I absolutely agree with your number one pick. Ever since I saw the original West Side Story as a child in 1961 it has always been my favorite movie of all time. Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins were the greatest representing music, lyrics and choreography. George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn were amazing as well as all of the Jets and Sharks with their dancing, tumbling and finger snapping. It was true genius. I've seen the movie at least a hundred times and the talent involved in the whole production never ceases to amaze me. Great choice for number one. The new version does not come near in comparison to the original.

Rodgers and Hammerstein were true innovators. You could just as easily have substituted "The Carousel Waltz" from Carousel for "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning". It was even more innovative in the stage version, replacing the usual opening orchestral medley from songs in the show. No words, just the music and dancers introducing us to the small New England town.
Leonard Bernstein was another true innovator. Coming from the orchestral side of music, his Candide Overture is brilliant, and we can see the overlap with Rodgers' Carousel opening and the great orchestral works, of Beethoven, for instance. It's good you included "New York, New York".
My personal favorite opening number is "I Hope I Get It". The unfortunate movie version of "A Chorus Line" did its best to overwhelm the best parts of the wonderful stage version, starting with this number. The very austere staging of the play makes us focus on the dancers who are the heart and soul of Broadway musicals. The dancers, while doing their best to look good, they don't overdress, for instance. I could go on about the awful things Richard Attenborough did to the show, but I'm not up for an essay. I'll just send hate toward him for taking "What I Did For Love" from Diana Morales! The film should have been done by a Broadway director, not a British naturalist.

When I saw “Sound of Music” and the incomparable Julie Andrews in #2 I was wondering who got the top spot, and it was not a disappointment. The original “West Side Story” prologue is so powerful in its storytelling using just music (superb) and dance (spellbinding). Just filming that prologue took so much time, effort and money during the production that it is no wonder how spectacular the end result was and why we do not get to see anything like it since then.

I absolutely love On The Town, and I'm so thrilled it made the list, but technically the first song is sung by the dock worker: "I feel like I'm not out of bed yet"... maybe it doesn't count because it's a fragment/too short? My flatmate and I did our own list (available on my channel) which was objective with criteria concerning what made a good opening song, but most of them were stage musicals that hadn't graced the silver screen yet. That said, we also put Heaven On Their Minds in the same place as this list. But nothing on this list beats Heathers' song Beautiful. It sets the tone, backdrop, motivation and has more setup that even the source material movie missed out, as well as introducing almost every important character (the only missing character presumably hasn't arrived yet).

The dancers in "A Chorus Line" weren't trying to make it big. They were trying to get chorus roles where they would not really be seen. That's the real heart of the Broadway "gypsy" (sorry, I know that's now considered a slur, but it wasn't at the time of the movie.) The dancers are putting their blood, sweat and tears on the line for a nameless part.

Spot on for most, but Grease and A Chorus Line(the movie version) can be left off of any best musical list (please!...they're not as good as you seem to think). Replace them with one of these, that didn't even make it to honourable mention:
    #3
"On Broadway" (George Benson): All that Jazz (although Ben Vereen's closing rendition of "Bye Bye Love" would win if it didn't appear at the end)
Beats the hell out "I hope I get it" in similarly themed choreography.
    #2
"Tradition": Fiddler on the Roof. (Ironically, not the original opening number)
    #1
Goodbye Eddie, Goodbye: Phantom of the Paraside (seriously, how did you miss this one !?!?!?) :
    "We'll remember you forever Eddie
Through the sacrifice you made we can't believe the price you paid
    For love...
Little Eddie Mitty born in Jersey City
Started singin' when he was five
Never knew his father mother didn't bother
To catch his last name fast as he came
    He was off and flying
    Times were really trying
    Eddie and his mother alone
Soon another mister soon a baby sister
Mama kept swingin' and Eddie kept singin' [...]"
Coulda been #1...oh wait no, you got that one absoilutely correct with the Jet/Shark song.
But "Phantom of the Paradise" should have been in the list somewhere. I defines musical openings and remains Brian DePalma's crowning achievement (a premiere masterpiece from the (then) rookie director).
