  • Follow along with former Nike, Jordan, and Converse designer, Michael DiTullo as he walks you through how to sketch a shoe in proportion and in perspective on an iPad Pro using an Apple Pencil and the Procreate App. Michael breaks down why it is important to sketch in proportion, walks you through same basic anatomy of a sneaker, and then talks you through a time lapse of one of his own sketches.

Love this Vid! as an ex running store employee and a third year Industrial design student nothing would frustrate me more than when the footwear companies would include digital sketch renders as product images in their catalogues for the upcoming season. Worst of all it was a stylized profile view.... how are you supposed to buy from that? Long story short this video is music to my ears! Much love from Australia.

Glad you enjoyed it! One of my mentors was D’Wayne Edwards when I was a designer in the Jordan brand. He would not even review a sketch of it was not in the proper proportions. So I learned quickly to get it right… or at least realistically in the zone of being right. As I designer I feel that is the challenge, to make it all work visually while not cheating the proportions.

Is it expensive to get a shoe produced ,especially the sole plate original. Please let me know. Thanks Paul

yes, it is very expensive to bring a totally new shoe to market. I typically advice start ups shipping their first shoe to budget $500k for design development, tooling, initial MOQ production, shipping, warehousing, marketing, building out .com and selling.
