Geez, people can be harsh. Someone wrote: "If you have to study to get in, you probably don't belong there." Don't think like this. if you need to study, then study. Not everyone is equally naturally academically talented, but everyone can be hard-working. It is hard work that will get you through the admissions test and through school. Just as long as you know the structure of the test and do some practice, you should be fine.
If you study for years or months and get in, that's great. it probably means you're always on task and will most likely excel in school. if you study for a few days or weeks (or even for no time at all) and get in, that's also great. It doesn't matter how long you study for. if you get in, you get in; that's a great achievement despite what other people may think or say.
Good luck to those who already took the test and/or are taking the test in the future!

I completely agree. Natural talent is great, but it can only get you so far in life. I am currently a sophomore at Brooklyn Tech (Gateway to Medicine Major) and while there are a bunch of geniuses, the top students are up there because of their incredible work ethic and organizational skills. Good luck to all those taking the test!

Ashely Chong But what if we tried and tried and no matter how much effort was put in, you can’t get in? I mean, I spent more than a year on prepping for the SHSAT and didn’t get a offer for a single specialized high school. It made me discriminate those who attended specialized high schools because I feel such envious emotions towards them. I’m well aware this is a awful way of viewing life, but I can’t stop these feelings. I still hold these feelings several years after starting high school so in the end, I can’t accept the fact that specialized high schools even exist. Why bother having schools that are considered superior than others when it just makes the students that attend regular public high schools, feel stupid?

I have heard a lot of controversy regarding the change of the SHSAT .As a student attending one of New York's specialized High School's next year, I believe that eliminating the use of the SHSAT is not an effective method to diversify Specialized High Schools. Using new methods such as comparing test scores and a student's academics are too subjective. How can you say that one person's abilities are better than another student's? Also, the use of the test helps eliminate this issue. A test is NOT subjective and it can determine who really has a strive and motivation to attend these schools. Of course, many students in New York don't have access to the education support that others may have. In my opinion. I believe that Mayor de Blasio shoud create more programs that will help students learn the skills that they need in order to achieve their goals and to thrive in specialized high schools. As a state, we shouldn't lower the expectation bar for Specialized High Schools. We should instead provide more resources to students living in areas where resources are not available. Not only would this be an effective solution, but it would also be fair for ALL the STUDENTS that have tried tremendously hard to prepare for the SHSAT. On behalf of all my fellow Specialized High School students and of all students in New York, please DON'T GET RID OF THE SHSAT.

I was graduated in 1950 from an elite HS in NYC, Brooklyn Tech. I knew
little about Brooklyn Tech when I was admitted four years earlier. All I
knew was the reputation that it was a much better school than my home
district HS. When I went on to Brooklyn College, an elite, scholarship
college with an entrance examination, I learned that the prison-like
environment and rigidity of Brooklyn Tech was not a good preparation for
college or for life. Later, in graduate school where I earned a PhD in
physics, I met colleagues from Brooklyn, my home town, who had gone to
their district high schools. They also earned PhDs in physics. They had
not been held back by their district high schools and experienced a far
more normal life than I had behind the concrete walls of Brooklyn Tech
to which I had to ride the subways twice a day for four years.
I don't know if it has changed much in the decades since my attendance. I hope it has.
I don't know if its students still are ruled by an authoritarian, one like Joseph
Fanning, who admonishes with a Catholic Bible as Fanning did me, a Jew. My
experience tells me that students who are motivated and bright do not
need Brooklyn Tech or Stuyvesant or any other elite HS. It is just the
converse. The elite schools need them!

I’m gonna be completely honest and say that specialized high schools are a bit of a messed up system. Now, I have no right to say any of this considering I’m not in a Specialized high school, but based off my experience of taking the SHSAT and those who go to specialized high schools, I can say it’s ruining a few students’ high school life. Certain students that believed they can’t get into a specialized high school start to think they’re stupid or depressed because they worked so hard to get into a specialized high school only not to get in. This makes them feel like they’re in the wrong school once they enter the school they submit through their application. Specialized high schools are considered schools for gifted people. If they don’t get in, they’re not gifted or special. That’s the mindset that is crammed into every students’ head in NYC. Some students also stop hanging out with their friends because they feel a sense of distance between them and their friends since they got into a specialized high school. They feel, “I don’t have the right to be with them and drag them down because they’re special. They’re working hard in a gifted school and I should not hang out with them any longer.” I think that if specialized high schools were not seen as this unreachable “heaven” for all to competitively reach, then it won’t have to divide them from others. That’s what I think anyways.

Attention, if you are taking the 9th grade SHSAT, do not study for 1 month only, if you study for about 3 months you can get in. I say, if you get a 440 on the 8th grade test, you can get a 540 on the next and possibly get into Bronx Science of Tech. I plan on retaking the 9th grade shsat as I only got a 460, but I did not study at all and guessed for 30 questions. So if you failed only because you didn't prepare but still got close like me, then DEFINITELY study for the 9th grade SHSAT because there is incredible potential (a person got a 653 on the 9th grade test as they only got a 540 on the 8th grade).

You cannot simply get into the specialized high school in New York City.
The SHSAT is not like any other state exam.
The test is designed to select the "crème de la crème," so do not be disheartened if you cannot make it. The Ivy League is still four years away and if you believe in you, you could still make it. Good Luck.

correct my friend. however, those stats change each year due to:
    a) the total number of students taking the test
    b) the total high score on the test.
I say visit schools & find the teachers in a discipline that can feed your passion. Some teachers in some non-specialized high schools are doing amazing work!

Last year over 23,000 kids took the SHSAT & over 1,000 students had a perfect score. The majority of them chose Stuy, so the automatic cut off for Stuyvesant became 600 pts. For Bronx Science & Brooklyn Tech it was 590 respectively. That was before the cheating scandlal in June. There are 3 well known organizations that won't even include Stuyvesant in the ranking this year due to the 125 students who were caught cheating.

  • @DaveWard-xc7vd
    @DaveWard-xc7vd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I follow the controversy over the entrance exam for these schools, but only yesterday became aware of a problem with the selection process. Specifically the way school preference is used to bump the most gifted students.
This is not a merit based selection system. It is a mixed selection system and it is covertly racist.
    Hear me out.
Each school only has a finite number of seats. By eliminating students from the running by ranking them by their school preference you enroll lower scoring students and exclude higher scoring students.
Lets say there are two schools left out of four and there are three students.
    School 1 full
    School 2 full
    School 3 one seat
    School 4 one seat
    Student A has a score of 750
    School preference
    1,2,3,4
    Student B has a score of 700
    School preference
    3,4,2,1
    Student C has a score of 650
    School preference
    4,3,2,1
Even though student A has the highest score out of the three students the other two students each have a first choice advantage and will get into a school but student A - the highest scoring student - will not get into a school.
What if the highest scoring student happens to be Asian, the next white and the next black?
If the system were truely merit based the black - lowest scoring student - wouldnt get into a school.
The way the process should work is that all of the students should be ranked by their score and then assigned to a school based upon their preference.
If a students first choice school fills up before they get in then that student should get their second choice school, not loose it to a lower scoring student based upon that students school preferences.
This is an attempt to change the demographics of those schools. It is a highly covert form of racism due to the fact that Asian students overwhelmingly score higher than other races on the test and by using school preference to bump a high scoring Asian student out of the running, you allow a lower scoring student into the running and here is the covert racism - that student may not be Asian.
WAKE UP SMART KIDS! YOU ARE BEING PLAYED.
    It gets even worse.
If one of the four schools isnt as popular as the other three - perhaps its the furthest away - then it may be a second, third, fourth choice for most students which would allow really low scoring students to make it their first choice and nearly guarantee that they will get in.
Imagine one elite school that is comprised of nearly all low scoring students while hundreds of students that scored well above them dont get into any of the schools simply due to their school preferences.
    Criminal!

  • @MyMPPM
    @MyMPPM 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

When you say: "that's life" do you believe you can't get an 'A'?
Do you want As & Bs?
If you attend school with little absence, we could show you critical techniques to enable you to get 'B's and above, regardless of your disabilities.
Most high achievers find it difficult to sit through something that fails to challenge them, or they find boring. You just need to find a trigger or motivator.
For most w/ ADHD who hate to read, starting with comics then autobiographies works well.

At the very beginning of that sentence I used the word "maybe" which, again, signals speculation.
