I loved this vacuum at first, but just ran into this very problem. Thank you SO much for taking the time to help us all out! Annoying... but effective. Thanks again!
Ariana, Many thanks to you for going the extra couple of miles to figure this out. I could barely vacuum one room. Though I am very disappointed with this vacuum cleaner, thank you for giving me one good reason not to trash it, and have to count my losses.
I bought this vac because I’ve loved Hoover’s since the mid 80’s. The first Wind Tunnel never was as good as my original old striped one in the 80’s. That thing was the beat vac in the world. It could pick up absolutely everything with NO clogs-not ever. I paid for a new impeller and replaced it myself after about 10 years and, it was good as new. I never had to do more than that other than the easy maintenance of changing a belt, replacing the bag, turning it upside down and removing things from the brush on RARE occasions. It was amazing. I can’t figure out why they went downhill or if it is just the fact that it’s bagless?? Anyway, thank you SO much! I already took mine apart as much as I could see to and removed not one, but a TON of clogs-still overheats. I was already looking at buying a mew one but am now about to go take it apart again, as you have shown additional parts that I need to check. Thanks!!!!!
My Grandparents had one of those heavy metal Hoover (sled) (correction- Electrolux) vacuums in their cabin, probably from the 1930s. That thing was built like a tank and sucked up dirt like a junkyard magnet. Never overheated, only needed to replace paper filters. Today's "improved" version - not very impressive.
Thank you so much for making this video I've had this vacuum for 5 years and I never had no problems till now. Thank you my vacuum is working good like new again.
you know this is a good video and it got me heading down the road to taking apart the machine including brush and dirt pickup area. After performing your procedure I cleaned around the brush and there was a combined grapefruit size clump of hair blocking the input and surrounding area. The brush was wrapped with string and hair. This thing hides dirt and hair everywhere and like a dimwit, i dumped my last one, that was exactly like this one [from COSTCO]. All it needed was a little TLC. About a 1 hour job at a leisurely pace.
I have TWO of the red versions of this vac. The first, the roller bar wore out. It is sitting upstairs waiting for me to service it. The replacement for that lead me to this video..... so I'll be back to let you know if my vacuum comes back on after listening to your advice!!! Off to clean my vacuum, before cleaning lol
Thank you.... was about to chuck mine.... but your video might must save me $ 100 - $ 200 not having to buy new one... thank you for sharing. Waiting for everything to dry up then will power it up tomorrow.
Hi - thanks for the video... BUT, I learned more about mine was overheating and shutting off. I watched a video from Ian from Hoover. My problem was in my hose which I pushed huge junk out with a broom handle. Shocking what was in there including a pencil. Then, I undid one screw to remove the another part of tube where the long tube feeds into. This was also jammed full like a birds nest. Check it out. I felt so proud I fixed it thanks to you and IAN❤️
I had checked the hose and it was clear. I can hear the difference in pitch when a vacuum starts to have a clog somewhere, which comes in handy. :) I threw this vacuum out years ago and bought a Shark which is SO MUCH EASIER to clean out! And when mine developed an electrical intermittency 4 years into the 5 year warranty, they sent us a whole new vacuum. I am NEVER buying one of these Hoovers ever again.
You have to clean the hose and the button hose that sucks the dirt. Stick something through it make sure it’s clean. I’ve been using mine for about 5 years now and only cleaned it thoroughly 3 times and it’s working fine. Yeah take both filters out and smack them against something try not to break it. Also after that wash them with hot water and soft filter u can squeeze them and let them dry before putting it back. It should work and last u long time. Any vacuum will eventually get clogged and they have sensor that will shut it off so that motor doesn’t get over heated and melt. Hope it helps!
A lot of consumer vacuums these days aren’t built like they used to be many years ago and that’s why I tell everyone to buy a Kirby or a Workhorse cyclonic vacuum. Kirby’s are expensive but last for a few decades and don’t need as much maintenance as a bagless vacuum since they are bagged and the belt can be replaced with no tools whatsoever. The Workhorse cyclonic is a bit more expensive than most consumer vacuums since it’s essentially a commercial vacuum but the design is unchanged from the Amway CMS 1000/Cleartrak which dates back to the mid 80’s and can still be bought in the $300 to $400 range from a company by the name of WMJ Refurbish in Michigan. Nice thing about the Workhorse cyclonic is you can easily remove the cyclone assembly for cleaning and the filters are on the back for ease of cleaning and replacing.
Also check the hose that is permanently attached to the back of the unit. Mine had a whole popsicle stick in it, which had subsequently trapped a small whig's worth of hair. There's also a small filter in a drawer labeled "HEPA" that is under the cord spooler.
This was the first time I purchased a vacuum that was this expensive🌼 I should have done it sooner. The suction is fantastic and you can feel it pulling at the dirt. We love everything about it.
Thank you! I have a pet and a grand daughter with hair to her waist. I’ve only used mine maybe 4 times and it shut off. I’m so disgusted that I have wasted my hard earned money on this machine! I should have stuck with Bissell. I have had mine for 12 years and still no problems but though I’d treat myself to a new machine. Gonna go get my Bissell out and finish the job!
Omg yes i did and here for the same reason. My worked for a while before it started doing it. I just replaced the belt and it still shut off. I took it apart as you did and realized the top filter was packed with dust.
With ours I had to go deeper, removing the screws and taking apart the little wind tunnel assembly, which was totally clogged with fine dust, lint, etc. This was NOT difficult but is rarely showcased in videos or by Hoover. The Vac went from almost unusable to new suction.
Thank you for the video, going to try this now. How long does the motor take to reset usually, after it shuts down, or is there a physical button on it ? Thanks
I don't think I should have to rebuild my vacuum after 2 or 3 times of using it! It is a big pain in the butt and I never would have bought it had I known. Waste of money!
This is why I tell everyone to get a Kirby or a Workhorse cyclonic vacuum. Yes, Kirby’s are expensive but usually will last many years before anything breaks and are fairly easy to maintain since they have no filters to deal with and belts can easily be replaced since it requires no tools whatsoever. Peggy Green soak it in a bucket of hot water with dish soap for a while. Then rinse it out with a hose or tub spout. If dish soap doesn't do it then pour baking soda down it and then pour distilled vinegar behind it and repeat, starting from both ends several times. If that doesn't get it try using a weak drain cleaner instead of water and soap, (not the strongest stuff they have, the cheap stuff) and then let it soak for just a couple minutes and pull it out and rinse with water. Wear gloves and safety glasses for the drain cleaner. Beware the drain cleaner may dissolve the hose if left soaking too long. Best of luck.
Pull the cord all the way out and latch it, leave it out while using it so the motor has breathing room. I've had mine for 6 months and never had it shut off or stop sucking. Some people just don't know everything requires regular maintenance..
M C an update on mine? I've never had mine shut off from over heating or anything for that matter. Just keep it clean and use the right carpet setting, and I pull the cord all the way out cuz that's where the filtered air is dispersed. That way it has more breathing room.
I always pulled the cord out all the way. Maybe yours is a newer design. Mind is several years old now. I quit using it and bought a Shark, which is SO MUCH EASIER TO CLEAN and maintain. I have had zero issues with the shark.
My Shark worked perfectly for 4 years, then developed some kind of electrical intermittency in the brushroll portion. Lol Since I've had it, it's been nothing but problems, with the most recent issue being that it spontaneously shuts off in the middle of using it.

And so, how does cleaning it solve an electrical issue??? All you talked about was cleaning and dismantling the canister. Not clear at all.....did I miss something?
Thank you! You figure a name like Hoover, which has been around for such a long time would sell a better vacuum (even though the price was reasonable, it shouldn't be a cheap piece of *@). Oh, well - live and learn.Again thank you for sharing what you did = very grateful here!
I got a shark at costco a couple years ago and never had an issue with it. I can vacuum my whole house and it never overheats. It's much easier to empty/clean also, and you can get spare filters for cheap on amazon.
Not a huge fan of this vacuum either. It should be re-designed such that you don't have to unscrew this entire canister assembly to clean it--because you do have to clean it frequently. However, my indicator hasn't come on as frequently as you're describing solely due to a dirty canister. You may want to check the hose for another obstruction. They tend to form at the base where the hose connects to the vacuum (i.e. opposite end of where you insert the attachments).
Yes, but I had done all those things already. Thing was 100% clean according to the manufacturer's suggestions, and it was still having issues. I don't miss this piece of junk at all.

You not cleaning it right probably. You cleaning it just enough to get some air through and when it fills up it overheats and shuts off. I left in comment how to clean it so it lasts u longer.
The hose was the problem. Debris traps in the bend, right before that L tube, that feeds the canister. This is the worst design I've ever seen. I've got a decade older vacuum (different brand), that lets you valve switch from the floor to the hose. This crapper's floor setting sucks *THROUGH* the entire length of the hose, then into the canister (rather than straight from the floor into the cannister, like my decade older model). This Hoover design is so bad, on so many fronts. I got this Hoover for free though, basically brand new, a few years back (It was used a few months, before overheating issues). The cord got quite hot (the rolled up part) during overheating events - that design is *BAD* as well (spring-wrapping around/above the motor/heating element).
Hoover is a piece of shit. Brand new vacuum, worked for a month now it's overheating. I've taken it apart, cleaned every filter and hole.....still not working right.
Seriously. I finally had some room in my trash can the got this piece of crap out of my house for good. I really like my Shark vacuums now! No more Hoovers for me.
