No, but they have to bounce the calls from bird to bird to a gateway in Phoenix Arizona and then it hits the POTS...which definitely puts major lag in there, Inmarsat is just one up and down bounce to their gate, but its 50,000 miles round trip...still, if you have an Iridium call off 3 satellites, because its a call from the Indian Ocean or something that’s a huge distance...and one hell of a lag...🤷♂️

With regard to your satellite connection dropping out every minute or so it may well be due to the system being one which utilizes low orbit satellites. I have used similar systems in very remote areas and learned that if the satellite your system is connected to passes out of line of sight below the horizon before the next satellite in the sequence has risen above the horizon, then you can lose connectivity.

Starlink *claims* to be only for stationary .... objects/mounting ... and Dish has a lawsuit against Starlink to force them to crack down to RV customers already.
Already mentionned about ssb and Pactor but there is winlink if you are a Ham radio operator with their winmor protocol via soundcard. But no commercial use.

There are a lot of qualities to this podcast channel that go unnoticed if you are not looking for it. What we all get however is a very pleasant sensation of watching high-quality video with very useful contents. This is certainly my favorite channel at the moment.
Yep. I got this reaction watching the drone footage of them going in water from the dingy. Iooked great, but I’m sure they had to get back on board to retrieve the drone and then Go in water for more shots... great edits ! Must be time consuming to shoot and edit. But WAIT YOU SAY....Sat Internet service usually sucks, but the criteria for this is supposed to be as fast as cable. I can't give you any more details due to being sworn to secrecy, but watch for it in the next two years! 2020. And BTW..it will be around $20 to $30 per month covering the entire globe.
@@gonewiththewynns Look for info on OneWeb, as well their competition Spacex's version called Starlink. It is the same concept as Iridium's constellation of satellites, but with one fundamental difference - the satellites will have a much lower orbit, which they claim will solve the delay problem (low latency is critical for 4G/5G networks). Also, there will be a vast number of satellites in the constellation to solve the problem of capacity (promising all users very high throughput)

I used google fi for a year. It is marketed at the best connection at cheaper prices. I found that it has been a lot slower and more expensive in most countries including the US. Maybe it's a deal in Bahamas but not very many places. It is nice you don't have to change sim cards but its pretty easy to get a sim card in a new country.

Space-X will solve the internet problem in a few years. They are launching hundreds of micro-satellites to provide Broadband to any place on earth on Wi-Fi. It will be a massive game-changer!
I assume at some point they will come out with a marine satellite internet system. You are right, it is crazy how many satellites they have. They have launched around 3 thousand as of now
Yeah, but.... How expensive will it be? As much as we have come to think of being unconnected as being inconvenient, there is a huge benefit to being disconnected. There's a university professor in Canada (I don't remember which university) but he often has to travel across country for conferences. He has said that if at all possible, he takes the train because for 3 days nobody can pester him with emails. He uses the time to just unwind from the hectic world.
What a game changer when Elon gets more of those new satellites. The 2 test sats put up Feb 2018 are doing fine. He is now pushing that division to get things going. Got rid of a few people that were dragging their feet on getting those up in a timely manner. System works, now finalize tweaks and I think SpaceX is capable of putting them in orbit. I think by late 2019 you will have the option to get possibly as high as 1gbs internet in some areas. It will take some time to get the 4000 sats up.I am guessing they may modify their tree to pop 50 at a time but the iridiums were 10. Great review. Very comprehensive. Nice to see updates from different channels. Delos last one was 2 years ago. The tech changes around the world. Alot of work on this video. Must have spent weeks on it. Thanks and happy cruising.
We live on “internet beers” for our video uploads, but do the local SIM card to get limited internet while on the boat. We went with the Delorme InReach for our texting and tracking while out in th pe middle of the ocean. Thanks for the pointers, it’s good to know what others are doing to stay connected.
Very cool vid, thanks for diving in to the technical stuff. Couple things Im inspired to point out - Google Fi blends T-Mobile/Sprint/US Cellular for cell data (but only one at a time) and has great wifi calling/sms compatibility. Sometimes however Fi will decide that good call connection is a higher priority than a marginal data connection and can force you onto a cell carrier that has no data. "Fi Switch" is an app that lets you manually control which carrier it connects to (or just seeing which one you are connected to) so you can explore which cell network has the best for your needs (call vs data). Also take a look at the Calyx Institute - They use the Sprint mobile network and through mobile citizen they can offer truely unlimited data packages for an entire year. Its worth some digging to see if you can find sprint cell service on the coast but even if its only 1/2 the time you're abroad you would have 100+mbps up/down in good areas and Ive run it well over 400gb of data in a single month and never had any issues with the service (some unlimited providers will throttle or flag you for abuse beyond a certain cap, Calyx does not).
Wow! What a good range of options you have. The Google-Fi sounds best for me as a cruiser on larger ships! I currently have unlimited Vodafone, though once abroad its limited to what the local provider lets you have. The burner phone sounds a good plan, though I part exchanged my last phone to upgrade from Galaxy S8 to S9, but I’ll think about that next time I change.
You two are awesome. How have you learnt to hold your breath and go so deep. I panic going 5ft down for 20 seconds. LOL , so amazed how you do that. Also the filming was out of this world as usual. . You both have a fantastic life, that many of us are jealous of. You both deserve it big time.

Useful information for connecting to a local hotspot near me on land. The Wifi Ranger is all I really need, you guys go way beyond the bare minimum. Since you guys aren't reinventing the wheel and are going to places other cruisers have been to before (for the most part), I assume you do a little research before you go somewhere or "know people" who give you a head's up what is available before you drop anchor. Maybe your tricks in that regard will be the basis of an extension of this great video. Anyway, thanks, and good journey!
Pretty cool. I was wondering how you handle internet connectivity in French Poly since I had heard that it's slow and expensive there. By watching one of your early sailing videos, I remember one where Nikki mentioned Iridium-Go and how she needs to read up on how to use it. I think you were still in Dania in that video having the boat worked on. But in later videos you 2 were always looking for a place with wi-fi. So from that I knew that Iridium-Go wasn't great for uploading 1+GB HD videos to TH-cam. However I think it's great that you have all those other options that you explained in great detail. I missed your fancy open at the top of this video this week. I have to say, as a video editor myself, your editing has vastly improved. Keep up the great work. Sunday's are great. I get to watch live NFL games and a Gone with the Wynns video. LOL.

Starlink *claims* to be only for stationary .... objects/mounting ... and Dish has a lawsuit against Starlink to force them to crack down to RV customers already.
I assume at some point they will come out with a marine satellite internet system
If you ever need it, there is also SailMail, using HF radio and Pactor4 Modem. Its crazy what it can do.
Finally! A video that explains the internet in remote locations. Thank you!!
Already mentionned about ssb and Pactor but there is winlink if you are a Ham radio operator with their winmor protocol via soundcard. But no commercial use.
You two are getting very slick at editing now. You clearly put in quite a bit of time setting up shots. There was a few shots there that would have taken 20min to setup a shoot but lasted seconds. It must sometimes feel like it wasn’t worth it but I just wanted to say,it’s noticed and appreciated.
simon miles agree - like that shot of the tropical fish and coral where it looks like they set a camera on the seabed and retrieved it after they got the footage. Nicely done! Edit: missing words
We forget there’s only 2 of you and no film crew. Bravo 👍🏻
Yeah, their stuff is like watching a professionally made movie, but yet the studio and everything is right in front of us. Yet it looks like a sailboat, not a studio! They really are amazing :)
I was telling my wife the same thing. Yeah NO FILM CREW. To take a lot of these shots requires just what you said, and this is just what burns me when some come here and rag on these two. Those trolls have no idea what goes into making these videos and THEN...have to find a way to upload the darn thing.
You guys rock!!! As vets of livin off the grid, this video takes next level ....really helpful. Excellent as always and BTW, that intro dive was spectacular in so many way. Kudos
we use Google Fi, just go back from France and Spain walking the Camino de Santiago (500 mile pilgrimage) and it worked great. Our pricing seems different than yours though; $10.00 per gb up to 10 gb then free after that but at 30 gb (15 per person) they throttle the speed down.
I love all your videos. So glad to see dreams coming true for such nice people. We are going to give our daughter (in her 20's) a Garmin InReach. She likes to travel the world during her vacations sometimes by herself. And we want peace of mind !
Whats up jason & nikki. be watching this vlogg again, to try to understand some of technical, technology,of how you travel using internet and are able to vlogg to us weekly. i find your channel so valuable when it comes down to learning either how to fly a drone, correctly, to your wonderful videography.. to diving, hiking, and yes ..sailing, i want to learn as much as i can! So that being said my wonderful compadre/comadre, you inspire me to pack up my trouble's and just go into the free world, with internet connectivity and live. # responsibly & calculated of course! see you guys next vlogg, big luv. xx
as an airline pilot I'm using pokefi, cost initially 100 euros and comes with 5gb. then 15usd per 5gb, works mostly everywhere in the world.
This is the kind of stuff that puts you at the top of the Sailing (or RV'ing) channel pile. So informative. And hey, the sailin aint too bad either!
Great video! So much information that you have experience with. I will watch it several more times. We RV across the US and struggle with campground WiFi. We boost for cellular data is a big help.
You guys are the best.
THANKS for all the good information. My wife and I plan to buy a boat and set off cruising soon. This answers a LOT of questions we had about staying "connected". Excellent, informative video. Gracias!!!
So glad it was helpful! That's the kind of feedback that keeps us motivated.
Send drone up, then you both back flip off the dinghy for a bit of snorkeling. You 2 are so awesome! 😍💕❤️ Underwater time lapse of the fishies in the coral at 1:17 = so cool! 🐠🧜♀️🐟
Hey guys...there is (will be) an option even though it's not available as yet. Supposedly it's in the works and will be Satellite based.
Well that does sound exciting...
Looking forward to it. Any information I've seen on it so far keep pushing the date out to like 2027 for global coverage. 2020 would be great.
Perfect timing for this info. I will check into the cell booster for my seastead. Thanks guys.
A most excellent and informative episode. You guys are a couple of closet nerds; thank God. You've basically answered every single question I've had roaming around in my head about staying connected. Thanks!
Great video, very informative. I loved your RV videos but You have stepped up your sailing videos to another level with all the great information. The underwater photography is my favorite of your adventures
Thanks for he info!
Thanks for this and all your videos. I am addicted and am binging them from two separate start points.
So professional and personable simultaneously. You two are hard to beat in so many ways. Content speaks for itself, always interesting. Thanks for escaping so I can vicariously join in. Fair winds
Alternative to satellite phone is Aloha net over SSB radio. This covered on SV Delos a few months back. Not past, but you can get messages out and data in.
This is extremely helpful to a new boater like me. Thanks so much!
Internet and phone service here on Cape Verde Africa is the best so far on my travels. 50 cents buys you a SIM card and a local phone number. Then you buy the $12 plan which gives you 8GB, 15 min. International calls as well as free local calls and SMS. This is Africa! Love it here discovering the 10 island archipiélago on my sailboat Galopin.
Can't Wait for fast and Cheap internet again :)
Love your explanations on these questions that all that think about sailing have. Thank You
Thanks for the the practical review. I am looking to set up my yacht for data access for cruising around the world and have heard of all the solutions you talked about. It is great to hear from someone using them that they actually work and also the great tips on their limitations. Found it an informative video with the detail I wanted to know. Thank you. Have only just discovered you and off to investigate your blog for more planning information for my cruise. Thank you
Awesome! We love getting feedback like this. Glad you found it useful.
Thanks for explaining that. I'm looking at Cell phones right now and it's a really dark area for me. I might be living in a Wall-Tent soon so learning how to do connections will help. I'm looking at the Cell Phones because I'm getting a Camera that works through the Cell Phone with WiFi. That will open the door to posting a video more than once a day.
Nice change of pace and to have the informative video format. Good chob!! :P
Another awesome video! You guys do this type of video better than anyone else. I've been on Google Project Fi for 6 months... Love it
You are the best editing geniuses....the best . I love the parts filming the filmer
I guess the days of ‘message in a bottle’ are over!
Great detailed overview of options . Thanks Warren
That was a very good and informative video. I’ve always wondered about your capabilities to send and receive data when you are at sea or in remote locations. And now I know !
It’s awesome you are able to eventually find places to post your videos. My Sunday’s just wouldn’t be the same without them !
Please keep doing whatever it takes to keep us landlocked followers up to date of your adventures...
Wynns, AWESOME video. I was doing research and you all nailed it! Your video has been for me the very very best that I could find in the internet. I wish you well and please keep those videos coming. I'll definitely browse more videos in your youtube channel... Regards, Juan
I do a lot of international travel to some sketchy areas, and the google fi service is hands down the best deal I've found. I'm always looking for options/alternatives though - thanks for the details on how you go about connecting to the world from around the world!
Very well put together. The best editing and information display I have seen so far. Thank you so much!!
Just a thought... we have been in some remote places that didn’t even have a restaurant or cars but the local school building had pretty good service and they were more than willing to share. That was only having a few tacos and drinks to share in exchange.
Love the information you guys share.
Thanks for sharing some thoughts and ideas. Trying to think of all the options before heading out this fall to the Caribbean.
We've been using GoogleFi as our cell service provider for over a year now. Even as land-bound non-travelers, it works out to be a great deal.
Great video. I use the Garmin on my motorcycle trips. It comes in handy especially when I am riding out of cell phone range.
Great video, loved loved the diving. Thanks for explaining the internet, but I have a great idea, Singa needs his own camera for his videos. Lol. Love him 😽😽
Yea that would be a great video since cats sleep 20 hours out of 24.
Yawn.
Excellent Video! I ordered my Google Fi sims lol
Wow, those prices are basically in line with Canadian prices for data...
Very tech savvy people , much of this video went over my head as a senior , but I can post emojis 🤔😉👀👍
The important thing is that our generation knows how to use it so we can all bring you cool sailing videos!
We are in the same boat. 🤣😂😊😍
Sorry to be a negative nancy, but your emojis don't work in youtube comments :D
@@ihmesekoilua Are you the TH-cam Police? I'm not a fan of emojis, but that's me. Do what you like as long as it doesn't hurt some one else or hurt their feelings unnecessarily. Cheers!
@@tubbysailor I am, I carry a badge and a virtual baton. No, I was just pointing out that there was a technical issue with his emojis, nothing else. Actually, they seem to work now so it may have just been me.
Project Fi from Google has been a game changer for us. Although we are now land based, it works seamlessly through Europe and UK for an amazing price.
your "Gear We Use and Love" is fantastic. I continually buy stuff to upgrade my boat and very much appreciate the info. Very thorough and "Shiz". Thank you!
Very interesting! I will have to watch it twice to grasp it fully 😀
Well done! Lots of issues that a lot of we followers probably don't consider. or simply just take for granted. Personally, I appreciate any video that you guys up load regarding your adventures. I am sure I would put up with slow internet just to be in the places you have visited (lol). Thanks for sharing and please, keep up the great work!
Thanks! And you are correct, the slow internet seems a fair trade for the location. ;)
Really surprised you didn’t mention winlink or sail mail. I’ve used winlink for years for free email, and extensive weather info.
One of the best video's you have posted. Very informative and useful for many in the most efficient manner possible. T/Y so much for all you share
Very informative. Some of those things we wonder about. Different ballgame just 20 years ago.
Really great video. You made the options very clear. Thx!! Loved Singah the "catillite" super cute option.
Thank you for explaining how you guys stayed connected. I LOVE my Sundays (besides Football)
You two are awesome. How have you learnt to hold your breath and go so deep. I panic going 5ft down for 20 seconds. LOL , so amazed how you do that. Also the filming was out of this world as usual. . You both have a fantastic life, that many of us are jealous of. You both deserve it big time.
Love my google Fi for international data. Super useful and very reasonably priced.
love your show, love your attitude. love from MISSISSIPPI
HI nikki & jason, or bonjour i believe is the correct greeting term for french polynesia.Watched the vlogg again, lots better second time round. double thumbs up, hope it counts. you guys are amazing. safe travels. big luv. xx
Wow ! It took me for ever to read all those comments ! That is amazing ! It must mean that you's are doing something right ! Cheers !
LOL.
Wow kids! My age is showing when you try to explain all of those communication device options. I'd have to travel with someone a lot younger in order to keep family/friends on top of our travels. BTW, Singa is a real want to be star, with all of the prancing in front of the camera during this taping. Quite vocal as well. Love it!
Better and better..y’all know how to live life..keep up the great work no fun!!hi from east Texas..
