where the vestiges of ISIL / ISIS fled after being pushed out of Iraq and Syria. Most notably southern Algeria / Mali / Niger / Chad / Burkina Faso. The porous nature of the borders within the Sahel contribute to the insecurity there. Beautiful video! By the way: don't be overwhelmed by Moroccans trying to correct you or being angry with you, haha! To Moroccans, the Sahara is part of the country's core and heart. Certain Moroccan dynasties, such as the Almoravid Empire, originated from that area. This was the first empire that unified all of Morocco's territory. That's why this brings out so many emotions in many people.
    I just wanted to point this out, since I read a lot of responses from emotionalized, and even angry, Moroccans and I hope you don't get the impression that Moroccans are aggressive people.😁

What I don’t respect is anger and hate directed towards those who maintain neutrality and defer to the mechanisms of our world order such as the UN for resolving territorial disputes. Expecting a non-aligned tourist to simply tow the party line on his TH-cam channel is just the height of arrogance - so, yes, they’ve been a bit annoying, but I know that the average Moroccan is a kind person at heart, and my experiences of its people won’t be defined by keyboard warriors having digital tantrums because I defer to my country’s and the UN’s position of neutrality. Hey! It's a simple process - I learned about the fiche requirement from fellow travellers who had been turned away by the checkpoints and told to return to the nearest town to make copies. Having the photocopies ensures that you won't have any problems - you'll also need these in Mauritania (always) and Guinea (depends on the cop). I like to make plenty as it avoids the need to physically give up your passport, and avoids the risk of being turned away. Make at least 20 copies if you're heading south to West Africa. They just take the page for their records and you're free to go.

Be prepared to be scrutinized, but they aren’t as intimidating as the ones you’ll find in West Africa. There’s zero bribery in Morocco so that’s a bonus. If anything would have happened (even a twisted ankle) I would have had to pay out of pocket for my medical bills.

      @DrifterDave  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Ok-ok-ok-ok-ok The title of the video includes the term “Disputed Territory of Western Sahara” and I make note that it’s disputed throughout the video. Even Google Maps shows it as “Laayoune, Western Sahara” - the Western Sahara is a region of Africa, north of Mauritania. Am I supposed to call it Morocco only? The location cards are almost all labelled “Morocco/Western Sahara”. Neutral means I don’t have an opinion, period. It’s Western Sahara on every world map except those produced by Moroccans - like it or not, it’s disputed, and “Western Sahara” is the neutral term that even the UN uses. I didn’t call it the Sahrawi Republic, did I? No - I used its accurate geographical description.

    That's brave of you to make a video on this region 👏🏽 I hope you're well prepared for Moroccan comments who will not understand your neutrality, and and the Algerians who take it upon themselves to prevent anybody from using the words Morocco and Sahara next to each other 😂 while pretending they're not a a party in the conflict of course. The truth is this: colonial powers intentionally left messy undefined borders, and the freshly independent government made some bad mistakes. But a state with 300k people at best is not viable, and balkanization is not the way of the future. The only way out is to stop fighting over who started what, and seek consensus and compromise in the present. But for that, we need all the Parties to have good faith. If the agenda is to extend the conflict for political gains, it will never be solved, or might escalate into something worse.

      Thank you for your kind words. I knew when posting this video that the subject matter would be controversial, but I've tried to maintain a neutral perspective in line with my own country's foreign policy. It's definitely annoying to see so many Moroccans claim that the region is 'perfectly safe', despite the recently rocket attack at the border (I wouldn't have wanted to be there that day!) and the "AVOID ALL TRAVEL" advisory for the border regions of Western Sahara by the Government of Canada (and AVOID NON ESSENTIAL TRAVEL for the rest of the region). The Moroccan commenters been a hypersensitive bunch, for sure, even though Moroccans are usually quite pleasant in person. PS - I appreciate that you've expressed your own nuanced perspective on this complicated issue, as it's something that affects so many people. Hopefully, Morocco can begin to recognize that this is actually a disputed matter on the world stage, and bargain in good faith for international recognition. However, angry comments on TH-cam seem to be their go-to solution, so far. They seem to think "neutral" means "against Morocco".

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Do you think that Morocco and the Sahrawi will ever come to an agreement and sign a peace treaty? One solution might include the SADR becoming a recognized semi-autonomous territory within Morocco (like Iraqi Kurdistan in Iraq, or Nunavut Territory in Canada). Would this be an acceptable middle ground for the Sahrawi people?

    • @MohamedKutami
      @MohamedKutami 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @DrifterDave The Moroccan monarchy was built by the French on the model of the French absolute monarchy, with a very strong Jacobin orientation of the centralizing state. Your proposal is interesting and could have succeeded within the framework of a constitutional monarchy like England, because in the United Kingdom the reform of the Carta Magna gave the monarchy time to liberalize but the Moroccan monarchy does not share this liberalism and will not leave any room for maneuver for real autonomy and management of their territory to the Sahrawi. The Moroccan monarchy is a predatory monarchy that does not want to share wealth with anyone, the Sahrawi know it and that is the reason why they refuse this fictitious autonomy that Morocco offers them. And for its part, the Moroccan monarchy is also counting on time to proceed with a population replacement in Western Sahara by massively implanting Moroccan settlers there. The problem is therefore insoluble and only a military victory of the Sahrawi could unblock the situation, or else the Sahrawi will have to disappear as a nation if they agree to become Moroccan.

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It’s definitely going to take some flexibility and willingness to accommodate in order for the dispute to be resolved. When I consider how many threats I’ve received simply for acknowledging this is an ongoing international dispute within the United Nations, I lose hope that resolution can be found, as it seems many commenters here simply don’t care that their country is viewed by the UN as having violated international law. And, they accuse me of not being neutral - in their eyes, the only acceptable action is to recognize Morroco’s claims, regardless of international law, which is not a “neutral” position. They’re frustrated that I’m actually neutral, but I’m staying out of it, as is most of the rest of humanity, evidently - and I’m beginning to see why. Some of these people have a blatant disregard for our world order and how we resolve international conflicts post-WWII. For me, until the UN (and Canada) recognize Morocco’s claim, I will remain neutral on the matter and continue to not recognize either side’s claim until a formal treaty is signed.

      I can't say that I'd disagree with you. And, as a Western traveller, I'd hate for a strict visa regime like Algeria's to be imposed there, thus interrupting the journey to West Africa. I also was spoiled with almost European-level development all the way south to Dakhla (the roads and standard of living deteriorates south of there), and I felt safe the entire time I was in Morocco.

      De Jure vs. De Facto. Currently, Western Sahara is de facto Moroccan territory (meaning everyone recognizes that this is in practice MOROCCO). However, international law under the United Nations still only recognizes Spain as the de jure owners of Western Sahara, with the process of decolonization incomplete. Until the dispute between Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is resolved by peace treaty, most maps and globes of the world (including Google Maps) will show Morocco with two colours and with a dashed border indicating the disputed territory. Personally, I would like for it to remain Morocco, with some semi-autonomy recognized for the Sahrawi under Moroccan rule. There is room for peaceful resolution. In my country of Canada, the Inuit (formerly known as Eskimo) people have semi-autonomous status in Nunavut territory, and they run their own regional government under the flag of Canada. The Canadian government is superior, and our laws supersede any that they create, but they are given authority over themselves for most issues. Curious if that might be a solution that would work for Western Sahara?
