LG Ultrawide 49-inch Curved Monitor 49WL95C-W 32:9 Realistic Review

  • The 49 inch monitor is the equivalent of 2 twenty seven inch monitors and it feels like the same visual real estate as having 3 27 inch monitors because to be honest the very ends of both sides seem just too far out of visible range because of how close I stand to it.
Here are the pros and cons. Let me start with the cons.
I thought the curve would have more of a noticeable effect but it doesn’t. It doesn’t matter though. I was concerned the curve would distort. It doesn’t. I don’t even realize the monitor is curved which I think was the intention.
The stand is the number one problem. It takes up way too much desk real estate, but I understand in order to support this monitor, it has to be large. The monitor is heavy. It does rotate and have all the motion I need so that is nice, but I think I’m going to purchase the Ergotron monitor arm as soon as I get some disposable income.
wHich brings me to the price.
This monitor is way overpriced. I paid about $1250 for the monitor (which included free shipping).
But my triple monitor setup with the stand was half the price and more viewing area.
If all things were priced the same, I’d go with the 49 inch ultrawide monitor in a heartbeat.
But if you already have triple monitors, the benefits you will gain I don’t think are worth the price.
The screen seems to be made of the same materials my previous monitors were made of.
My laptop is only able to display 3840 x 1080. My 2014 Macbook a little bit more.
I believe the max resolution is 5120 x 1440. But you have to use the displayport cable and have a graphics card that supports it.
Had I thought this through, I could have purchased a monitor the same size with the max resolution 3840 and saved about $500 but at least my investment should last me longer.
There is a speaker built into the monitor, but its not that good. I still use my Bose speakers. The speaker sounds like laptop speakers but if they were a little bigger. Not high end but not bad if you don’t have good speakers already. If I didn’t have good speakers, I would still buy good speakers. The speakers are passable but don’t match the luxury of the monitor.
The monitor has a 60 hz refresh rate. The gaming monitors have 120-160 refresh rates. I don’t even know how that impacts me. I do IT work on it and edit video. Im not a pc gamer. I have consoles like ps4 and xbox one that my wife uses more than I do.
Clicking the Maximize button which is such a habit from having triple monitors now expands the application to the entire screen.
    Here are the pros.
The 4 usb ports on my monitor along with the ports on my laptop docking station allowed me to get rid of my USB hub which allowed some cable management improvement.
    The screen is beautiful
Editing videos is so much easier and enjoyable.
Something I hadn’t anticipated and didn’t realize I needed was file management. I take tons of screenshots and photos and like to organize everything into folders, and spend a day a week doing this, and its allowed me to see so much more on the screen to sort out and select which allows me to get through the tasks of sorting so much quicker.
Once I get the Ergotron arm, I will have gained a lot of spac.e
Having one large monitor is nicer in appearance than having 3 monitors.
Every day when I walk into my office and see the screen I feel like such a superstar.
The menu is nice and easy to navigate. It even keeps track of how long your monitor has been turned on. Mine has been turned on for 315 hours already.
It has multiple monitor ports and you can have multiple inputs. So my laptop goes in one of the HDMI ports and my macbook goes into the other. I’m going to purchase the displayport cable to see if that squeezes any additional pixels. The instruction manual has a chart of all of the different combinations.
It sounds like there aren’t many pros, but I’m very happy with the screen and don’t want to go back. The only buyers remorse I have is had I realized that even my macbook couldn’t experience the full glory of the 5120 x 1440 resolution, I would have just opted for the lower resolution ultrawide monitor and saved $500 and put that towards the ergotron arm.
There are probably more specs I could give you about this, but there are other videos that show off all of that stuff, I’m trying to give you a realistic review from someone that actually purchased the item. LG didn’t sponsor this video. I forked over the hard earned cash so I’m giving you a hard earned review.
I’m happy with the monitor. If you’d like to purchase one of these I’ve placed an affiliate link in the info description of which I receive a minor commission for.
Hopefully this review was helpful. If you have any questions I’ll try and answer them in the comments.

Yes, you're paying extra money for the monitor because you're paying for the convenience of having two 27" monitors in a smaller footprint, without a bezel in between, but that's not the only benefit you're getting from the monitor. The LG 49" has a usb-c thunderbolt 3 port that can supply 85W of power to charge your laptop, it has a display port, 2 hmdi, a few usb type-A ports, etc. It has a built-in KVM switch that allows you to connect your MacBook Pro and your PC simultaneously together and control them with a single keyboard and mouse. You can drag and drop files from one computer to the other. That's something you can't do with your three separate 27" monitors without going out and buying your own external KVM switch. This display also is HDR 10 certified. I guarantee your three 27" monitors are not HDR 10 certified either.... I'm not saying HDR, or the external KVM switch, or the extra I/O ports are worth the extra money, but you have to understand how all of the features in totality make up that price tag. If you don't utilize all of the features it provides, then obviously it's a frivolous purchase for you, but if you are the type of buyer that will utilize all of the features, then it's definitely one of the first monitors of its kind, and worth the price. Obviously, with in a few years, we might see a lot more 43" and 49" ultra-wide models from several different companies, so these monitors might drop in price. But since this is a brand new design with brand new built-in features, you're going to have to pay that luxury tax.

Just for your info, I have the same monitor you got and I purchased the arm you mentioned on the video that 6 months ago. I still think hang to the wall might be better depending on the table strength to hold on arm to the center or side of the table. Even I located the arm to the closest right corner of the table, my table started to set down a bit in the centre. Get the full adjustment wall mout, are the best way to go as my suggestion.

I’ve been using this monitor for a year now and love it. I have a couple issues. Working from home, I do a lot of web sharing (Teams, Webex, Zoom) and I run into the issue where people see a compressed version of what I see when I share my screen. I’ve resolved that by changing the resolution to 1920x1080 to share. My other issue is I’d like the monitor to rise higher for best eye level viewing so I may have to spring for an ergonomic arm too.

I currently edit video on two 27” 4K monitors with FCP and am considering moving to this monitor but I’m concerned about the curve. Does the curve distort straight lines? Such as architectural photos?
Also, is it possible to share a portion of the screen when in FCP so you are only sharing the edited video instead of the timeline and other items?

Anyone who says having multiple displays is better than one large display simply hasn't had a large display before. Maybe someone out there has but I have never seen or heard of anyone go from a large display to a multi display setup, with all the pros and cons considered, it wont matter, bigger is better lol. I use PowerToys aswell to create custom layouts for my windows to get them just the right size on a 34" display, I cant wait to add a 49" to my setup. Outside of productivity, watching series and movies feels like you're in a cinema. Gaming is also so much more immersive because the screen covers your entire field of view at the right distance. The larger displays age well too, I have an Asus ROG swift pg348q, I bought it roughly 6 years ago and its not outdated, the refresh rates have improved with newer screens this size but productivity was the main reason I got it so I cant justify getting another monitor the same size just for the refresh rate.

Hi there, Thanks for sharing your realistic review on LG Ultrawide 49" monitor. It gave me a second opinion before I make a division. Can you please tell us what's your thoughts after a few months' use? Do you still like it? What would your ranking from 1-10? If you had a second chance would you buy LG or something else? You mentioned Dell 49" monitor in your video a few times. What's your opinion on Dell? Thanks!

    • @technuba
      @technuba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Killer App for me is still Video Editing. This has made video editing so much more enjoyable. And as I mentioned the File Management - being able to see so many icons on the screen in a folder to manage them has saved me tons of time.
But, Knowing what I know now, i would probably have purchased the Acer model for half the price. I'm not using the full capabilities of my LG monitor. This monitor's resolution can go farther than the Acer, but my graphics cards aren't capable of displaying it that high.
There is a comment below by Andrew Adlof that explains all of the features that i'm not using for this monitor which justify the price.
This monitor is more advanced (Thus the price) but since i'm not able to use the feature, the extra money i spent was for nothing until I acquire a new graphics card (and since i'm using a laptop, that means when i get a new computer). I also find myself still wanting a second monitor to slide applications over to and englarging, so knowing what i know now i may have purchased one of the smaller ultra wide monitors and still having more than one screen - although as i'm typing this right now on the monitor, i'm fully happy with the purchase. There are just small things i wish it did better, like for the price i paid, i hoped the materials of the display was more like a Mac Monitor. The monitor is good - i just think it is overpriced. And what i mean is - the materials the monitor is made of is just like a regular monitor, it just has a bunch of extra stuff on it. I've tried the LG software and the Powertoys software. Where would I price this monitor? I'd say $800-900.
Where this monitor absolutely shines is when i'm editing video --- being able to see a longer timeline has increased my productivity tremendously. I'm happy with the purchase, I just think i paid too much for it but if money wasn't an issue - if it was the same price as my triple monitors - i would choose this LG monitor 10 times out of 10 over the 3 monitors.
As for the Dell Monitor you asked about - i mentioned it only because it was the Dell model that I saw at the Dell World Conference in Las Vegas 2019 which let me know these monitors even exist in the first place. So that was my first impression. And while i moan about the higher price i paid and not being able to use the capabilities - whenever I do upgrade my computer, this monitor is future-proofed to be able to have the higher resolutions when I get there.
$1250 just feels too high for what I got for it. The hugeness of the screen is awesome, i love video editing with it, but it's just not as snazzy as it should be for paying $1250. For instance, when I paid $1250 for an iMac in 2011 i was able to see where all that money went into. When i paid $1800 for a MacBook Pro in 2014 I was blown away and saw why it cost so much money (although I thought the MacBook was way overpriced - but at least i was blown away) This LG 49 inch monitor is a real big regular monitor.
And since its a real big regular monitor, it should maybe cost the price of 2-3 monitors combined and add on an extra $150 for the extra bells and whistles.
But the bottom line is, i'm happy with the monitor, and i'll be using it for years to come. Since these monitors are still new and novel, people are real impressed with it when they come in my office.
It's just .... no matter how much visual real estate I get ..... it seems i always still need more of it.

I'm considering getting this monitor, I believe both the dell and LG have the same display but they have good features for productivity. I was tossing up between this and Samsung, however, I'm going to go for this (when its back in stock) mainly for two things 1) It has built in speakers, I normally use headphones but sometimes after having it on my head for so long it wears you down and I don't want speakers on my desk - just a personal preference of having a clean uncluttered desk, 2) this has poweroutput as close (some say 80, some say 85, some say 90) to power my 16" macbook pro, and again with the clean desk setup this was fairly a big thing for me. I don't game, but I do code, and video editing and this looks like its perfect. @technuba you gotta get an arm for this, that stand for the desk is too much. I'll have a smaller desk and based on some images I've seen on reddit - it makes a massive difference.

    • @ysmuse
      @ysmuse 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@technuba Thanks for the detailed information with your opinions and thoughts. You are right, $1250 is big money for a monitor like that. I am looking for more productivity than gaming. That's why I won't go for Samsung (good for a gamer) and I will choose between Dell and LG for the WFH situation since they use the same panel. While Dell offers a 3-year warranty and LG only 1 year, LG has HDR 10 features available. I am not sure how good is HDR 10 or do I need it or not.
I will wait for the Black Friday deal to see how much they can drop the price. I am using dual 24" LG monitors and I don't have any issues with them. Thanks again!

    • @technuba

Yes. For sharing situations where i need to use multiple applications and windows I connected a smaller monitor to the side on my desk and i use that to share the full screen and i drag whatever i need to share there. (on the smaller secondary monitor) If we're sharing only a single application or window, i dont need the other monitor, i use the feature in the conferencing app to "Share a Window" and i select the application.
If i had to do it again, i probably would get like a 36 inch ultra wide .... but i say that while having the 49 inch. When I edit video and when i do my file management of folders, i love this wide angle screen. But not being able to maximize still kinda stinks although i've gotten so used to manually resizing windows.

Your Mac is perfectly cable of running the screen at the native res (5120x1440). It sounds you were running this screen scaled to 3440x1080 with the HDM cable - that's why it felt the screen is not as tall as the 27inch setup. To get 5120x1440, you need a Display Port or a USB-C cable.
Dell is using the same panel as LG (panel is made by LG).

You are correct. At the time I didn’t have the right cable. I do now. And both my Mac and my Dell laptop are able to experience the full 5120 x 1440 display.

No. It's 5K in one direction only. For true 5K, you have to expand in both directions, so 4K of 3840x2160 would become 5120x 2880 or so.

That Samsung is undoubtedly better for gaming, but for production the LG is better in my opinion. The Samsung curve is too extreme for software development and the viewing angles of the Samsung VA panel is not as good as the viewing angles of the LG IPS panel. This is important if you have a coworker sitting next to you as you both look at the monitor from side angles, which would be better viewing on the LG IPS.
