I've run against a few newer M3's in my '09 is350 F-Sport. Off the line I can keep up for a bit - overall the BMW is always a little faster, but they actually run together pretty nicely. With intake/exhaust/headers/dropped suspension, and carbon fiber wheels I'd guess I've shaved 50lb and have about 350hp. I think it's also geared lower than the BMW, so off the line with TC off, it's damn fast.

A 2010 IS350 does not cost 40K (nor was it worth that much at the time of your post). Besides which, you cannot compare the cost of a 3-year old car to that of a 11-year-old car. Even when the IS350 hit retail in 2005, the E46 M3 was still for sale and was >30% more expensive with ~5-10% more performance, inferior build quality, and inferior interior amenities.
