I was 100%, expecting death stories. Maybe it's because I have a dark mind. I mean, I'm the kind of person who can't even look at a ditch without thinking "what if there's a dead body there." I see a pile of rocks and think" I wonder if someone is buried in those" so 🤷‍♀️

I once got pulled out of a school sponsored trip to Washington DC back in middle school so my parents could take a family vacation with me and my two brothers to Florida. I was kinda bummed at first because I was a huge history buff at the time, but as I learned from the people who went, several kids got sick but still had to walk with everyone and they usually ended up puking from the long hours of nonstop walking, countless others got nosebleeds, and everyone got maybe 5 or 6-ish hours of sleep at most every night. You can imagine the shock that my slightly tanned ginger-ass 14 year old self had when everyone looked like they just came crawling out of their caskets. To this day I'm still glad I never went through that dumpster fire of a school trip and that my awkward teenage self actually enjoyed myself on a vacation for the first time in a long while.

It was the Sunday before the main event happened, me and my dad were planning to get tickets to a festival downtown. (My town is more of a larger city, but still not at large as New York or LA.) Unfortunately, news broke out to us that my grandfather dies and his funeral would be the following Sunday. Long story short, we go to the funeral and come home, too tired to go to the festival and decide to sleep in. Needless to say My dead grandfather saved me from possibly becoming one of the 58 killed or over 500 injured in the October 1 massacre in Las Vegas.

When I rotated back home from my second deployment, while doing demobilization out processing at Fort Hood, the Army Doctor examining my physical health noticed I had an upper respiratory infection. He told me he would recommend I be temporarily assigned to the WTU and report to the SRP building every day until my lungs cleared up, which he estimated would take roughly a month. I was two weeks shy of 21 and my unit was set to take block leave. Between two deployments I had spent 27 months in Iraq and was ungodly homesick, so I wasn't keen on the idea of waiting around for 30 more days in temporary housing. After 2 days of essentially pleading with higher ups to let me go on block leave and report back after for an examination, they finally agreed and cleared me...
8 days later an Army Major walked into the same building brandishing duel hand guns and proceed to dump round after round into the group of soldiers waiting in the SRP hallway - the EXACT place I would have been standing if I hadn't persuaded Medical to let me go home.

Then a highly modified P-51 mustang crashed into the bleachers and killing 11 people (pilot included), and injuring 69 in the crowd. The kicker is it crashed right where we would have been sat in the "luxury seating". I don't think about it much but this video made me remember it. Idk how to explain it but for an unlucky person (in general) I have pretty good luck when it comes to not dying/being severely injured.

    Hillsborough.
In 1989 Liverpool football club were due to play a game in Sheffield. I'm a native of Liverpool, and at the time I was a student in Sheffield. I had no ticket, so I had the thought that I might go down and try to buy one outside the ground.
But a bunch of friends decided to go to an amusement park that day (Alton Towers), and I decided to go with them instead.
I got home late that night and found that a huge crowd of ticketless people had gathered outside the ground. The cops opened a big gate and let them pour into the ground, into a stand that was, as many were at the time, surrounded by concrete walls and steel fences. A massive crush developed and 94 people died. If I hadn't just decided to go with my friends that day, I'd have been in that crowd.
Worst part was I'd told my parents I might go to the match, but not that I'd changed my plans. This was pre-cellphone days, so whilst I had fun at the amusement park they got to spend the day trying to find out whether I was dead or not.

back in 2009 we were celebrating queen’s day (the netherlands) with my entire family. the royal family picked a city to visit for the day (as they do every year) and they picked mine that year so the parties and parades were bigger than usual. so we wanted to go see the royal family near the royal palace in my city, watch it from the intersection because it was the easiest to reach around there. my little sister had to pee though so we went to my grandparents’ apartment in the city’s centre and as we were waiting we watched the national broadcast of the queen’s parade. as me and my parents and uncles/aunts were watching, someone drove their car into the crowd at full speed in an attempt to kill the royal family. 8 people didn’t survive (including the driver) and dozens of people were injured. bodies literally flew all over the street, it was all visible on the live broadcast.
outside all parades froze, people on the street started getting updates and they freaked out. had it not been for my sister’s tiny bladder, I probably would’ve been either dead or severely traumatized now.
every once in a while youtube recommends me a video of the attack though and it brings back all the horrible memories and it really really sucks hdhs but yeah if you want more information you can look up 2009 apeldoorn queen’s day and it will give you all the info and even videos

Kinda similar to the mud run story, I once did a similar Tough Mudder thing when it was near where I lived. Did it with friends so I figured even if I didn't win it'd be fun. Well we're the first heat and each heat has each person in their own lane. I'm not the worlds smallest man, so eventually I get to a part where wires hang down to give you little shocks as you run through them. As I get there, another friend has just gotten through. I stop because something about the wires feels different than the ones in the other lanes. My friend says it's not bad and not to worry. I worry, and call over an official. I say somethings wrong with the wires. The official brushes his hand on a wire and is thrown back like five feet. Yeah, they didn't check the voltage running through each lane; there was enough power in those lines to contract my muscles into psuedo-paralysis, let alone death.

I actually have a story for this one. Not a life or death situation though.
8th grade class field trip. You were given the option to go to Cedar Point for the day or a local outdoor amusement park for the day. I took the latter option. Well those who went to Cedar Point had a worse experience than I had. The buses for the Cedar Point trip ended up going taking the wrong exit. After realizing their mistake, the buses arrived at Cedar Point much later than scheduled and, from what I heard, most people were only able to ride like 2 rides than ending up having to get back on the bus to go home. Needless to say, I had a much better time for a cheaper field trip.

It was more of a janitor job than anything else, hosing down equipment and mopping floors. I quit that day, and started at another job I had applied for.
About a month later, the company I quit from closed. This was on the local news. All of the employees were called one by one into the office, fired, and escorted out of the building without being allowed to talk to any of their former co-workers. They not only got no severance pay, but none of their sick/vacation pay owed them. They didn't even get their last paycheck, the company went bankrupt. I'm told there was some problem with their unemployment pay.

when my mom was young and hitch hiking across Canada. she was with a friend and a couple. the couple were going to Washington, mom and her friend decided to go to Vancouver. When they got to Vancouver they saw a news paper headline about the couple being found dead on the side of the highway in Washington. Both shot execution style, back of the head. The killer still hasn't been found, and probably never will after all these years.

Not me, but my Grandpa. When he was in high school, around age 15, he and his friend were walking back to his house, as he lived pretty close to the school. On the way back, two guys (that my Grandpa knew weren't the right crowd) asked if they wanted to go hang out. My Grandpa, knowing this, says he has to go home and tries to convince his friend to go with him. His friend went with the not-so-good guys instead, and ended up "borrowing" (stealing) his dad's car, getting drunk, and crashing the car. The former friend eventually died at like 30 something to smoking and the other 'bad guys' both either got sent to jail or died young, I can't remember.
This took me longer than I thought wow.

Not so much 'opting out' as just plain great timing. I joined the army in April of '03, but due to a severe case of the lazies in my senior year of high school, I ended up having to attend summer school in order to get my diploma. They set my schedule for training back far enough that I didn't make the cutoff for a Kuwait deployment. A deployment that was supposed to be only 12 months ended up being 22 months, and they didn't get back into country until the day before I left on my much easier deployment to Kosovo.

Galf506: I didn't build up anything. I told a simple little tale about how my training schedule kept me out of a deployment that kept 60% of my battalion away from their families for 10 months longer than originally scheduled. He's the one that needed to get all 'small-dick syndrome' and try to one-up me without actually sharing any details. Nevermind that half of the guys that *did* get stuck on that deployment had just returned from Iraq before being rotated back out almost immediately. That's almost three years away from their families in ostensibly harsher conditions than the average person has to deal with.

11th and 12th grade at my school.
See, before my school only offered classes up to 10th grade, but this was the first year they offered 11th and 12th grade through the IB Curriculum Program, which would mean we'd basically be the "Test" Class.
Additionally, we also had a mass exodus of teachers (I think 8 or so teachers went due to personal reasons) which meant our Headmaster had to hire 8 new teachers over summerbreak and get them to run through a further education course lasting all summer in order for them to get a certificate allowing them to teach in the IB.
And here comes the best. The Headmaster would change after summer break, so our current Headmaster was already kinda half-assing everything.
In the end, we ended up with 8 barely qualified teachers (some of them even refused to teach according to the IB curriculum, following their own curriculum because: "I've experience, bruh")
In the end, it all ended in failure. Not a single one of the students passed the final exams, the school wasn't allowed to teach the IB anymore, and to top it off, 1 year later, the school got closed forcefully by the country's ruler due to the new Headmaster directly violating a law and getting caught during an unannounced inspection ...
It all sounded like it's gonna fail from the get go to me, and instead of wasting my time with it, I just went of school and into University.

Back in the late 80’s or early 90’s, my Dad was laid off from his job. After a few months on unemployment he was going to get a job at an Army base as a civilian contractor. A few days before he was supposed to start, his old job called and told him that he could come back to work that next Monday if he wanted, so he did. A few months later , the people who he was going to work with at the Army base were doing something with some sort of artillery (don’t remember the exact details) when it somehow exploded prematurely. Everyone around was either killed or permanently deafened.

In 1968 my father's enlistment in the Air Force was ending. His boss was so impressed with his work that he offered my dad anything he wanted if he would re-enlist. My dad asked to join a special unit (sort of the elite level for his job). This happened just before my dad went on leave.
When he got back his boss had his orders ready. All he had to do was sign. But while he was on leave he'd been offered an extremely good job near a town where he wanted to raise his family, and he was getting married.
In the end, though he was strongly tempted, he decided not to re-enlist. He got out, accepted the good job, got married and started his civilian life.
The unit he almost joined was deployed to Vietnam and though they were not a combat unit (they were engineering) the unit was ambushed and totally wiped out.

I’ve been to five different schools, each time when things start to go to shit, I leave and find a new school, never stayed in one for more than two and a half years. My first school had a change in head teacher after I left and it basically crippled the school. My second school got shut down 3 weeks after I left. My third school became horribly overpopulated and underfunded to the point where they were running out of chairs and ended up having multiple teachers go to jail. My fourth school ran out of money and pulled all its subjects.
I wonder what’s gonna happen with my 5th school.

I used to swim competitively, and managed to qualify to compete on a provincial level. For that gala, I had to travel to a different province. The coordinators for my province wanted all the kids from our province to travel in one bus and all stay in dormitories without our parents (bearing in mind I was about 11/12 at this time). My parents and a couple of others were like “Hell no,” and took us separately. The kids that went as a huge ass group weren’t fed properly, got no more than 4 hours sleep because of how things were organized (let’s keep in mind the fact that we’re talking about athletes), and many of the young girls were being creeped on by boys in the shower (and nothing was done about it). It had been forecasted to rain, and it sure as hell did, and these kids were stuck with no cover, everything covered in mud. Glad I noped outta that one.
