Welcome back! So I've done a HYROX, and I did several years of CrossFit before that. I will say that the average CrossFitter is NOT prepared for HYROX, in that it's predominantly running, and an amount of running that's way more than you'd ever get programmed at a CrossFit affiliate. The running was by far the place where I could've improved my overall HYROX time the most. Agree on how HYROX isn't so much a "community" - at least for now. More and more "Hybrid" focussed gyms are popping up that do classes with HYROX in mind. We've had one HYROX event in Cape Town so far, with no future dates announced yet, so you can end up spending more time "training for the thing" than actually "doing the thing". Our HYROX event was incredibly well-run and smooth, which is a testament to the formula the company's put together, sort of like a franchise model.
Most RX and Serious Cross Fitters Train Running extensively. Anyone that knows much about CrossFit knows that a great Running Program and also Swimming will drastically improve your CrossFit. I guess its probably more about what your definition of an Average Cross Fitter is. Average to me would be Intermediate from mid level working towards Rx. with about 4-5 yrs experience. I believe the Average Cross Fitter could handle a Hyrox comp. as they train HIT all the time and have many WODs with Rnds of Running and resistance type mvmts.
Thanks for that - definitely a different definition of “Average” from what I’ve seen in a few boxes. Usually it’s people who train 3 times a week who are always cracking jokes about how much they hate running and do anything to avoid it. However, most CrossFit WODs don’t go past the 45 minute mark (to accommodate for 15 minutes of warmup in the 1 hour class slot). Your time under tension/effort in a HYROX (unless you’re elite) is going to 60 minutes to 90 minutes, which I’m not sure a lot of CrossFitters will be used to. It’s a lot of staying in a lower “zone” heart rate wise compared to a WOD where it’s often high intensity.
Great video. CrossFit is a methodology and philosophy, Hyrox is a bloody fun event to aim for that can fit in pretty well with CrossFit programming. I’m also gonna say that it’s a healthier event than the CrossFit Open. You come away slightly sore everywhere, tired and completely pumped… instead of a totally messed up posterior chain and can’t move properly for days
Glad you had a nice break, happy your back!!! ❤ I agree about Hyrox, I’ve done spartan racing and I think they are similar but instead of obstacles it’s stations (that stay the same)
TFFT. The title worried me.. so @53 I've been doing crossfit the last 3 months [target demographic for who should be doing it] its hard and I'm sore all the time but the community part you and others have preached about is legit [welcoming, friendly and supportive] I haven't finished a wod yet [lingo down] even though I scale the crap out of it.. but feeling like the HWPO is true. I like the elite Hyrox it's well covered and over in around 60 minutes.. the other local ones I've seen or community events look like a bit of a shambles, so many people on the course, etc, but can be improved.. Welcome back!
No need to compare them at all.! It’s all just fitness and they both present opportunities for people to express what they have achieved. I love your Hyrox self confidence and look forward to your debriefing especially how your runs felt after the sled push and burpee broad jumps 😂🎉
That’s actually really true 👌. Oh don’t worry, I have a healthy level of nerves about next weekend haha, I think I’m going to be pleasantly surprised in the worst way 😂
Your WOD didn't have any Running in it . Thats the main part of Hyrox Event. The other mvmts are just Working under the Load Effect of the Running, it will get you every time. I guess you can break it down into The Mvmts and the running separate hybrid training, but you also have to Train for what you're actually going to have to do Comp day.
Absolutely agree 👌. I had just finished a half marathon that weekend, so wanted to take a break from running and just touch all the movements in this session. I definitely have not done enough compromised running in the lead up to this event though, and expecting to get my arse kicked for sure hahaha
Let’s get some new merch going brodie!!! That original black tee is fire 🔥!!! Still rock it all the time around the world!! Love from Alberta, Canada!!
You touched on something these that should be and should have been stressed a lot more in the last probably 10 years. CrossFit is not the CrossFit games it’s what you can do every day things that you can realistically achieve , the CrossFit games is very different from that.. If you (CrossFit community) want to save CrossFit then that’s one of the things that must! Happen.
I felt that I said that before but ... good to see you again ! ;) Happy for you that you're chasing your dreams! And great point on Hyrox, I totally agree! I love Hyrox, love the race and love that I have incorporated running into my.. crossfit program :D after last Rogue competition, together with my friends, we came to same conclusion that still crossfit is THE thing! All the best for your next race! :)
I think the problem is people comparing them in the first place. Its not trying to be crossfit hence the 1000 meters of basically sprinting your doing before each station which there are 8 total which takes it in a whole other direction. If you are not a strong runner its going to be a really long day for you. Not you im talking people in general. It is the great equalizer. Its hard to compare apples to orange’s especially when almost all crossfitters are doing it as doubles then saying it was easier than they thought. In saying that I think its like wrestling if you have a strong crossfit background then bring your running up you would smash it.
The problem with your comparison is thinking of Hyrox as only an event and thinking of "CrossFit" as a lifestyle. The community, inspiration, goals, nutrition improvement, etc can all be found in any recreational activity. That is not unique to CrossFit. Hell, people get all of those things from pickleball now a days. The better comparison would be training and completing the CrossFit open (a mass participation event) to training and competing in a Hyrox event.
Nah, pickleball doesn't have a home body that educates about holistic fitness and wellbeing. Neither does Hyrox really. There may be influencers in the spaces that do, but the blueprint is a take on CrossFit's. Open vs Hyrox might be a better comparison, but that feeds into Wykie's points, of Hyrox just being a slither of what CrossFit is (however, the CF Open still holds the Trump card of having a massive variation in movements/ tests, whereas Hyrox does not change).
@@PrimalPetersen You clearly have never been around other fitness groups outside of CrossFit then. I've known people that play pickleball 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. All of their friends play pickleball. They lose weight/get healthier because of the activity. Follow and watch pro tournaments. Travel and play in smaller style tournaments. That sounds exactly like...CrossFit. Something isn't just "CrossFit" because you say it is. CrossFit didn't invent people doing cross training. Athletes have used mixed modality training to improve in sport for 100 years. What CrossFit HQ did was standardize mixed modality training into benchmark workouts and mass group competition. The only thing that is officially CrossFit is the CrossFit open and extended season. Everything else is simply exercise like every other person that attends a gym or does outdoor exercise. If a choose to do a workout in my garage that includes strength work of bench press and pull-ups, then a conditioning work of rowing and spin bike that isn't "CrossFit" just because you were introduced to those movements via CrossFit.
Wykie where you been bro??!! C'mon let's face it, HYROX is the egg and spoon race compared to crossfit. Let them have their fun in the sun - and training in our boxes until the next "new craze" comes along.
commenting on every new video until i get pinned (post the hole in one stuff)
Pinned 👌. Good call, will try to include some of the hole in one challenge here too
I’m here for it. Someone has to leave him another ball with his name on it please 🙏🏻

Nice to have you back. Yea fully agree with you. Hyrox is just an event. But it’s early days and they still have a lot of growing to do.
Glad you had a nice break, happy your back!!! ❤

Let’s get some new merch going brodie!!! That original black tee is fire 🔥!!! Still rock it all the time around the world!! Love from Alberta, Canada!!
Wish Tia was doing the individual version and set a world record. Would be a very “Tia” thing to do in the CrossFit offseason 💪🏼
I know right haha, hopefully she goes on to do a individual after this one 🤞
Good to see you back 👊
Think CrossFit needs to have its own set event to generate a living . Open is a dead concept people want a live event .

Haha yes I’m sure you have 😅. I’m exactly the same, really enjoying more regular running alongside CrossFit 👌
Good to see you again my friend
Couldn't get more aussie than c u next Tuesday! 😅😅😅
Great comparison

Nice, I like this mate. Agree 👍
I meant 1 KM between stations my bad
“It’s CrossFit that’s allowing me to do Hyrox” well said!! Love the video brother!
Thanks bro, appreciate ya!

Haha, the goal is to stay steady from here on it! 🙏👊

Oh and good luck in Melbourne
well said, hyrox is an event. nothing more.
