This was a challenging hike! We definitely were not expecting so much rain, but glad we were prepared for the elements. If you have any questions about hiring a guide for this, let us know!
Congratulations ! I did it too, recently, in the beginning of december 2023. I was not very well prepared and...I had a book in my backpack during the first day ! I didn't know about it ! Didn't sleep at all in the tent either...But, the food was great and the porters impressed me a lot. The last part to the summit was a nightmare. I had to stop and catch my breath 1000 times. But I did it. Going down was a lot easier and faster even if the legs were in fire and one foot was hurting. I don't think I'll do it again but I am so proud now ! I feel I can do anything I want ! P.S: the next morning, after a good night of sleep, I enjoyed the hotel pool and the I went for a massage ! :)
What was the weather like in December? Hopefully the book wasn't too heavy in your pack. It was hard to sleep on night one with the anticipation of the summit coming up such early morning. The food was so good and definitely overate for many of the meals. Hard to eat that much when you have to pick up and go again right after a meal haha. Agreed the downhills were a thigh burner. It is definitely a one and done for us. It was very challenging. We thought the 2nd days to the summit and then to our campsite traversing past the lake was the most challenging. We were soaked and exhausted. Thanks for sharing your experience! You should be proud of your efforts. The post hike pool time and massage sounds lovely.
Just small correction guys, Rinjani is the second tallest volcanic peak, after Kerinci in Sumatra, but there's a couple peak in Papua that exceeds over 4,000 meters. But overall a great content, enjoy your journey guys 👍🏼
Thanks for that Ahmadin. Glad you enjoyed the video. We heard the fact from our guide and also read mixed information online. Do you live in Indonesia? If so, beautiful country and nice people!
What a hike! Still on my list. Mountain hike is quite a crowd favorite here so I guess it'll be better to avoid holiday season for more quiet and less trash lol
Glad you like the power strip and adapter. It’s one of the things we have found the most helpful especially when we need to charge multiple things at one time. If also has a USB and USB-C plugs which is nice. Here is the link to the adapter or you can find it in the video description: amzn.to/42FgzFs
*_Hello Helen..., Greetings to me Rudy Tutorial Outdoor from Indonesia, I enjoyed watching your video hiking to Mount Rinjani, yes for us mountaineers in Indonesia too Mount Rinjani is our favorite mountain target, and of course Helen too made visits to several destinations in Bali, I hope your trip will be memorable_* 👍
Hello!! Glad you enjoyed watching. Mount Rinjani was a great hike and we really enjoyed it. It was a nice trip! We hope to go back to Indonesia in the future to climb more mountains!🥾
@@HelenandTimTravel There are still many mountains that are worthy of a friend of nature to climb, I'm waiting for the arrival of my friend of nature 👌👍
Many underestimate Rinjani. But once they did summit attack then they just knew how challenging it is 😂 Your posting really make me miss Rinjani.. The saddest thing is so many trash started from post 3, basecamp before summit, otw down to the lake and around the lake literally trash everywhere 😭
Definitely a tough hike! Very challenging and rewarding. We enjoyed our time on Rinjani. There was a lot of trash just before the summit and around the lake, which made us sad and didn’t want to stay long. Our guide said once or twice a year the guide groups try to clean things up
You will find that the second highest "Peak" in Indonesia is Sumantri and the highest is Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) where you could actually see snow, both are in Papua. Rinjani IS the second highest volcano, but as far as "Peak" goes, both above are a lot higher.
Great video! I’m actually headed to Mount Rinjani next week! Would you mind sharing what you packed and if there’s anything you recommend bringing or not bringing? Thanks!
Awesome! We are happy to hear you’re heading out that way. We had a good time. We recently posted a daypack hiking video which may be helpful. Not sure if you’re doing a 2, 3 or 4 day. On the 3 day, we each brought a puff jacket, rain jacket, a base layer, a long sleeved sun shirt, 2 t-shirts, 2 hiking pants (in case it rains and one gets wet), extra hiking socks, hiking shoes, and sandals to wear when you hang out at night. A hat and sunscreen is helpful, it gets super hot. Definitely pack a beanie and gloves because it can get chilly when the rain or fog rolls into upper elevation or at night. We brought headlamps since we started our summit at 2pm. If you’re going with a guide, they should also provide a packing list. If not, we are happy to email the one we got. You can always email hello@helenandtimtravel.com
It sucks it was cloudy at the summit but the views throughout the journey looked amazing! We laughed when you said that you need 2 days at the beach after, we would need a lot longer than 2 days. 😂 The food they made for you looked delicious. I can’t believe the porters are wearing sandals! 😮 Great video!
Thanks! We were bummed about the summit. But always worth the climb for the experience. It was a tough hike. The food was amazing. Seriously we can’t believe they wore sandals. Every time we would say we were tired or hot…we would just think of the porters. They are the champions. Lots of beach time after for sure! Hope you both are doing well
Amazing!!! My partner and I will be traveling soon to Indonesia and we’re planning to do the climb as well. Would you guys mind sharing the name of the accomodation in Senaru before the trekking?! Loved the views ❤ Thanks for all the information!!! Very much appreciated 😊
That’s exciting! You two are going to have a blast climbing Mount Rinjani. The accommodations for Senaru were booked by our trekking company, Hajar Trekking, but they booked the accommodations with Pondok Senaru Resort: maps.app.goo.gl/FR7CEAqhqUF3DYMp6?g_st=ic
How would you rate the difficulty of this hike? Was it harder than Jade Mountain. I climbed Mt Batur which has a elevation of 1717m which was challenging with the volcanic ash but it looks like Jade Mountain is more gradual and mostly friendlier surface to walk on but would be good to hear your opinion as I'll be staying in Taiwan for a few months and the idea of going up Jade Mountain appeals to me.
Hello Alan! Excited you are considering the Mount Jade climb! We didn’t think Jade mountain was overall not too difficult of a hike. It’s a steady and gradual incline most of the way. The most difficult part is the last 500 feet after Paiyun lodge. The trail is well established and maintainers. We recommend this hike! We found weather the most temperamental. It down poured on the way out, so we recommend packing a rain jacket. Would recommend trying to submit your permit info sooner than later, especially if you’re a visitor since there are certain number permits allocated for foreigners. There are other mountain summits like Qilai mountain much more difficult. Here is a video from that hike th-cam.com/video/O_VUPeFlmIE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=40zGiWiQNemPNyN6
Ahhh I'm doing this trek at the end of the month!! So excited! You captured everything so well! May I ask the hotel where you stayed for the one night in Senaru and the days in Uluwatu?
That's awesome! We enjoyed it though it was humid and long hiking days. Just love Lombok and the raw beauty compared to other parts like Bali. The accommodations for Senaru were booked by our trekking company, Hajar Trekking. They booked the accommodations with Pondok Senaru Resort: maps.app.goo.gl/FR7CEAqhqUF3DYMp6?g_st=ic In Uluwatu, we stayed in Segredo Uluwatu. It was a bit overpriced for Bali, but the location was great and walking distance to the beach, restaurants and shops. You can see the review we left there. There is a bar next door until 11:30 pm that was a bit loud a few days we stayed there. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay! www.booking.com/Share-v77ife
We have the Arcteryx Atom LT jackets. They were perfect for Rinjani since we had a base layer underneath. We wear our Atom LT jackets more than any of our jackets when climbing. We also have the Arcteryx Cerium down for higher elevation and colder climates. We have our full gear list at helenandtimtravel.com/hiking-gear-list REI is doing 20% full priced items through 5/29/23 May be a good spot to look at the Atom LT🤙🏽🥾
You’re welcome! If you end up getting it, let us know what you think after you test it out a few times. We bring that jacket everywhere and even wear it around at home in the PNW
