    People that got to see Alan onstage with DM during the Music for the Masses Tour, World Violation Tour, and/or Devotional Tours were extremely lucky! That was DM at their finest.

    He was by far the most talented and certainly the hottest but the most down played. He deserved much more and he knew it and he left…and I haven’t seen a Depeche Mode show since. And that was the most engaging interview with Alan I’ve ever seen when he was in Depeche. I’m not down playing Martins songwriting which is beautiful but the musicianship award goes to Alan Wilder. No doubt.

    Alan was so talented, articulate and handsome yet seemed to be completely overlooked and underappreciated. I miss him so much, both as part of DM and in general, and envy anyone who got to see the band during those years. (It doesn't help that we have to make do with bootlegs of classic tours like Black Celebration and the WVT while every tour from the 21st century is captured for posterity.)😞

    Martin is a very good songwriter and Dave has the voice and the looks to be the front-man but clearly the key element of Depeche Mode was Alan Wilder. He elevated the band to reach its full potential around 1993. The band was never the same and never will be after Alan left.

    This is what I called smart, clever non-main stream interview. This is what I called Depeche Mode in it's essence. AW = DM. Sound. Vision. Idea. Intelligence.

    • @jakubpetricek
      @jakubpetricek 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I wouldn´t say that AW = DM. First you need songs and Alan´s just not as good at writing songs as Martin Gore even though he´s musically trained. Then you need a voice. And without Dave you can´t have a Depeche record. And then you need someone who knows his way around the studio, someone who make it sound like DM. And that was Alan´s job. Finally, you need someone who never developed his musical skills, but he claps hands and pretends to sing backing vocals while his mic isn´t plugged. That´s Fletch. It´s true he was involved in management, accountacy etc. But for more than 20 years now Depeche Mode have a full-time manager, Mr. Jonathan Kessler.

    • @Rene1Luv
      @Rene1Luv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      jakubpetricek true....I never saw a purpose for Andy Fletcher because he just doesn't do much musically other than stand behind the keyboard and sway and clap. Though him and Martin are best friends Martin once said in an interview many moons ago that he would find something for Fletcher to do in Depeche Mode

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Rene1Luv Fletch played a critical role in getting Martin to join the band. Vince, who started it all, wanted Martin in the band, but didn't know him at the time, while Fletch has been Martin's best friend since childhood. Without Martin, there would be no Depeche Mode, and without Fletch, Vince might not have been able to get Martin, who was in a rival band, to join. Martin, in hindsight, probably feels that he owes Fletch for bringing him into the right band, and of course they are best friends, so Fletch isn't going anywhere.
      Dave and Alan just had to accept this because without Fletch and his connection to Martin, almost certainly neither of them would have ever tasted real success in the music business. And they all owed Vince, but he left of his own accord, so I guess they don't. :)
      As for Fletch's role, I suppose even with Jonathan Kessler as their manager, there are still many decisions Fletch has to make on behalf of the band. They all vote on the big stuff, but aren't interested in the details, which they leave to Fletch.

      Dave was the only one who ever said things like "you're doing a great job" to Alan. Martin treated him like shit and that's the reason he left. and you can watch live from South Africa in 1994, Martin is so high and drunk that he can hardly stand up when he tries to sing A question of lust. you can clearly see in Alan's face that he's thinking "I've had enough of this". Alan's single version of IYR took him 4 weeks to make and then Martin told him that the single remix was already done by someone else. so that's how Martin treated Alan.

    • @junebaby166
      @junebaby166 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is extremely sad indeed that Alan Wilder left Depeche Mode and there was much speculation over why.
      Most of you will be familiar with his statement and have probably read and/or heard various analyses of his reasons and motives or seen videos on the topic (me included). However, I don't find it helpful putting the blame on the other band members. It was Alan's decision to leave the group and he did what was best for him. He could have dished out the dirt and blamed the other three yet he chose not to and that really shows his greatness of character.
      In the documentary "We were going to live together and it was going to be wonderful" (making of SOFAD) he talks about why he left. It is really worth watching albeit very sad. No mention of Dave's drug addiction or Martin treating him like shit. One has to give him credit for that. This sort of finger-pointing is just not his style and I don't think he would appreciate it. As he put it in his statement: "I do not wish to cast aspersions on any individual, suffice to say that relations have become seriously strained ... and in certain situations intolerable. "

  • @cjp592

    Alan Wilder is gorge. He does it for me in every way. And I discovered them when I was 10 in 2000. I was surprised they were already older then. I was sheltered growing up listening to mainly classical, jazz, musicals or soundtracks because that was allowed.
    I much prefer him with his natural hair color which is lighter with natural blonde highlights. I much prefer the cleaner look. When men weren’t covered with horrendous tattoos and dressed like an asshole.
    Love the brow arch. ❤

      He's not doing an awful lot these days, sadly. Recoil aren't my favorite, but his music is definitely striking and excellent. He seems to have had to sell off a *lot* of stuff to keep afloat over the last ten years. I saw a video from early 90s where he was buying what looked like an 1800's dentist chair just because he thought it looked cool: he is not in that position any more, I'm sorry to say. Last thing I saw him do was play piano on/produce some single by some unknown young lady singer, which I found less than stellar, but it wasn't because of his playing. But that was maybe six years ago. It's a real shame. I greatly appreciate what Alan added to DM but I have loved their new albums just as much as when he was involved. I just wish Recoil were appreciated more widely (not to say his music has no fans at all) because he's very talented. The best success Recoil ever had was Bloodline, and sales have just dropped with each album. Really atmospheric stuff, very unsettling, with amazing sounds, but without much of a melodic side. My favorite song of his is probably 'Jezebel,' where he takes a whole, very old gospel song, and builds new music around it. It's a shocking, intense experience: which is fantastic, but not something I can listen to all the time, if that makes sense. It's just too emotionally draining. But when I feel I need to listen to it, I'm very grateful to have it.

      What he brought to the group became the problem for him as he was really the only one doing that after Martin's lyrics,
      He took the burden until the pressure was such he was the only one holding the music together,
      Such a shame but it was the band's fault not so much Alan's
      lack of motivation to carry the band.

    I love Alan, and I recognize the impact he had in Depeche Mode and that something was lost when he left, but you all saying he made a mistake leaving the band and whatnot gotta give him a break, it's unfortunate of course but he did what was best for him, and we gotta respect that. We should just look at and enjoy all the good times of him in the band instead of repeating "He made a mistake", "He should come back.", or "DM is nothing without Alan."
    And here comes an unpopular opinion I guess: Depeche Mode is something without Alan. They're not the same Depeche Mode; they've changed, but they're still Depeche Mode. Saying that they're nothing without Alan undermines all the hard work they've done all these years after he left, and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't appreciate that.
    If you don't like Depeche Mode the way they are now, no one forces you to listen to them, but I just think it's wrong to state that them changing is something bad, like it's a fact. All bands change in one way or another, whether they lose a member or not. Depeche Mode is still gaining fans after 40 years, I'm one of them, so that alone proves that they're still special, even without Alan.
    But to be clear again, I appreciate Alan and what he did so much, but I think people kinda need to move on. It's still possible to love and appreciate him (and miss him) without dwelling about the past and "what should've been", I'm pretty sure he's moved on as well as the rest of Depeche Mode.

Ofc I can understand that it must've been hard seeing Alan leave the band but... it's been 25 years and people have a choice if they wanna keep following DM or not. There's so much complaint directed towards them (and Alan as well sometimes) which they totally don't deserve in my opinion.

    • @junebaby166
      @junebaby166 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm so glad I came across your comment. I couldn't agree with you more. I was thinking something like that but I could not have put it in such beautiful words.
      It is selfish to say "Alan should not have left Depeche Mode" and people who say "They are nothing without him" disrespect their achievements of the last 27 years.
      He did what was best for him at the time and he is only accountable to himself. If anybody needs recap on what led him to leave the band I recommend watching the documentaries "We were going to live together and it was going to be wonderful" and "Oh well, that's the end of the band".
      It's undeniably sad that Alan left DM but it's a shame how this splits up the fan community and it doesn't help that fans blame the other band members (especially Martin and Andy) for it. Alan despite everything that may have happened (which only they know) never blamed any of the other three for his leaving.
      I could go on but you basically said it all. Thanks.

    • @Kyubone
      @Kyubone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@junebaby166 Aww thanks! Totally agree with you too, and good documentary recommendations. I'd just seen so many comments either blaming Alan, or blaming DM (mostly blaming the band) for any change they went through, blaming them for not being the "same" DM, and it got very, very tiresome to see so I just had to say something about it. I just don't understand these so called "fans" that have to drag the current DM when they can just enjoy the old DM whenever they want, and let everyone else that enjoy current DM enjoy it. When I was a new DM fan I didn't understand the negativity and the division of the fandom, and tbh I still don't today.

    Alan was a very smart guy, but leaving Depeche was a mistake. It was obvious that Alan is not replaceble with other people in the studio. I was a fan since 1989 and now I can say that DM lost its 80's and 90's attractiveness in all kind of ways, mostly as I think because of there dissension with Alan Wilder.

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I tend to think that Alan knew what he was doing. He had made enough money by then to be financially independent at a level that satisfied him, he couldn't envision himself being in a pop band all that much longer anyway, and being in Depeche Mode during the making of SOFAD and the Devotional Tour was just pure misery for him, given the working conditions. Some claim that Alan didn't think the band would be around for much longer anyway so he jumped off the sinking ship, but I dispute this because if that were the case, then there would have been no reason to resign. I mean, it's not literally like a sinking ship that would have killed him if he hadn't abandoned it. Alan just didn't want to be in Depeche Mode anymore.

      @@rbrtck Agreed. Alan had too much dignity to see himself in a pop band as an old man. You've got to respect that.

      They treated him like shit except for Dave, this guy was in the studio longer than anyone else and wasn’t getting any credit or appreciation. Andy fletcher who doesn’t do shit gets the same credit and pay for songs he had nothing to do with. Im glad he left he deserves better

    He left DM and the group lost its unique sound. Yes, they still make music, sell out arenas, but who is really there to hear “When the Body Speaks” or “Fragile Tension” vs. “Stripped, Behind the Wheel, World in My Eyes, or ETS?” The defense rests its case.

    depeche MODE was depeche MODE as long as they held the original line-up until Alan left the band, so then, they should have been called "DEMO MODE", and now that Andrew Fletcher has passed away, this band seems to have no future, David is only a singer and is not able to shake a tambourine, and Martin have to deal with an overload of creativity, by the way, Andrew Fletcher was not a consistent musical input for the band, he was just there because he was Martin's best friend since school days. When Alan was invited by Robert Smith to be part of "The Cure" he simply and kindly rejected the offer despite being good friends arguing "being in a band again is the last thing I wanted to do" Alan Wilder was depeche MODE's engine, Alan Wilder was depeche MODE.
