Seems to work best with foliage behind your subject - what a superb effect, a great find, and well adapted. I've come close to something as weird by shooting through the bottom of a whisky glass - but only after consuming its contents ;-)
Here: th-cam.com/video/vyjzCypKH7Q/w-d-xo.html you have a movie of my production. As a projector lens focusing adapter, you can use a Helios 44-x drawn lens and aperture. This is how I adopted the LOMO 16KP 50mm F1.2 lens - also from the projector. I am sorry that I do not have a movie in English but maybe you will understand something visually.
You need tkonw the working distance frrom the lens end to focal plane, depending of that you chouse focusing helicoid (most ussually 17-31mm), which you will use for focusing + 2 or more addapters - one for attaching lens to helicoid, other for attaching helicoid to camera. depending on lens diamater, there are differend diameter helicoids - M42, M52, M65. for light lenses you can use cheap helicoids found on ebay, alyexpress, for heavy ones, hq helicoids with brass inner core. adapters are usually hard to find, either maka/adapt yourself,or buy hq ones @rafcamera + not all such lenses can be added to DSLR, becouse of short flange focal distance or made for 16mm film projectors, which will not cover the fullframe sensor something like that in short
I was trying to find it on ebay, and I didn't find the exact same lens, but what I can tell you is that one of these benoist berthiots, which is in very good shape, goes for almost a 1000 american dollars. Most of them, are around 250. Still what you got is a steal, I mean two euros!!!! Looks beautiful.
That is so cool. I am not even a big photography buff but I love the experimentation in this channel. I have been doing similar experiments but in order to find cheap odd sources for telescope eyepieces, and I have used lenses from things like data projectors, laser printers, and CD drives. I have also found that some old scanners come with camera lenses in them, as they have a small line sensor a couple inches long instead of as wide as a sheet of paper as most do today. These lens assemblies can be surprisingly large, the largest I found being an inch in diametre and one and a quarter long. The large ones have too long focus for a telescope eyepiece, but will probably work on a camera, which I have never tried.
I stumbled upon this video not knowing I'd end up feeling this way. It's like I was there with you. Crazy, at first I thought it was distracting but the more you look, the more it's like a dream. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Also see "vintageglas" on eBay: He's a German who 3D prints LTM39 (rangefinder) and M42 (SLR) adapters for many old leaf shutter camera lenses. He is very careful to maintain proper flange focal distances on his rangefinder and SLR products. I have several of them and they are fine pieces of work - shipped with 3D printed shades and caps. As a bonus, "vintageglas" lenses have diaphragms and (typically) front cell focusing, so they are not as limiting in use as are adapted projection lenses.
That is a very, very beautiful effect. Congratulations for seeing its potential. Someone should use that as a concept for an effects lens and market it. Certainly beats Lens Babies.
Actually you're half wrong. Pretty soon AI will be able to deliver this effect. But you're also half right: this is art and it was amazing to watch the clip :)
Yesterday I bought a Benoist Berthiot 50mm 1.5 Cinestar N1 in my local thrift shop for 5 euro. It seems to just cover apsc. Now testing it with a macro tube and some tape on an old Nex3.
So far the result is I'm gonna need to make a better adapter, it's nothing like the 2.8 85/90mm projector lenses I converted this way earlier. It's very difficult to focus and tilts too easily. Since it just barely covers the sensor, the tilting makes the corners go black. I'm thinking it needs a tube that fits more snugly, maybe with some cloth padding to create some friction to keep it in place.
Question : I got an 50mm projection lens it works from on my apsc sensor but not on full frame , full frame don't cover the corner so can you tell me how you pix that
Hi Matt, I have always loved your videos where you adapt the most peculiar lenses to modern digital cameras. I have been very interested in the focusing adapter you use for some time so thank you for telling us the name of it in this video. Was just curious if you had any recommendations for which of the helicoid adapters you would call the most adaptable, as i notice they come in M52 to M42 as well as M42 to M42. Thanks again for a great video.
Mathieu Stern ah good, that is the one i was considering, brill. Would you also say the longer the extension range the better? E.g. 35-90mm. Thanks for the speedy reply mate :)
Hey! I've got a Friend who managed to find one of these lenses! Can I get the STL to print the adaptor for him? I couldn't find a link in the comments or description. Thanks!
I was wondering if I was able to find one of these lenses if you would be willing to help me 3d print the foucus ring adapter? I really love the look of this lens. You did a great job with capturing the essence of this lens.
Hey Mathieu, your content is very good and bloody helpful for the hobbyist photographer I am. Je suis en Finistère en ce moment et tes images sont très magnifiques. Keep up the good content 😊
For a few shots, I had a combination of the feeling of eye strain and a hint of nausea. It really is "dreamy" but slightly unpleasant in some cases. I did recover enough to enjoy the shots of crepe-making, thankfully!
Try the elgeet cine navitar 2 inch f1.5(50mm f1.5)! If you can get your hands on it. It's a very rare c-mount lens and very sharp with crazy bokeh! Toby Marshall has a gallery on the lens.
Hello, Amazing videos. your channel is so different and full of creativity. Do you by any chance know of a sharp vintage 24mm lens that can be adapted to a Sony A7Riii with an autofocus adaptor? Thank you

Cinestar 75MM: “No.”

This lens produces some insane footage. Another wesome video!
Ooo jeez rick
It's so absurdly dream-like. From shot one my hair was on end. Great choice of music and editing (as usual).
Worth it just to see how crepes are made. Seriously, the swirly bokeh in the tree lined path was fantastic. Thanks for the video!
yea Crepes making is always fascinating

Holy shit, you italicized an emoji. This is revolutionary

So glad you popped into my recommended two weeks ago. 📷
How are you doing these self made adapters? Aww man this is so creamy oof!
Would love a video on how to adapt these
I'm very interested too. Maybe you could do a video about that? I would love to put some old lenses on my 5D. Thank you :)

Something so nostalgic, almost melancholic about this look. It looks more like what the human eye actually sees, perhaps?
You need your eyes checked
Yeah, sure kid Your brain filters out what real vision looks like, such as your nose you can now see in your vision.
I don't think there's a phone camera that could do this effect flawlessly with motion yet, this is really well done. :D
true, or maybe a broken phone :))
Well no need to even replicate it thought software
It just matter of optical design
Beautiful Work Mathieu!
Wow! What an incredible mesh of distortion, blur and sharpness. Such a beautiful effect well done!
You always have me watching in awe. I would love to make this lens
Ok... Shut up and take my money!! I want it!!! You did a great job
The effect you've got from that lens is so good it looks like it's filmed with CGI for the background
Wow, what a surreal, dreamy look. Incredible!
What camera do you have the lens mounted to around the 00:38 point?
It looks like a version of the A7, but it also doesn't.
That's been in my head, just as you written

what a magical feeling this lens gives off, i'd love to see more footage from it!
It's so melancholic and dreamy at the same time that it makes me wanna make something like this😢
This looks dreamy! Beautiful and unique
The look this gives really feels like I'm looking back in time. Amazing Video!
back in time a week ago for me :))
Wow Mathieu, Magical look and magical island scenes. Thanks again!
Your photography is very engaging. Loved this.
Wow. It's like this lens has human soul. Nostalgic and melancholic.
New sub here. This is stunning ❤️❤️
Really nice effect. It gives the image such depth!
Great lens mathieu and I enjoy every new video that you put out keep them coming 😊👍🏻
Good video, dreamy lens, beautiful island - I believe it's called Ushant in English. Would love to visit.
first few shots are intriguing and meditative!

Such a talent. Enjoyed both the lens and even more - how you make a use out of it!
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch 🥰 amazing job on the adaptor!

No filter or editing can reach this level. This is art

Moi je suis resté bloqué sur la bague de focus dont je connaissais pas l'existence. Ça a l'air génial ce truc pour la macro !
It's just amazing and really drawing, because it creates this hypnotic effect and I really couldn't take my eyes off the video.
2:59 the crepe-maker really tingle my OCD for not doing it in one run
You are amazing creativity!
I'm curious what is at 2:59? Galette au sarrasin?
a mix of sarrasin and crepe batter
Purest poetry.. Chapeau bas Mathieu.
Great images - another Petzval design lens I guess. Very well done!
i love the 3dimensionality that bokeh effect gives those images
Very awesome Effect, especially the narrow Trail in the Forrest, is like entering a Magic World, great Idea. 👍🏻
How did you manage to have a correct exposure in exterior? Did you used some nd filters?
Do I need particular lenses for the swirling effect or can I use any old projector lens?
